Improved Visualization of Oral Microbial Consortia.

Bacteria on the tongue dorsum (TD) form consortia tens to hundreds of microns in diameter organized around a core of epithelial cells. Whole-mount preparations have been instrumental in revealing their organization and specific microbial associations. However, their thickness and intricate 3-dimensional complexity present challenges for a comprehensive spatial analysis. To overcome these challenges, we employed a complementary approach: embedding in hydrophilic plastic followed by sectioning and postsectioning labeling. Samples were labeled by hybridization with multiplexed fluorescent oligonu

Engineering division of labor in microbial consortia for bioprocessing.

As engineering goals in microbial bioprocessing become increasingly complex, functional programmability in single strains is often limited due to finite cellular resources and space, as well as incompatibilities among individual pathway components. Microbial division of labor (DOL) through synthetic consortia offers an alternative strategy for bioprocessing by dividing and distributing target functions among individual members of microbial communities. In doing so, DOL can alleviate intrinsic limitations such as metabolic burden and pathway interference, while also facilitating system organiza

Microfluidic enrichment of proteolytic microbial consortia from sewage sludge.

UNLABELLED: Proteolytic microbial consortia are key drivers of protein hydrolysis in complex organic substrates. In anaerobic digestion systems, such as those used for biogas production from sewage sludge, this process constitutes the initial and rate-limiting step. Despite their importance, proteolytic microorganisms remain poorly characterized due to the complexity of environmental microbiomes and the limitations of conventional cultivation and screening methods. Here, we present a label-free microfluidic protocol for the high-throughput cultivation and characterization of proteolytic microo

Metabolomics-Based Selection of Biostimulant and Biocontrol Microbial Consortia.

Microbial biostimulants and microbial plant protection products overlap in biological function, creating both R&D opportunities and regulatory challenges. In particular, multi-strain bacterial consortia may simultaneously affect nutrient mobilisation and abiotic stress tolerance, induce resistance, and demonstrate direct antagonism against phytopathogens. This multifunctionality complicates early product development because strain identity alone is sometimes insufficient in predicting product function, efficacy, or the most appropriate regulatory and claims strategy. Here, we used non-targeted

Methanogenic biodegradation of cyclohexane by microbial consortia from oil sands tailings.

Cyclohexane, a significant component of light oils and some refined fuels, can be introduced into the environment through petroleum production and fuel spills; it is also present in tailings from certain surface-mined oil sands ores. The environmental fate of cyclohexane is cryptic in oxygen-depleted methanogenic environments. Indigenous microorganisms in primary oil sands tailings cultures and cyclohexane-adapted-d12 enrichments were used to test methanogenic biodegradation of 1 mM cyclohexane alone or with the potential co-substrate n-heptane in a 70:30 mixture. We assessed substrate depleti

Defined Electrosynthetic Microbial Consortia Reveal Electron Transfer Modes Governing Acetate Production.

Precise manipulation of interspecies electron transfer (IET) is critical for advancing microbial electrosynthesis (MES) toward efficient CO2 bioconversion. Here, defined synthetic consortia are constructed by pairing Shewanella oneidensis MR-1, a model bidirectional electroactive bacterium, with Clostridium aceticum (electroactive acetogen) or Acetobacterium woodii (nonelectroactive acetogen), mimicking functional guilds commonly observed in natural MES communities. Co-cultivation markedly boosts acetate production by up to 88%, achieving 1.16 ± 0.01 and 1.05 ± 0.01 g L-1, with carbon conversi

Towards syngas biorefineries: The potential of microbial consortia for syngas valorisation.

Gasification has emerged as a promising platform to cope with recalcitrant organic waste within the framework of biomass-based biorefineries, producing syngas that can be fermented into valuable bioproducts. Despite its potential, syngas fermentation is based predominantly on pure cultures, which faces significant challenges, including the limited portfolio of generated compounds (primarily acetate and ethanol) and their low productivity. To address these bottlenecks, the potential of microbial consortia as effective platforms for syngas conversion has been evaluated. Syngas biomethanation usi

Mixing of Two Microbial Consortia in the Search for Stimulating Chromium Depletion.

