Species of Angiostrongylus (Nematoda: Metastrongyloidea) in wildlife: A review.

Twenty-one species of Angiostrongylus plus Angiostrongylus sp. (Nematoda: Metastrongyloidea) are known currently in wildlife. These occur naturally in rodents, tupaiids, mephitids, mustelids, procyonids, felids, and canids, and aberrantly in a range of avian, marsupial and eutherian hosts including humans. Adults inhabit the pulmonary arteries and right atrium, ventricle and vena cava, bronchioles of the lung or arteries of the caecum and mesentery. All species pass first-stage larvae in the faeces of the host and all utilise slugs and/or aquatic or terrestrial snails as intermediate hosts. Ga

The effect of Pneumostrongylus tenuis (Nematoda: Metastrongyloidea) on kids.

Kids, 6-28 weeks of age, infected with 200-1000 infective larvae of meningeal worm (Pneumostrongylus tenuis) of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), developed colitis and peritonitis. Bacteroides sp., Bacillus sp., Escherichia coli, Proteus sp. and Enterococcus sp. were found in the peritoneal cavity. Most kids were moribund or dead 4-11 days after infection and frequently the colon had ruptured. Only two kids (of 11) in which the disease was allowed to run its course survived colitis and peritonitis but these two animals developed severe neurologic signs 18 and 38 days after infection.

Oslerus osleri (metastrongyloidea; filaroididae) in gray wolves (Canis lupus) from Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada.

Oslerus osleri is a filaroid parasite of the respiratory tract of canids. In North America, it is most commonly reported from coyotes (Canis latrans) and domestic dogs (Canis lupus familiaris), but reports in gray wolves (Canis lupus) are infrequent. We report a new geographic record for O. osleri in four gray wolves from Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada. Adult nematodes found in nodules in the submucosa of the trachea and bronchi were identified as O. osleri based on morphometry of spicules of males. We sequenced two segments of the genome of adult nematodes: a 1,111-base pair (bp) segmen

Respiratory nematodiasis (Nematoda, Metastrongyloidea) is associated with marked type 2 inflammation in a marine mammal.

Type 2 inflammation, mediated by T-helper 2 (Th2) cells, promotes wound healing and clears large pathogens such as helminths. However, exacerbated type 2 inflammation can lead to tissue damage prompting a debate on the protective versus detrimental role of this response in an evolutionary context. Wild mammals with significant morbidity and mortality due to helminth infection offer a unique opportunity to understand the mechanisms and role of type 2 inflammation in a natural animal model. Here, we characterized leukocyte populations and cytokine production in the lung and lymph nodes of strand

Redescription and first molecular characterization of the little known feline neurotropic nematode Gurltia paralysans (Nematoda: Metastrongyloidea).

Gurltia paralysans is a poorly documented metastrongyloid nematode of cats, which mainly parasitizes the veins in the spinal cord subarachnoid space and parenchyma. Parasitic paraparesis caused by G. paralysans is a lesser-known spinal cord disease affecting domestic and wild felids of South America. Regions where feline gurltiosis is endemic include the southern parts of Chile and Argentina. Intra vitam diagnosis of feline gurltiosis remains challenging and is based primarily on neurological signs and the exclusion of other ethiologies for feline myelopathies. In view of the lack of informati

Prevalence and molecular identification of the sinus worm Skrjabingylus petrowi (Nematoda: Metastrongyloidea) from Martes spp. in Germany.

The nematodes of the genus Skrjabingylus (family Metastrongylidae) can parasitise the nasal and frontal sinus cavities of different carnivore species. Until recently, Skrjabingylus petrowi Bageanov & Petrov, 1941, has mainly been described in pine martens (Martes martes Linnaeus, 1758) and sables (Martes zibellina Linnaeus, 1758) sampled in the European part of the former Soviet Union. Newer finds in the stone marten (Martes foina Erxleben, 1777) and from different parts of Europe suggest, however, that the species might have a broader host-species range than previously assumed and be geograph

First Record of the Sinus Worm Skrjabingylus petrowi (Nematoda: Metastrongyloidea) in a Pine Marten Martes martes from Poland.

