Experimental Investigation of the Formation of Formaldehyde by Hadean and Noachian Impacts.

Formaldehyde (FA) is an important precursor in the abiotic synthesis of major biomolecules including amino acids, sugars, and nucleobases. Thus, spontaneous formation of prebiotic FA must have been crucial for the chemical origin of life. The frequent impacts of meteorites and asteroids on Hadean Earth have been considered one of the abiotic synthetic processes of organic compounds. However, the impact-induced formation of FA from CO2 as the major atmospheric constituent has not been confirmed yet. This study investigated the formation of FA in impact-induced reactions among meteoritic mineral

Deuterium in comet C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp): detection of DCN.

Deuterated hydrogen cyanide (DCN) was detected in a comet, C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp), with the use of the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope on Mauna Kea, Hawaii. The inferred deuterium/hydrogen (D/H) ratio in hydrogen cyanide (HCN) is (D/H)HCN = (2.3 +/- 0.4) x 10(-3). This ratio is higher than the D/H ratio found in cometary water and supports the interstellar origin of cometary ices. The observed values of D/H in water and HCN imply a kinetic temperature >/=30 +/- 10 K in the fragment of interstellar cloud that formed the solar system.

Anharmonic analysis of the vibrational spectra of some cyanides and related molecules of astrophysical importance.

A detailed analysis of the vibrational spectra of carbonyl cyanide, diethynyl ketone and acetyl cyanide has been conducted in harmonic and anharmonic approximations. RHF, MP2 and density functional theory (DFT) methods with 6-311++G(2df,2p) basis sets and B3LYP functionals have been employed. Spectroscopic constants such as anharmonicity constants, rotational and centrifugal distortion constants, rotation-vibration coupling constants and Coriolis coupling coefficients have been calculated for each molecule and compared with the experimental data, where available. A close agreement between the

Parent volatiles in comet 9P/Tempel 1: before and after impact.

We quantified eight parent volatiles (H2O, C2H6, HCN, CO, CH3OH, H2CO, C2H2, and CH4) in the Jupiter-family comet Tempel 1 using high-dispersion infrared spectroscopy in the wavelength range 2.8 to 5.0 micrometers. The abundance ratio for ethane was significantly higher after impact, whereas those for methanol and hydrogen cyanide were unchanged. The abundance ratios in the ejecta are similar to those for most Oort cloud comets, but methanol and acetylene are lower in Tempel 1 by a factor of about 2. These results suggest that the volatile ices in Tempel 1 and in most Oort cloud comets origina

Chemical processing in the coma as the source of cometary HNC.

The discovery of hydrogen isocyanide (HNC) in comet Hyakutake with an abundance (relative to hydrogen cyanide, HCN) similar to that seen in dense interstellar clouds raised the possibility that these molecules might be surviving interstellar material. The preservation of material from the Sun's parent molecular cloud would provide important constraints on the processes that took place in the protostellar nebula. But another possibility is that HNC is produced by photochemical processes in the coma, which means that its abundance could not be used as a direct constraint on conditions in the ear

Meteorites as Food Source on Early Earth: Growth, Selection, and Inhibition of a Microbial Community on a Carbonaceous Chondrite.

Meteoritic material accumulated on the surface of the anoxic early Earth during the Late Heavy Bombardment around 4.0 Gya and may have provided Earth's surface with extraterrestrial nutrients and energy sources. This research investigates the growth of an anaerobic microbial community from pond sediment on native and pyrolyzed (heat-treated) carbonaceous chondrite Cold Bokkeveld. The community was grown anaerobically in liquid media. Native Cold Bokkeveld supported the growth of a phylogenetically clustered subset of the original pond community by habitat filtering. The anaerobic community on

Chiral discrimination of amino acids in meteorite and desert soil extracts via single-molecule nanogap conductance.

Life on Earth uses L-amino acids and D-sugars, whereas abiotic processes produce equal abundances of both enantiomers. Detecting enantiomeric excess among molecules of biological interest has therefore been proposed as a potential biosignature for life beyond Earth. However, robust electrical methods for determining the L/D ratios of amino acids and sugars at low concentrations, particularly in chemically complex samples, remain limited. Here we show that quantum tunneling currents electrically distinguish individual L- and D-amino acids and quantify their ratios at the single-molecule level w

Anomalous nitrogen isotope ratio in comets.

High-resolution spectra of the CN B2 summation operator +-X2 summation operator + (0,0) band at 390 nanometers yield isotopic ratios for comets C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp) and C/2000 WM1 (LINEAR) as follows: 165 +/- 40 and 115 +/- 20 for 12C/13C, 140 +/- 35 and 140 +/- 30 for 14N/15N. Our N isotopic measurements are lower than the terrestrial 14N/15N = 272 and the ratio for Hale-Bopp from measurements of HCN, the presumed parent species of CN. This isotopic anomaly suggests the existence of other parent(s) of CN, with an even lower N isotopic ratio. Organic compounds like those found in interplaneta

Sublimation from icy jets as a probe of the interstellar volatile content of comets.

Comets are some of the most primitive bodies left over from the Solar System's early history. They may preserve both interstellar material and material from the proto-solar nebula, and so studies of their volatile components can provide clues about the evolution of gases and ices, as a collapsing molecular cloud transforms into a mature planetary system. Previous observations of emission from rotational transitions in molecules have averaged over large areas of the inner coma, and therefore include both molecules that sublimed from the nucleus and those that result from subsequent chemical pro

Characteristics and formation of amino acids and hydroxy acids of the Murchison meteorite.

