Novel genes linked to Class II Division 1 malocclusion with mandibular micrognathism.

INTRODUCTION: Mandibular micrognathism (MM) is an underdeveloped mandible resulting from complex interactions between genetic and environmental factors. Prior research focused mainly on the genetic determinants of mandibular retrognathism, not necessarily reflecting micrognathism, thus supporting the need to study MM. This study aimed to explore the inheritance pattern and identify the candidate genes involved in the development and familial transmission of MM. METHODS: Diagnosing probands with MM was based on clinical and lateral cephalometric data. The pedigrees were drawn for 11 identified

Teratogenicity of 3,3-dimethyl-1-phenyltriazene in the rat: gross malformations including micrognathism.

3,3-Dimethyl-1-phenyltriazene (DMPT), an alkylating agent, has been reported to be teratogenic in chickens, mice, and rats. One of the most commonly affected structures is the mandible; however, a complete description and incidence rates of all malformations produced have not been published. Rats were treated on day 12 of gestation (day 0 = sperm in vaginal smear) with a single intraperitoneal injection of 30 mg DMPT/kg. Fetuses were examined on each subsequent day of gestation for external and skeletal abnormalities. Standard soft tissue examinations were performed on day-20 fetuses. A high p

[Mandibular micrognathism as a sequela of early childhood capitulum fractures and their treatment using distraction osteogenesis].

We report about our experience in five patients who suffered from a mandibular micrognathia after ancylosis of the temporomandibular joint. At first the ancylosis was removed using a costochondral graft. About one year later, the mandible was cut by an osteotomy behind the last visible toothbud and a distractor was inserted. The mandible was to a slide overcorrection. This has to be taken into account to compensate a certain relapse. At first we used an unidirectional device, for one and a half years we have used a bidirectional device (Normed from Tuttlingen/Germany) which enables us to corre

Impaired mandibular growth and micrognathic development in children with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. A longitudinal study of lateral cephalographs.

The present report is a longitudinal study of the craniofacial growth, based on lateral cephalographs of a group of 26 patients with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA), and a matched English control group. In the 26 matched pairs, the mean age at baseline was 8.4 years and at 6-year follow-up 14.7 years, female/male ratio was 3.3/1, and all patients had temporomandibular joint (TMJ) abnormalities. The study revealed obvious growth disturbances in the facial skeleton in the children with JRA. Compared with the controls, the patients showed a smaller mandible with an altered morphology and posi

Polysomnographic results of prone versus supine positioning in micrognathia.

BACKGROUND: Children with micrognathia commonly present with upper airway symptoms and are at risk for developing obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Prone positioning is widely used as first-line management for micrognathic children with obstructive symptoms. The aim of the present study was to document the effect of positioning on oxygenation and upper airway obstruction as measured by polysomnography (PSG). METHODS: Three children with micrognathia from two institutions underwent PSG in both the prone and supine position. RESULTS: Patient ages were 1 week, 3 months, and 7 months. Supine obstru

Neonatal micrognathia is associated with small upper airways on radiographic measurement.

In order to determine if infants with clinical micrognathia identified in the newborn period have smaller upper airways than do normal infants, and if their airway size is related to risk of later apnoea, respiration-timed upper airway radiographic measurements were performed in 21 asymptomatic neonates with clinical micrognathia. Their radiographic measurements were compared with those of a previously reported cohort of 35 normal infants. The micrognathic infants and a control group of 27 infants referred for parental anxiety were followed for 6 mo on home apnoea monitors. Sleep apnoea at hom

69,XXX karyotype in a malformed liveborn female. Maternal origin of triploidy.

A liveborn female with a 69,XXX karyotype and clinical features of triploidy syndrome is reported. Main phenotypical features are: intrauterine growth retardation, hypotonicity, micrognathism, low-set ears, ocular anomalies, syndactyly and atrophy of the cerebral cortex and corpus callosum. Study of chromosomal heteromorphisms revealed that triploidy might have arisen through fertilization of a diploid ovum by a haploid sperm (diginy).

Mevalonic acidemia: first case of Japan.

Mevalonic acidemia is a rare metabolic disorder due to mevalonate kinase deficiency which affects the biosynthesis of cholesterol and nonsterol isoprenes. We report the first case of Japan. The clinical course is characterized by intrauterine growth retardation, postnatal growth failure, intractable diarrhea, liver dysfunctions and death at three months of age. Dysmorphic features including triangular face, protrusion of forehead, hypertelorism, low set ears and micrognathism were noted. High mevalonic acid level was found by GC/MS.

Trisomy for the distal segment of the short arm of chromosome 17 in a boy with mild mental retardation and some dysmorphic features.

The authors describe a boy with a triangular face, wide forehead, telecanthus, large ears, prominent root of the nose, long and bulging philtrum, thin upper lip, everted lower lip, high arched palate, micrognathism, pointed chin, overriding toes, joint laxity, and mild mental retardation. Cytogenetic investigation disclosed the presence of an added chromosome, a very small acrocentric, consisting in the presence of the last band of the short arm of chromosome 17. This anomaly results from a 3:1 mal segregation of a balanced (13q17p) reciprocal maternal translocation leading to a trisomy 17pter

Immediate postdelivery airway management of neonates with prenatally diagnosed micrognathia: A retrospective observational study.

INTRODUCTION: Micrognathic neonates are at risk for upper airway obstruction, and many require intubation in the delivery room. Ex-utero intrapartum treatment is one technique for managing airway obstruction but poses substantial maternal risks. Procedure requiring a second team in the operating room is an alternative approach to secure the obstructed airway while minimizing maternal risk. The aim of this study was to describe the patient characteristics, airway management, and outcomes for micrognathic neonates and their mothers undergoing a procedure requiring a second team in the operating