BACKGROUND: Skrjabingylus spp. are nematodes that parasitize in the frontal and nasal sinuses of small mustelids. In Europe, the two species S. nasicola and S. petrowi are known, although records of S. petrowi are extremely rare, except in the former part of the USSR. The aim of the present study was to screen pine martens (Martes martes) from Poland for the first time for the presence of S. petrowi. METHODS: Three road-killed pine martens were collected in 2018 and 2020 in the province Lower Silesian in southwestern Poland. A complete necropsy was performed on the fresh pine marten heads and

A new species of Skrjabingylus Petrov, 1927 (Nematoda: Metastrongyloidea) from the frontal sinuses of the hooded skunk, Mephitis macroura (Mustelidae).

Skrjabingylus santaceciliae n. sp. is described based on specimens from the frontal sinuses of a hooded skunk, Mephitis macroura, collected from the Area de Conservación Guanacaste, Costa Rica. Skrjabingylus santaceciliae n. sp. differs from the other 5 species in the genus in having pointed spicule tips that lack a rounded or lobed formation and by lacking a prominent distal projection at the tail tip. Morphometric comparisons show that S. santaceciliae n. sp. is much smaller than the only other valid species from Mephitis, Skrjabingylus chitwoodorum Hill, 1939. Likewise, morphometric compari

Co-introduction into a delicate island ecosystem: metastrongyloid nematodes (superfamily Metastrongyloidea) of veterinary and medical importance circulating in aquatic and terrestrial environments of Tenerife (Canary Islands).

Metastrongyloid nematodes typically reside as adults in the cardiopulmonary systems of their mammalian definitive hosts, potentially causing severe diseases. Of particular concern are Angiostrongylus cantonensis and A. costaricensis, which can cause eosinophilic meningitis and abdominal angiostrongyliasis, respectively, in their accidental human hosts. Several metastrongyloid species of medical and veterinary importance have been documented in the Canary Islands. However, the gastropod species acting as intermediate hosts for some of these nematodes in the archipelago remained unknown. This st

Detection of Aelurostrongylus spp. Infection in the Neozoan American Mink (Neogale vison) in Southern Chile.

BACKGROUND: The American mink (Neogale vison) is an invasive mustelid in Chile that serves as a natural reservoir host for several pathogens. Cardiorespiratory nematodes of the superfamily Metastrongyloidea, including Aelurostrongylus spp., have been reported in carnivores worldwide but remain poorly documented in South American wildlife and invasive species. This study reports the first detection of Aelurostrongylus spp. infection in American minks in Southern Chile. METHODS: Between 2024 and 2025, 27 American mink carcasses were collected from the Los Ríos and Los Lagos regions, Southern Ch

Crenosoma vulpis in red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) in Northern Italy.

Crenosoma vulpis, the fox lungworm, is a nematode parasite of wild and domestic canids belonging to the super-family Metastrongyloidea. A survey of infection was carried out examining 88 red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) obtained during the regular hunting season (2014-2015) from the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy. Carcasses were stored frozen (- 21 °C) prior to necropsy. Lungs were examined for the presence of adult worms by dissection of the trachea, bronchi, and bronchioles, and then the lung tissue was examined for first-stage larvae (L1) by the Baermann method. No adult stages were detected, but

The early migration of Elaphostrongylus rangiferi in goats.

The migration of nematodes of the genus Elaphostrongylus (Metastrongyloidea: Protostrongylidae) from the gut into the tissues of ruminants has not been described. Detailed histologic studies were performed on five goat kids that had received oral doses of 1,000-1,500 infective larvae of Elaphostrongylus rangiferi Mitskevich, 1960 and were subsequently autopsied at days 2, 4, 6, 10, and 14 post inoculation. The main migratory route of E. rangiferi larvae seemed to be haematogenous. The larvae penetrated the venules of the abomasum and followed the blood stream via the liver to the lungs. In the

Right Testicular Artery Occlusion and Acute Appendicitis by Angiostrongylus costaricensis.

Introduction. Angiostrongylus costaricensis is a nematode from the superfamily Metastrongyloidea, whose etymology is "roundworm that lives in blood vessels". This parasite can be found from the southern United States to northern Argentina and southern Brazil. In 1983, Morera and Ruiz published the first case of a testicular artery occlusion by A. costaricensis. Case Presentation. A five year old boy presented with eight days of pain, denying trauma backgrounds and followed with an increase of volume. The treatment was a right simply orchiectomy, finding necrosis of the testicle, the biopsy sho
