Microclimate-based oviposition site selection in butterflies and moths.

The sites herbivorous insects select to deposit eggs determine to a variable degree the environment their larvae will experience during development. Therefore, oviposition site selection should be seen as a significant life-history trait affecting the survival of the offspring. While searching for suitable sites, egg-laying terrestrial insects are predicted to respond to environmental factors that function as indicators for larval development and survival. In herbivorous insects, such as butterflies and moths, microclimate may be of significance for the selection of a suitable host plant or sp

Measurement of microclimates in a warming world: problems and solutions.

As the world warms, it will be tempting to relate the biological responses of terrestrial animals to air temperature. But air temperature typically plays a lesser role in the heat exchange of those animals than does radiant heat. Under radiant load, animals can gain heat even when body surface temperature exceeds air temperature. However, animals can buffer the impacts of radiant heat exposure: burrows and other refuges may block solar radiant heat fully, but trees and agricultural shelters provide only partial relief. For animals that can do so effectively, evaporative cooling will be used to

[Effect of acoustic microclimate prevailing in shipyards on the health of workers].

Yearly measurements of external noise (Noise--Pollution--Level) in the shipyard in Stettin, indicated noise levels above 85 dBA, expressed in LqM. On the ground of documentation of periodic medical examinations of the staff, one compared the rate of occurrence of disturbances in health state, such as: hearing impairment, gastric and duodenal peptic ulcer, hypertension and psychic disturbances in two groups of employees: "A"--exposed during work to noise 85 dBA and "B"--employed at the area of LqM smaller by 20 dBA. Statistically significant differences in the rates of occurrence of disturbance

Microclimate habitats of Culex mosquitoes in urban desert environments.

Culex mosquitoes are important vectors of West Nile virus, and, as small-bodied ectotherms, are sensitive to temperature. This is especially important for juvenile stages, which are confined to the body of water where they hatched and are unable to relocate for thermoregulation. In an urban desert like Maricopa County, Arizona, where Culex tarsalis and Culex quinquefasciatus are prominent, the macroclimate is strongly influenced by the urban heat island effect where larval thermal maxima are frequently exceeded. Understanding the local temperatures (microclimates) of sites that mosquitoes choo

Textiles and human skin, microclimate, cutaneous reactions: an overview.

This article overviews research in the interdisciplinary area of textile/skin interaction and related cutaneous intolerance. Microclimate in the skin/clothing system and especially the skin responses relates to the moisture and heat transfer within this system and plays a critical role in skin irritation from textiles. A discussion is then given on skin irritation reactions to textiles, including intolerance caused by chemicals (dyes and finishes) and physical contact/friction. Finally, two skin injuries, blisters and pressure ulcers, which are caused by physical contact, pressure, and frictio

Is in-Shoe Microclimate a Neglected Contributor in the Pathway to Diabetic Foot Ulceration?

The identification of the key contributing factors which predispose the foot to ulceration, increasing the risk of recurrence and slow wound healing in diabetes mellitus (DM), has led to some significant research studies over the last 30 years, providing valuable insight into the mechanism leading to diabetic foot ulceration (DFU). Although, these contributory factors are similar to those identified in pressure ulceration occurring in other parts of the body (such as "bed pressure sores') where magnitude and/or duration of mechanical stress in the presence of sensory deficits are key causal fa

Effects of potential damaging agents on the microclimate-pH in the rat jejunum.

This study was designed to determine the pH of the intestinal surface in the rat jejunum in an attempt to investigate the effect of potential damaging agents on the microclimate-pH. A significant pH gradient was observed between the mucosal surface and the bulk phase; however, the microclimate-pH usually ranged from 6.5 to 7.5, irrespective of the wide range in the bulk pH. When the bulk pH was either 7.3 or 4, the microclimate-pH was approximately 6.7, while the microclimate-pH was approximately 7.4 when the bulk pH was raised to 9. The distance of the pH gradient was found to be approximatel

Acid microclimate in coeliac and Crohn's disease: a model for folate malabsorption.

The surface pH of human proximal jejunum was measured in biopsy samples and found to be more acid than the phosphate buffer in which they were incubated. The in vitro jejunal surface pH was 5.93 +/- 0.05 in control subjects and 6.19 +/- 0.09 in treated coeliac patients. A group of untreated coeliac patients with a surface pH of 6.56 +/- 0.14 had a significantly less acid surface pH compared to controls, as did a group of Crohn's patients with a surface pH of 6.21 +/- 0.04. These two groups with a significantly raised surface pH were subdivisible into 'high' and 'low'groups. Surface pH was foun

Temporal Correlation Between Urban Microclimate, Vector Mosquito Abundance, and Dengue Cases.

Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) is a major mosquito-borne viral disease. Studies have reported a strong correlation between weather, the abundance of Aedes aegypti, the vector of DHF virus, and dengue incidence. However, this conclusion has been based on the general climate pattern of wide regions. In general, however, the human population, level of infrastructure, and land-use change in rural and urban areas often produce localized climate patterns that may influence the interaction between climate, vector abundance, and dengue incidence. Thoroughly understanding this correlation will allow th

Evaporative microclimate interval cooling reduces heat stress in thermal insulating protective clothing.

BACKGROUND: Water vapour resistance of thermal insulating protective clothing impedes sweat evaporation, the most substantial pathway of heat dissipation for working humans. Consequently, metabolic heat can increase body core temperature rapidly, which can result in life-threatening heat illnesses. The evaporative microclimate cooling method Dry Air Comfort (DAC) has been shown to be very effective for reducing the risk of heat induced illnesses. Aim of this study was to determine whether DAC can also prevent heat stress when used in intervals. METHODS: Using a balanced within-subject design

Prediction of Diabetic Foot Ulceration: The Value of Using Microclimate Sensor Arrays.

BACKGROUND: Accurately predicting the risk of diabetic foot ulceration (DFU) could dramatically reduce the enormous burden of chronic wound management and amputation. Yet, the current prognostic models are unable to precisely predict DFU events. Typically, efforts have focused on individual factors like temperature, pressure, or shear rather than the overall foot microclimate. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted by searching PubMed reports with no restrictions on start date covering the literature published until February 20, 2019 using relevant keywords, including temperature, pressur

Microclimate and the zoonotic cycle of tick-borne encephalitis virus in Switzerland.

The focal distribution of tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV; Flaviviridae, Flavivirus) appears to depend mainly on cofeeding transmission between infected Ixodes ricinus L. nymphs and uninfected larvae. To better understand the role of cofeeding ticks in the transmission of TBEV, we investigated tick infestation of rodents and the influence of microclimate on the seasonality of questing I. ricinus ticks. A 3-yr study was carried out at four sites, including two confirmed TBEV foci. Free-living ticks and rodents were collected monthly, and microclimatic data were recorded. A decrease in quest

Field Margin Vegetation Structure Buffers Microclimate Extremes in Temperate Agricultural Landscapes.

Field margins in agricultural landscapes range from herbaceous strips to tree-rich hedgerows, influencing microclimate and wildlife habitat quality. Despite their ecological importance, the microclimatic properties of structurally diverse field margins remain poorly quantified. We investigated how local field margin vegetation structure and landscape context influence microclimatic conditions and assessed how temperature measurement methodology, specifically the use of shielded versus unshielded sensors and the choice of temperature reference, affects estimates of thermal buffering. From June

Acidic colonic microclimate--possible reason for false negative hydrogen breath tests.

About 5% of normal subjects fail to produce increased hydrogen breath concentration after ingestion of the non-digestible carbohydrate lactulose (low hydrogen producers). The existence of low hydrogen producers limits the diagnostic use of hydrogen (H2) breath tests. We studied the effects of lactulose and of magnesium sulphate (MgSO4) pretreatment on stool-pH and on hydrogen exhalation after oral loading with lactulose or lactose in 17 hydrogen producers and 12 low hydrogen producers. In seven hydrogen producers acidification of stool pH by lactulose pretreatment (20 g tid) decreased hydrogen

Changes in the coelomic microclimate during carbon dioxide laparoscopy: morphological and functional implications.

In this article the adverse effects of laparoscopic CO2 pneumoperitoneum and coelomic climate change, and their potential prevention by warmed, humidified carbon dioxide insufflation are reviewed. The use of pressurized cold, dry carbon dioxide (C02) pneumoperitoneum causes a number of local effects on the peritoneal mesothelium, as well as systemic effects. These can be observed at a macroscopic, microscopic, cellular and metabolic level. Local effects include evaporative cooling, oxidative stress, desiccation of mesothelium, disruption of mesothelial cell junctions and glycocalyx, diminished