Eight characteristics of the unique suite of amino acids and hydroxy acids found in the Murchison meteorite can be recognized on the basis of detailed molecular and isotopic analyses. The marked structural correspondence between the alpha-amino acids and alpha-hydroxy acids and the high deuterium/hydrogen ratio argue persuasively for their formation by aqueous phase Strecker reactions in the meteorite parent body from presolar, i.e., interstellar, aldehydes, ketones, ammonia, and hydrogen cyanide. The characteristics of the meteoritic suite of amino acids and hydroxy acids are briefly enumerat

Detecting Fundamental Chiral Biosignatures in the Ultraviolet Polarization Spectrum.

Chiral molecules are ubiquitous and necessary for life as we know it. In extant life, the amino acid and sugar constituents of proteins and biopolymers consist of only one enantiomer. This "homochirality" is plausibly generic to any biochemical life and therefore may represent a pure, agnostic biosignature. The ultraviolet (UV) circular polarization spectrum offers a practical method for detecting chirality for generic biomass and hence can be a powerful tool for detecting such biosignatures in an extraterrestrial setting. Here, we demonstrate distinctive UV chiral signatures from astrobiology

New ultrasound-assisted microreactor for extracting extraterrestrial biomolecules.

Searching for organics in extraterrestrial environments, especially biomolecules, continues to be a notable challenge for in situ missions. To address this challenge, this paper introduces an ultrasound (US)-assisted reactor for extraction of amino acids, which complies with space constraints.. The optimal duration for in situ extraction was set at 10 min, using a mixture of water and methanol (1:1, v/v). Compared to 24 h hot water extraction, a 10-min US extraction at 2.4 MHz or 20 kHz enable 80 % of the amino acid recovery from the Mukundpura meteorite and 100 % recovery was achieved when US

Active methylotrophic methanogenesis by a microbial consortium enriched from a terrestrial meteorite impact crater.

Microbial methane generation (methanogenesis) is an important metabolic process in the terrestrial deep biosphere and is an analog to early Earth as it is proposed to be one of the most ancient metabolisms on Earth. Signs of methanogenesis in meteorite impact craters are of particular interest in this respect as these settings are proposed hot spots for deep microbial colonization of the upper crust. Yet, reports of active deep rock-hosted methanogenesis are scarce, particularly for methylotrophic methanogenesis, while reports from terrestrial meteorite impact craters are completely lacking. H

Production of Organic Precursors via Meteoritic Impacts and Its Implications for Prebiotic Inventory of Early Planetary Surfaces.

Meteoritic impacts on planetary surfaces deliver a significant amount of energy that can produce prebiotic organic compounds such as cyanides, which may be a key step to the formation of biomolecules. To study the chemical processes of impact-induced organic synthesis, we simulated the physicochemical processes of hypervelocity impacts (HVI) in experiments with both high-speed 13C60+ projectiles and laser ablation. In the first approach, a 13C60+ beam was accelerated to collide with ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3) to reproduce the shock process and plume generation of meteoritic impacts on nitrogen-

Photometric behavior of comet Hale-Bopp (C/1995 O1) before perihelion.

Narrowband photometric observations of comet Hale-Bopp (C/1995 O1) between 25 July 1995 and 15 February 1997 indicated gas and dust production rates of 20 and 100 times greater, respectively, than observed at the same heliocentric distances for comet P/Halley in 1985. Hale-Bopp produced dust at a rate greater than has been observed for any other comet at any distance since at least 1977. On the basis of the observed production rate of the hydroxyl molecule, the calculated minimum effective diameter of Hale-Bopp's nucleus is 17 kilometers, but the actual diameter of the nucleus is likely to be

Spectroscopic evidence for interstellar ices in comet Hyakutake.

Volatile compounds in comets are the most pristine materials surviving from the time of formation of the Solar System, and thus potentially provide information about conditions that prevailed in the primitive solar nebula. Moreover, comets may have supplied a substantial fraction of the volatiles on the terrestrial planets, perhaps including organic compounds that played a role in the origin of life on Earth. Here we report the detection of hydrogen isocyanide (HNC) in comet Hyakutake. The abundance of HNC relative to hydrogen cyanide (HCN) is very similar to that observed in quiescent interst

Experimental Models on the Prebiotic Formation of Biopolymer Building Blocks.

The scientific study of the origins of life is a deep pursuit that exists at the intersection of multiple disciplines. Prebiotic chemistry focuses on understanding how biopolymer building blocks such as amino acids, nucleotides, and sugars emerged and how their chemical and structural space evolves toward life (chemical evolution). Simulation experiments have been essential for exploring plausible pathways for the origin of building blocks under early Earth conditions and planetary environments. Key examples include the seminal Miller-Urey experiment and the polymerization of hydrogen cyanide.

Mechanism for the Coupled Photochemistry of Ammonia and Acetylene: Implications for Giant Planets, Comets and Interstellar Organic Synthesis.

Laboratory studies provide a fundamental understanding of photochemical processes in planetary atmospheres. Photochemical reactions taking place on giant planets like Jupiter and possibly comets and the interstellar medium are the subject of this research. Reaction pathways are proposed for the coupled photochemistry of NH3 (ammonia) and C2H2 (acetylene) within the context Jupiter's atmosphere. We then extend the discussion to the Great Red Spot, Extra-Solar Giant Planets, Comets and Interstellar Organic Synthesis. Reaction rates in the form of quantum yields were measured for the decompositio
