Inhibition of diptheroid esterase by Micrococcus luteus.

Micrococcus luteus produced a diffusible, esterase inhibitory factor (EIF) which inhibited the activity of cutaneous diphtheroid esterases on Tween 80-CaCl2 agar media. Esterases of Staphylococcus, Micrococcus, Bacillus, and Serratia were not susceptible. EIF did not appear to combine with the substrate or to prevent enzyme synthesis; it was unable to reverse the precipitation of calcium oleate. The composition of the medium, especially peptones, influenced the production of EIF. EIF was synthesized in the absence of diphtheroids, but production required the presence of Tween. The interaction

A Proteomic Signature of Dormancy in the Actinobacterium Micrococcus luteus.

Dormancy is a protective state in which diverse bacteria, including Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Staphylococcus aureus, Treponema pallidum (syphilis), and Borrelia burgdorferi (Lyme disease), curtail metabolic activity to survive external stresses, including antibiotics. Evidence suggests dormancy consists of a continuum of interrelated states, including viable but nonculturable (VBNC) and persistence states. VBNC and persistence contribute to antibiotic tolerance, reemergence from latent infections, and even quorum sensing and biofilm formation. Previous studies indicate that the protein mecha

[Micrococcus luteus: a rare pathogen of valve prosthesis endocarditis].

A rare case of prosthetic valve endocarditis caused by Micrococcus luteus is described and compared with the few cases reported in the literature, as well as the clinical features, microbiological profile, therapy, and prognosis of common prosthetic valve endocarditis. Micrococcus luteus is a constituent of the normal human buccal bacterial flora which forms yellowish colonies and appears as a gram-positive coccus typically arranged in tetrades. Although of low virulence, the germ may become pathogenic in patients with impaired resistance, colonizing the surface of heart valves. In contrast to

Unveiling the genomic secrets of Micrococcus luteus through a comprehensive comparative genomics approach.

The central motivation of this study was to analyze the unknown genomic facts of the ubiquitously distributed bacterium Micrococcus luteus using in silico comparative genomic analysis. A total of 100 contamination-free genomes were retrieved from the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). Among them, 12 strains from six different isolation sources were selected based on their ANI (average nucleotide identity) values to explore their niche-specific adaptation. Prokka annotation revealed that their total genome size ranged from 2.4 to 2.8 Mb, with plant-growth-promoting and heavy-

Intracranial Micrococcus Luteus Infection Mimicking Brain Metastases on 18 F-FDG PET/CT.

An 86-year-old man presented with slurred speech and right lower limb shaking for 1 month. Initial brain MRI revealed an abnormal signal lesion in the left parietal lobe with peripheral parenchymal edema, and brain metastases were suspected. Subsequent PET/CT showed increased focal FDG uptake in the left parietal lobe, accompanied by bands of surrounding brain parenchyma edema. No other abnormal lesions were observed on 18 F-FDG PET/CT except for increased inflammatory lymph node activity in the left hilar region. Finally, the cerebrospinal fluid puncture culture showed a Micrococcus luteus in

Genome sequence of the Fleming strain of Micrococcus luteus, a simple free-living actinobacterium.

Micrococcus luteus (NCTC2665, "Fleming strain") has one of the smallest genomes of free-living actinobacteria sequenced to date, comprising a single circular chromosome of 2,501,097 bp (G+C content, 73%) predicted to encode 2,403 proteins. The genome shows extensive synteny with that of the closely related organism, Kocuria rhizophila, from which it was taxonomically separated relatively recently. Despite its small size, the genome harbors 73 insertion sequence (IS) elements, almost all of which are closely related to elements found in other actinobacteria. An IS element is inserted into the r

Native valve infective endocarditis due to Micrococcus luteus in a non-Hodgkin's lymphoma patient.

Micrococcus species are typically considered contaminants from skin and mucous membranes. However, especially in severely immunocompromised patients, a blood culture with Micrococcus could be the cause of a significant infection. We report a 65-year-old female with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma who developed native valve infective endocarditis due to Micrococcus luteus. There is no defined therapeutic regimen for infective endocarditis due to Micrococcus luteus; however, our patient was successfully treated for six weeks with vancomycin and rifampin. To our knowledge, there is only one other case rep

Clinical Characteristics of Patients with Micrococcus luteus Bloodstream Infection in a Chinese Tertiary-Care Hospital.

Few pieces of research have focused on Micrococcus luteus bloodstream infection (BSI) because of its low incidence; hence data is needed to illustrate this uncommon infection. This study aimed to explore the clinical characteristics of patients with M. luteus BSI. From January 2010 to December 2019, inpatients that met the criteria for M. luteus BSI were included in this study. Data was collected by reviewing electronic records. Ninety-seven patients were enrolled in this study. Sixty-three percent of the patients have a higher neutrophil percentage (NEUT%). The average blood C-reactive protei

Synergistic inactivation of Micrococcus luteus and its biofilms by 5-aminolevulinic acid-mediated photodynamic therapy.

