Assessing phytotoxicity of microplastics on aquatic plants using fluorescent microplastics.

Although studies on microplastics are increasing every year, still very little is known about their toxicity. Especially for plant species, even studies of uptake of microplastics are only few, not to mention phytotoxicity of microplastics. Therefore, we conducted a pilot study on the phytotoxicity of 1-μm-sized fluorescent microplastics (FMPs) on the free-floating aquatic plants Spirodela polyrhiza and Salvinia natans and the emergent aquatic plant Phragmites australis using 0.1% and 0.01% FMP treatment. Furthermore, uptake of FMPs by plants was verified by detecting fluorescence of FMPs by l

Microplastics and cancer.

The pervasive spread of microplastics (MPs) in the environment (including air, water, and food) has raised concerns regarding human health. These pollutants have been detected in various human tissues such as lungs, colon, blood, placenta, tumors, and body fluids. MPs may act as vectors for toxic and carcinogenic substances, including heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants. They can induce oxidative stress, inflammation, and genotoxicity, thereby altering cellular and metabolic processes, mechanisms implicated in cancer pathogenesis. Recent studies highlight the presence of MPs in huma

Microplastics and neurotoxicity: could prenatal exposure to microplastics boost congenital enteric neuropathies?

Microplastics (MPs) pollution represents an increasing worldwide problem and a real global challenge for human health, which also affects unborn children. Specifically, during their degradation, they can release a broad range of toxic and hormonally active agents, such as plasticizers. Thus, microplastics alone are pernicious, but they often also carry other harmful chemicals and even problematic bacteria on their surface and within their structure (heavy metals, pesticides, parabens, etc.), which amplifies their toxic potential. Due to their induction of oxidative damage, inflammation, mitoch

Microplastic in human body - a critical insight into current microplastic research.

BACKGROUND: Microplastics and nanoplastics are ubiquitous environmental contaminants, and human exposure via ingestion and inhalation is increasingly recognized. Numerous studies report microplastics in human tissues and biological fluids, yet the biological relevance and robustness of these findings remain uncertain. This critical work evaluates current evidence on microplastics in the human body, focusing on exposure pathways, particle size relevance, and analytical limitations. Mechanistic data indicate that translocation across intestinal and pulmonary barriers is likely restricted to smal

Making Microplastics Matter: Classification, Politics and the Lives of Microplastics as Environmental Objects.

How do emerging environmental phenomena become actionable amid scientific uncertainty and public urgency? This article argues that to understand how microplastics become governable, we must study classification as a central site where matters of fact, concern, and care are composed. Drawing on comparative assemblage ethnography across scientific conferences, public debates, and European regulatory processes, we trace how microplastics are enacted as epistemic, public, and regulatory objects. In scientific practice, object-centered classifications aim at rendering heterogeneous particles measur

Transport of different microplastics in porous media: Effect of the adhesion of surfactants on microplastics.

The adhesion of surfactant molecules on the microplastics surface is affected by the surface structure of the microplastics. Little is known about the mobility of different microplastics in the medium under surfactants. In order to reveal the migration of different microplastics under the action of surfactants, the study selected five kinds of microplastics (polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS), polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA)) and two kinds of surfactants (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, CTAB and sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate, SDBS) as the

Hazard assessment of airborne and foodborne biodegradable polyhydroxyalkanoates microplastics and non-biodegradable polypropylene microplastics.

Microplastics (MP) are ubiquitous in the environment, and are toxic to various living organisms. Proper application of biodegradable plastics may alleviate the hazards of conventional non-biodegradable plastics. In the current study, multi-omics analyses were performed to compare the biodegradable polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) and non-biodegradable polypropylene (PP) MP for their toxicity on mouse liver and lung. Airborne PHA MP induced nasal microbiome dysbiosis, pulmonary microbiome alteration, pulmonary and serum metabolome disruption, and hepatic transcriptome disturbances, resulting in mild

Effects of microplastics on the intestines.

Microplastics (MPs) are small pieces of plastic less than 5 mm in diameter. They are formed both as a primary product, which has found use in textiles and microspheres in cosmetics, and as a secondary product, resulting from the degradation of larger pieces of plastic due to physical, chemical, and even biological factors. The intestinal barrier is one of the body’s lines of defence against the entry of MPs molecules into the body. It can enter the body through various mechanisms and cause accumulation in the intestines and other organs. Furthermore, MPs can cause changes in the function of th

Adsorption of antibiotics on microplastics.

Microplastics and antibiotics are two classes of emerging contaminants with proposed negative impacts to aqueous ecosystems. Adsorption of antibiotics on microplastics may result in their long-range transport and may cause compound combination effects. In this study, we investigated the adsorption of 5 antibiotics [sulfadiazine (SDZ), amoxicillin (AMX), tetracycline (TC), ciprofloxacin (CIP), and trimethoprim (TMP)] on 5 types of microplastics [polyethylene (PE), polystyrene (PS), polypropylene (PP), polyamide (PA), and polyvinyl chloride (PVC)] in the freshwater and seawater systems. Electrification of wind-blown microplastics and its implication for transport of floating microplastics in air.