Two bacterial consortia (C55 and C33), obtained from an industrial residue contaminated with hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)), were used to study the behavior of their mixture for depleting this ion in liquid media. In the absence of Cr(VI), C55 showed a greater growth rate than C33, while the latter exhibited biofilm formation. In the presence of this ion, C55 showed resistance up to 800 mg·L-1 and an ability to diminish up to 400 mg·L-1 of the Cr(VI) from the medium, while for C33, these concentrations were 400 and 200 mg·L-1, respectively. Bacterial synergism between these consortia was evaluat

Enhancing cow manure composting via staged inoculation of functional microbial consortia.

Aerobic composting of cattle manure is often limited by slow humification and long duration. This study evaluated a staged inoculation strategy using phase-specific microbial consortia to enhance composting efficiency. Cow manure and rice straw were composted under four treatments: no inoculant (W), staged commercial EM inoculant (EM), single initial composite inoculant (TF), and staged targeted consortia (YF). The YF treatment achieved the longest thermophilic phase (11 days, peak 62.87 °C), the highest humic substances (122.02 g/kg) and humic acid (92.32 g/kg), and the highest total nitrogen

Genome-resolved characterization of microbial consortia driving glyphosate degradation in soil.

Glyphosate is a widely used non-selective herbicide associated with ecological and human health concerns due to its environmental persistence, highlighting the need for effective remediation strategies. Among available approaches, microbial enzyme-mediated degradation represents a promising biological solution. This study aimed to enrich and characterize glyphosate-degrading microbial consortia from coffee plantation soils, validate glyphosate and aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) degradation by chromatographic analyses, and integrate genome-based functional annotation with comparative structu

Assembly strategies for rubber-degrading microbial consortia based on omics tools.

Numerous microorganisms, including bacteria and fungus, have been identified as capable of degrading rubber. Rubber biodegradation is still understudied due to its high stability and the lack of well-defined pathways and efficient enzymes involved in microorganism metabolism. However, rubber products manufacture and usage cause substantial environmental issues, and present physical-chemical methods involve dangerous chemical solvents, massive energy, and trash with health hazards. Eco-friendly solutions are required in this context, and biotechnological rubber treatment offers considerable pro

Halotolerant microbial consortia able to degrade highly recalcitrant plant biomass substrate.

The microbial degradation of plant-derived compounds under salinity stress remains largely underexplored. The pretreatment of lignocellulose material, which is often needed to improve the production of lignocellulose monomers, leads to high salt levels, generating a saline environment that raises technical considerations that influence subsequent downstream processes. Here, we constructed halotolerant lignocellulose degrading microbial consortia by enriching a salt marsh soil microbiome on a recalcitrant carbon and energy source, i.e., wheat straw. The consortia were obtained after six cycles

Analyzing the Effect of Microbial Consortia Fermentation on the Quality of HnB by Untargeted Metabolomics.

Fermentation has been identified as an effective strategy to alter the chemical makeup of tobacco, thereby enhancing its quality. The deliberate introduction of microorganisms can hasten the fermentation process. In this research, microbial consortia harvested from the tobacco surface were utilized to enhance the tobacco quality. This enhancement also elevated several sensory attributes of HnB cigarettes, such as aroma richness, moisture, strength, and reduced irritation, achieving a sensory quality rating of 84.5. This marks a notable improvement compared to the 82 rating of the original, unf

Microbial consortia for pesticide biodegradation: mechanisms, cross-class pathways, and translational challenges.