BACKGROUND: Micrococcus luteus is an opportunistic nosocomial bacterial species with the ability to form biofilms on medical devices, and the emergence of antibiotic tolerance in M. luteus necessitates the development of alternative therapeutic strategies. 5-Aminolevulinic acid-mediated photodynamic therapy (ALA-PDT) represents a promising alternative, leveraging the bacterial endogenous heme biosynthetic pathway to generate cytotoxic reactive oxygen species upon light activation. METHODS: The intrinsic heme biosynthesis pathway of M. luteus was utilized for photosensitizer production. Bacter

Antiviral activity of Micrococcus luteus against the infection of bean yellow mosaic virus in faba bean.

INTRODUCTION: Plant viruses severely affect agricultural crops and are the cause of almost half of all major plant diseases. No successful antiviral agents are now widely available for agricultural use against phytoviruses. METHODS: Micrococcus luteus was collected from the rhizosphere of faba bean and molecularly characterized via the 16S rRNA (Acc# PV650302). Soil inoculation greatly enhanced growth and induced systemic resistance to BYMV (Bean yellow mosaic virus) infection in faba bean plants grown in the greenhouse or field conditions. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Soil drenching application

Three Weeks of Treatment Induced Long-term Remission in a Patient with Micrococcus luteus-related Peritonitis.

Micrococcus luteus can cause relapsing and refractory peritoneal dialysis infection because it leads to strong biofilm formation. A 69-year-old woman who had undergone peritoneal dialysis (PD) visited the emergency department complaining of cloudy peritoneal dialysate. She was initially given intraperitoneal cefazolin (1 g/day) and ceftazidime (1 g/day). Micrococcus luteus was detected in a culture test. Thus, ceftazidime was discontinued. She remained disease-free for 22 months until she developed PD-related peritonitis. We administered antibiotics for 21 days and thereafter identified 2 impo

Micrococcus luteus-induced prosthetic valve infective endocarditis in an immunocompetent patient: a case report from India.

Micrococcus luteus (M. luteus) is a Gram-positive microorganism that typically dwells in environments such as soil, water, and human skin, hence, entitling it as a contaminant organism. However, there are instances where M. luteus affects immunocompromised patients, such as in infective endocarditis and septic arthritis, but typically among immunocompromised patients. However, an evolutionary change has been observed in the infectious capability of this organism especially with reports emerging on its instance among immunocompetent population. A 68-year-old female presented to the emergency me

Brain abscess caused by Micrococcus luteus in a patient with systemic lupus erythematosus: case-based review.

Central nervous system infections, which are rarely seen in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), have considerably high mortality but they are difficult to distinguish from neuropsychiatric manifestation of lupus. This article reports the case of a patient with SLE with brain abscess which developed during immunosuppressive therapy for lupus nephritis. The patient completely recovered without neurological sequelae by open surgical drainage and 12-week antibiotic therapy. It is recommended that CNS infections must be excluded in patients with SLE, particularly who are receiving immunosuppressive

Poly(adenosine diphosphoribose) synthesis in ultraviolet-irradiated xeroderma pigmentosum cells reconstituted with Micrococcus luteus UV endonuclease.

Synthesis of DNA and poly(adenosine diphosphoribose) [poly(ADPR)] was examined in permeabilized xeroderma pigmentosum lymphoblasts (XP3BE) before and after UV irradiation and in the presence and absence of Micrococcus luteus UV endonuclease. M. luteus UV endonuclease had no effect on the level of DNA or poly(ADPR) synthesis in control, unirradiated cells. UV irradiation caused a decrease in replicative DNA synthesis without any significant change in poly(ADPR) synthesis. In UV-irradiated cells treated with M. luteus UV endonuclease, DNA synthesis was restored to a level slightly greater than i

A skin isolate of Micrococcus luteus negates the Staphylococcus aureus-induced release of type 2 cytokines from keratinocytes.

Staphylococcus aureus second immunoglobulin-binding protein (Sbi) is a unique type 2-promoting virulence factor that induces IL-33 and thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP) release. This mechanism is essential for the development of S. aureus-induced eczema in the widely used NC/Tnd mouse model of human atopic dermatitis (AD). Microbiome shifts in AD suggest that microbiota could modulate the disease. We therefore sought to identify skin bacteria that attenuate S. aureus-induced IL-33/TSLP release from keratinocytes. Micrococcus luteus was unique among skin isolates in its ability to negate cyto

Adaptive laboratory evolution of Micrococcus luteus and identification of genes associated with radioresistance through genome-wide association study.

Micrococcus luteus (V017) is a Gram-positive bacterium that was isolated from a sterilization area exposed to 60Co radiation. In this study, we performed an adaptive laboratory evolution experiment with M. luteus, exposing it to 24 continuous cycles of gamma irradiation at four different doses (1.5 kGy, 3.5 kGy, 5.5 kGy, and 7.5 kGy). This led to the creation of four evolved populations with different levels of radioresistance, which were positively correlated with the radiation dose applied. The survival rate of the evolved population that underwent adaptive treatment at the highest dose (7.5