An ongoing debate exists on the magnitude of microplastics (MPs) emissions from the soil-air interface. Electrification of airborne microplastics MPs complicated the issue of modelling the transport of MPs by wind. Here, we first report new observations of wind-blown MP particles pronounced charged through wind tunnel experiments. The charges of individual MP particles are from -1.05-6.89 pC. The results suggest that relative humidity and particle size dictated the charges and polarity of MPs. An unsaturated charge model for individual MPs is derived. It simulated that the electrification of w

Distinct microplastics abundance variation in root-associated sediments revealed the underestimation of mangrove microplastics pollution.

Mangrove sediment is acknowledged as the critical sink of microplastics (MPs). However, the potential effect of mangrove root systems on the MPs migration in sediment remains largely unknown. Here, our study characterized the spatial distribution of MPs trapped in root hair, rhizosphere, and non-rhizosphere zones, and analyzed their correlations with physicochemical properties of sediments. The significantly increased MPs abundances toward root systems shed light on the distinct effect on the migration of MPs exerted by mangrove root systems. Partial least squares path modeling (PLS-PM) analys

How do microplastics alter molluscicidal activity? Effects of weathered microplastics and niclosamide in developing freshwater snails.

Despite the wide distribution and persistence of microplastics (MPs), their interactive effects with molluscicides are unknown. Schistosomiasis, a neglected tropical disease, affects 236.6 million people worldwide. Niclosamide (NCL) is the only molluscicide recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) and it is used to control the population of Schistosoma spp.'s intermediate host. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate of the interaction between polyethylene (PE) MPs and NCL, and their associated toxicity in the freshwater snail Biomphalaria glabrata (Say 1818). Weathered PE MPs were charac

Microplastics from Ocean Depths to Landfall: Typhoon-Induced Microplastic Circulation in a Warming Climate.

This study examines the influence of typhoons on atmospheric microplastic (MP) pollution by utilizing atmospheric deposition samples collected during three typhoons in eastern China (2023-2024). MP deposition rates increased significantly during typhoons (6291-12,722 items/m2/d), followed by a sharp decline post-typhoon (48-779 items/m2/d). Typhoon periods exhibited increased polymer diversity (9 types versus 4-5 during nontyphoon periods) and a higher prevalence of small-sized MPs (<280 μm), including dense polymers like PET and PVC, indicating a potential vertical resuspension from deeper oc

Overall effects of microplastics on brain.

Microplastic (MP) and nanoplastic (NP) pollution represents a pervasive environmental issue, raising significant concerns regarding potential neurotoxicity and impacts on brain health. This review synthesizes recent research findings to provide a comprehensive overview of the effects of MPs/NPs on the brain. Evidence demonstrates that MPs/NPs can cross critical biological barriers, including the blood-brain barrier and the placenta, gaining access to the central nervous system (CNS) and the developing fetal brain, influenced by particle size, charge, and the biomolecular corona. Once present,

Invisible but Insidious Effects of Microplastics.

Increasing evidence on the adverse health impacts of microplastics (MPs) is available, but their associated risks to the well-being of humans and long-term impacts are poorly understood. An indicator of the remote effects of MPs may be their influence on the rate of aging. To assess the effects of MPs on the aging process, we used accelerated senescence OXYS rats that develop a complex of geriatric diseases. We prepared the polyethylene terephthalate MPs (2-6 microns in size) and in OXYS and Wistar (maternal strain) rats assessed the influence of chronic administration of MPs (10 or 100 mg/kg

Climate change, microplastics, and male infertility.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Semen quality is on the decline. While the etiology is unknown, recent literature suggests there may be a relationship between climate change, environmental toxins and male fertility. This review relays new information regarding associations between our environment and male infertility. RECENT FINDINGS: Several recent studies have documented a negative association between heat stress and spermatogenesis, which suggests that climate change may be a factor in declining in sperm counts. The influence of particle pollution on spermatogenesis has also been recently investigated,

Microplastics disrupt hermit crab shell selection.

Microplastics (plastics < 5 mm) are a potential threat to marine biodiversity. However, the effects of microplastic pollution on animal behaviour and cognition are poorly understood. We used shell selection in common European hermit crabs (Pagurus bernhardus) as a model to test whether microplastic exposure impacts the essential survival behaviours of contacting, investigating and entering an optimal shell. We kept 64 female hermit crabs in tanks containing either polyethylene spheres (n = 35) or no plastic (n = 29) for 5 days. We then transferred subjects into suboptimal shells and placed the

Microplastics and environmental effects: investigating the effects of microplastics on aquatic habitats and their impact on human health.

Microplastics (MPs) are particles with a diameter of <5 mm. The disposal of plastic waste into the environment poses a significant and pressing issue concern globally. Growing worry has been expressed in recent years over the impact of MPs on both human health and the entire natural ecosystem. MPs impact the feeding and digestive capabilities of marine organisms, as well as hinder the development of plant roots and leaves. Numerous studies have shown that the majority of individuals consume substantial quantities of MPs either through their dietary intake or by inhaling them. MPs have been ide