The use of synthetic pesticides estimated at 4.1 million metric tons annually worldwide, has led to widespread contamination of soils and aquatic environments, with documented risks to ecosystem integrity and human health. Physicochemical remediation methods are costly and often generate secondary pollutants and toxic intermediates, making microbial bioremediation a lower-residue alternative to physicochemical treatment. Because pesticide degradation in natural environments is rarely achieved by single microbial species, this review critically synthesizes evidence on multi-species microbial co

Ibuprofen degradation by mixed bacterial consortia: Metabolic pathway and microbial community analysis.

Degradation of ibuprofen, one of the most consumed drugs globally, by a mixed bacterial consortium was investigated. A contaminated hospital soil was used to enrich a bacterial consortium possessing the ability to degrade 4 mg/L ibuprofen in 6 days, fed on 6 mM acetate as a supplementary carbon source. Maximum ibuprofen degradation achieved was 99.51%, and for optimum ibuprofen degradation modelled statistically, the initial ibuprofen concentration, and temperature were determined to be 0.515 mg/L and 35 °C, respectively. The bacterial community analyses demonstrated an enrichment of Pseudomon

Use of Anaerobic Sludge Microbial Consortia in a Microbial Fuel Cell Biosensor for Biochemical Oxygen Demand Measurement.

Effective management of wastewater treatment plants often requires real-time measurements of Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD). Conventional methods for determining Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) are often time-consuming, labor-intensive and prone to inaccuracies. Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs) have emerged as a viable alternative technology for BOD measurement, offering real-time monitoring capability. However, challenges remain in its validity for testing different types of wastewater. This study developed a cost-effective dual-chamber MFC with graphite felt electrodes and a CMI-7000 membrane, i

"Stop, Little Pot" as the Motto of Suppressive Management of Various Microbial Consortia.

The unresolved challenges in the development of highly efficient, stable and controlled synthetic microbial consortia, as well as the use of natural consortia, are very attractive for science and technology. However, the consortia management should be done with the knowledge of how not only to accelerate but also stop the action of such "little pots". Moreover, there are a lot of microbial consortia, the activity of which should be suppressively controlled. The processes, catalyzed by various microorganisms being in complex consortia which should be slowed down or completely cancelled, are typ

Synthetic microbial consortia to enhance the biodegradation of compost odor by biotrickling filter.

Composting generates odorous gases, including ammonia (NH3), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The Biological Trickling Filter (BTF) is effective for odor treatment, but it may have limitations with hydrophobic VOCs. In this study, a strain of Bacillus subtilis with ammonia-reducing ability, a strain of Bacillus cereus with desulfurization ability and a strain of Schizophyllum commune with the ability to degrade dimethyl disulfide were isolated and screened. The three strains were combined to create synthetic microbial consortia for enhancing odor treatment in the

Quinolone-mediated metabolic cross-feeding develops aluminium tolerance in soil microbial consortia.

Aluminium (Al)-tolerant beneficial bacteria confer resistance to Al toxicity to crops in widely distributed acidic soils. However, the mechanism by which microbial consortia maintain Al tolerance under acid and Al toxicity stress remains unknown. Here, we demonstrate that a soil bacterial consortium composed of Rhodococcus erythropolis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa exhibit greater Al tolerance than either bacterium alone. P. aeruginosa releases the quorum sensing molecule 2-heptyl-1H-quinolin-4-one (HHQ), which is efficiently degraded by R. erythropolis. This degradation reduces population densit

Microbial Consortia-Dependent Evolution of Physicochemical, Compositional and Functional Properties in Kombucha Fermentation.

In recent decades, kombucha, a beverage produced through the fermentation of tea leaves by a symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeasts (SCOBY), has gained considerable popularity and attracted increasing scientific interest. However, the influence of SCOBY composition on kombucha characteristics remains insufficiently explored. In the present study, green tea kombuchas fermented with four different SCOBYs (SCs) were monitored over 21 days through physicochemical (pH), biochemical (total soluble solids (TSS), ethanol, proteins, and phenolic compounds), and microbiological (yeasts, acetic acid ba
