Single cell protein production potential of enriched microbial populations from rice paddy soils and roots: Insights into protein yield enhancement by Methylophilaceae.

This study aimed to determine key factors for enriching methylotrophic populations for single-cell protein (SCP) production and to determine the predominant active methylotrophs. Microbial populations from rice paddy soils and roots, hotspots for CH4 oxidation, underwent serial incubation by feeding CH4 and O2. The protein content was primarily influenced by the incubation stage, with a lesser effect from the rice plant roots as an inoculum source, reaching a maximum of 20 % in biomass dominated by Methylomonadaceae and Methylophilaceae. While Methylomonadaceae as CH4 oxidizers exhibited lower

[Aerobic methylobacteria as the basis for a biosensor for dichloromethane detection].

Cells of dichloromethane (DChM) bacteria-destructors were immobilized by sorption on different types of membranes, which were fixed on the measuring surface of a pH-sensitive field transistor. The presence of DChM in the medium (0.6-8.8 mM) led to a change in the transistor's output signal, which was determined by the appearance of H+ ions in the medium due to DChM utilization by methylobateria. Among four strains of methylobacteria--Methylobacterium dichloromethanicum DM4, Methylobacterium extorquens DM 17, Methylopila helvetica DM6, and Ancylobacter dichloromethanicus DM 16--the highest and

Congo River Bacterioplankton Genomic Diversity Reflects Water Travel Time, Wetland Habitats, and Greenhouse Gases.

Tropical rivers are major contributors to global carbon cycling, yet the microbial communities driving these transformations remain largely uncharacterized. We investigated bacterioplankton communities along the northwest Congo watershed using 16S rRNA and metagenomic sequencing, paired with hydrological, biogeochemical, and greenhouse gas data. In large rivers, community composition correlated with temperature and water travel time, while smaller streams were shaped by nutrient chemistry and landscape. Most sites were dominated by Burkholderiales, but composition varied, especially in DOC-ric

Impact of Dust Storms on Airborne Bacteria, Heavy Metals, and Inflammatory Markers in Asthmatic Patients.

Asthma, a chronic bronchial disorder prevalent in children/adolescents, is exacerbated under environmental conditions like dust storms. The current study investigated heavy metal levels, airborne bacteria, and serum IL-4/IL-8 in asthmatics during before/after dust storms in Iraq's Al-Anbar, Baghdad, and Kirkuk provinces. Airborne heavy metals were quantified by ICP-MS, serum cytokines by ELISA, and bacterial communities via metagenomics. Statistical analysis was performed using GraphPad Prism (p < 0.05 significant). ICP-MS revealed considerably elevated post-storm concentrations of As, Ag, B,

Parasitic connections: a patescibacterial epibiont, its methylotrophic gammaproteobacterial host, and their phages.

Patescibacteriota form a very diverse and widely distributed phylum of small bacteria inferred to have an episymbiotic lifestyle. However, the prevalence of this lifestyle within the phylum and its host specificity remain poorly known due to the scarcity of cultured representatives. Here, we describe a complex system consisting of a patescibacterium, its gammaproteobacterial hosts, and their respective phages based on enrichment cultures and metagenomic data from two shallow, geographically close, freshwater ecosystems. The patescibacterium Strigamonas methylophilicida sp. nov. defines a new g

Methane-powered sea spiders: Diverse, epibiotic methanotrophs serve as a source of nutrition for deep-sea methane seep Sericosura.

Methane seeps harbor uncharacterized animal-microbe symbioses with unique nutritional strategies. Three undescribed sea spider species (family Ammotheidae; genus Sericosura) endemic to methane seeps were found along the eastern Pacific margin, from California to Alaska, hosting diverse methane- and methanol-oxidizing bacteria on their exoskeleton. δ13C tissue isotope values of in situ specimens corroborated methane assimilation (-45‰, on average). Live animal incubations with 13C-labeled methane and methanol, followed by nanoscale secondary ion mass spectrometry, confirmed that carbon derived

Cutaneous Bacterial Communities of a Poisonous Salamander: a Perspective from Life Stages, Body Parts and Environmental Conditions.

Amphibian skin provides a habitat for bacterial communities in its mucus. Understanding the structure and function of this "mucosome" in the European fire salamander (Salamandra salamandra) is critical in the context of novel emerging pathogenic diseases. We compare the cutaneous bacterial communities of this species using amplicon-based sequencing of the 16S rRNA V4 region. Across 290 samples, over 4000 OTUs were identified, four of them consistently present in all samples. Larvae and post-metamorphs exhibited distinct cutaneous microbial communities. In adults, the parotoid gland surface had

Metagenomics coupled with thermodynamic analysis revealed a potential way to improve the nitrogen removal efficiency of the aerobic methane oxidation coupled to denitrification process under the hypoxic condition.

