Comparative analysis of adhesin-like proteins from Methanobacteriales species.

Methanogenic archaea are key syntrophic partners in animal and human guts. However, the molecular basis of physical and functional interactions of methanogens with other cells remains poorly understood. Adhesin-like proteins (ALPs) are abundant, unusually large, and repeat-rich surface proteins and are potential prime candidates for mediating cell-cell interactions, however, due to poor characterization, ALPs often remain neglected in annotations of genomes and large-scale datasets. Here, we combined structure-guided analysis with comparative genomics to map ALP domain architectures across Met

Analyzing the causal relationship between gut microbiota, metabolites, and constipation: A Mendelian randomization study.

A growing body of evidence suggests that the gut microbiota (GM) and its metabolites may play a role in the development of constipation; however, further investigation is necessary to ascertain the precise relationship. Genetic instruments were derived from large-scale genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of European populations. Pooled summary statistics for GM (n = 18,340) and metabolites (n = 7824) were derived from public GWAS, while constipation data (n = 47,696) were obtained from the FinnGen database R10. Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses were performed using data from GWAS to det

Methanotrophy - Environmental, Industrial and Medical Applications.

Aerobic methanotrophs are an intriguing group of microbes with the singular ability to consume methane as their sole source of carbon and energy. As such, methanotrophs are receiving increased attention to control methane emissions to limit future climate change. Methanotrophs have a wide range of other applications, including pollutant remediation and methane valorization (e.g. conversion of methane to protein, bioplastics, and biodiesel amongst other products). Methanotrophs also produce a novel copper-binding compound, methanobactin, that has significant potential for the treatment of coppe

Metagenomic analysis reveals the effects of long-term antibiotic pressure on sludge anaerobic digestion and antimicrobial resistance risk.

Continuous stirred-tank digesters with tetracyclines and sulfonamides were operated to investigate the impacts of antibiotic pressure on sludge anaerobic digestion. The versatile methanogen Methanosarcinales and strictly hydrogenotrophic methanogen Methanobacteriales increased and decreased by 21.1% and 10.9% under antibiotic pressure, respectively. KEGG analysis revealed that hydrogenotrophic and acetoclastic methanogenesis pathways were all affected. The decrease in abundance of function genes involved in lipid metabolism, carbohydrate metabolism, and fatty acid degradation, would lead to a

Taxonomic revision of the genus Methanobrevibacter, description of Methanomonile shimae gen. nov. sp. nov., and proposal of Methanobrevibacteraceae fam. nov.

Recent phylogenomic analyses revealed that the genus Methanobrevibacter, which consists almost exclusively of representatives from the intestinal tract of animals, is severely underclassified. Based on the large relative evolutionary divergence between individual subclades, members of the genus Methanobrevibacter have been reclassified into eight novel genera as new combinations proposed under the rules of the Code of Nomenclature of Prokaryotes Described from Sequence Data. Here, we validly publish the new names for all taxa with type strains also under the rules of the International Code of

Exploring the gut microbiota's effect on temporomandibular joint disorder: a two-sample Mendelian randomization analysis.

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD) are highly prevalent among people. Numerous investigations have revealed the impact of gut microbiota in many diseases. However, the causal relationship between Temporomandibular joint disorders and gut microbiota remains unclear. METHODS: Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS) refer to the identification of sequence variations, namely single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), existing across the entire human genome. GWAS data were collected on gut microbiota and TMD. Then, instrumental variables were screened through F-values and removal of l

Role of colonic microbiota in colorectal carcinogenesis: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The human colonic mucosa is populated by a wide range of microorganisms, usually in a symbiotic relation with the host. Sometimes this balance is lost and a state of dysbiosis arises, exposing the colon to different metabolic and inflammatory stimuli (according to the microbiota's changing profile). Recent findings lead to hypothesize that this unbalance may create a subclinical pro-inflammatory state that increases DNA mutations and, therefore, colorectal carcinogenesis. In this article we aim to systematically review the scientific evidence regarding colonic microbiota an

[Microbiological and production characteristics of the high-temperature Kongdian bed revealed during field trial of biotechnology for the enhancement of oil recovery].

Microbiological technology for the enhancement of oil recovery based on the activation of the stratal microflora was tested in the high-temperature horizons of the Kongdian bed (60 degrees C) of the Dagang oil field (China). This biotechnology consists in the pumping of a water-air mixture and nitrogen and phosphorus mineral salts into the oil stratum through injection wells in order to stimulate the activity of the stratal microflora which produce oil-releasing metabolites. Monitoring of the physicochemical, microbiological, and production characteristics of the test site has revealed large c

[Microbiological investigations of high-temperature horizons of the Kongdian petroleum reservoir in connection with field trial of a biotechnology for enhancement of oil recovery].

The physicochemical conditions and microbiological characteristics of the formation waters of the Kongdian bed of the Dagang oil field (China) were studied. It was demonstrated that this bed is a high-temperature ecosystem with formation waters characterized by low mineralization. The concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus compounds, as well as of electron acceptors, are low. Oil and oil gas are the main organic matter sources. The bed is exploited with water-flooding. The oil stratum was inhabited mostly by anaerobic thermophilic microorganisms, including fermentative (10(2)-10(5) cells/ml