Aerobic methane (CH4) oxidation coupled to denitrification (AME-D) is a promising wastewater treatment process for CH4 utilization and nitrogen removal. However, it is unclear which CH4-derived carbons are suitable for the AME-D process and how these organics are metabolized. In this study, metagenomics coupled with a thermodynamic model were used to explore the microorganisms and their metabolic mechanisms in an AME-D membrane biofilm reactor (MBfR) with high nitrogen removal efficiency. Results revealed that the aerobic methanotrophs of Methylomonas with the CH4-based fermentation potential

Seasonal dynamics of bacterial community structure and function in the surf zone seawater of a recreational beach in Ostend, Belgium.

Despite the importance of bacteria in surf zone water quality, detailed insights into their community composition, functions, and seasonal dynamics at recreational beaches are scarce. This study conducted year-long, weekly monitoring of bacterial communities and environmental factors at a recreational beach in Ostend, Belgium. Using full-length 16S rRNA gene sequencing, we correlated bacterial composition and predicted functions with environmental factors to identify potential drivers. Bacterial communities were significantly affected by seasonal variations in chlorophyll a (Chl a), net primar

Microbial potential to mitigate neurotoxic methylmercury accumulation in farmlands and rice.

Toxic methylmercury (CH3Hg+) is produced by microbial conversion of inorganic mercury in hypoxic environments such as rice paddy soils, and can accumulate in rice grains. Although microbial demethylation has been recognized as a crucial pathway for CH3Hg+ degradation, the identities of microbes and pathways accountable for CH3Hg+ degradation in soil remain elusive. Here, we combine 13CH3Hg+-DNA stable-isotope probing experiments with shotgun metagenomics to explore microbial taxa and associated biochemical processes involved in CH3Hg+ degradation in paddy and upland soils. We identify Pseudart

In situ treatment of nitrate polluted groundwater by methane-dependent denitrification: meso‑scale flume proof-of-concept.

Nitrate concentrations in groundwater frequently exceed the EU drinking water limit of 50 mgL⁻¹, threatening drinking water quality. This study evaluates a novel in situ nitrate removal strategy based on methane injection to stimulate autochthonous denitrifiers. Methane was injected into a meso‑scale artificial aquifer equipped with horizontal injection wells and a comprehensive monitoring system. We hypothesized that methane injection promotes methanotrophic denitrification and enhances microbial nitrate removal in groundwater. Following methane injection over four months, nitrate concentrati

Effect of Fe(II) on reactivity of heterotrophic denitrifiers in the remediation of nitrate- and Fe(II)-contaminated groundwater.

Heterotrophic denitrifiers, capable of simultaneous nitrate reduction and Fe(II) oxidation, can be applied for the remediation of nitrate and Fe(II) combined contamination in groundwater. Under strictly anaerobic condition, denitrifying microbial communities were enriched with the coexistence of soluble nitrate, Fe(II) and associated nutrient elements to monitor the denitrification process. Low abundance of Fe(II) (e.g., 10 mg L-1 in this study) tended to stimulate the activity of denitrifying microbial communities. However, elevated Fe(II) concentration (50 and 100 mg L-1 in this study), acte

Methylotenera oryzisoli sp. nov., a lanthanide-dependent methylotrophic bacteria isolated from rice field soil.

A new lanthanide (Ln3+)-dependent methanol-utilizing bacterial strain, La3113T, was isolated from rice field soil and its taxonomic position was investigated using polyphasic approaches. The strain was aerobic, Gram-stain-negative, strongly motile, catalase-positive and cytochrome oxidase-positive. It could neither catalyse the hydrolysis of urea nor reduce nitrate to nitrite. Growth was observed within a temperature range of 10-40 °C and a pH range of 6-8, with optimum growth at 28 °C and pH 7. Methylamine was utilized as the single source of energy, carbon and nitrogen, and it was oxidized b

Diversity and distribution of the lanthanome in aerobic methane-oxidising bacteria.

BACKGROUND: Lanthanides (Ln) play important and often regulatory roles in the metabolism of methylotrophs, including methanotrophs, particularly through their involvement in methanol oxidation. However, the diversity, distribution, and ecological relevance of Ln-associated proteins (the lanthanome) in aerobic methane-oxidising bacteria (MOB) remain underexplored. This study investigates the lanthanome using genome, plasmid, and proteome data, alongside metatranscriptome data from methane-rich lake sediments. RESULTS: We surveyed 179 genomes spanning Proteobacterial, Verrucomicrobial, and Acti
