Computational modeling of heterodimers of mono- and diradical molecules with C60- indicates that scanning probe microscopy could characterize multicenter covalent-like interactions, also known as pancake bonds, on surfaces. By functionalizing the SPM tip with C60 and creating its monoanionic state by applying the corresponding voltage, individual pancake-bonded heterodimers with various radical molecules can be formed and characterized. All three proposed radical/diradical molecules readily form pancake-bonded dimers with C60-, and their structural and energetic minima are easily discernible f

Atomic force microscopy (AFM) continues to be developed, not only in design, but also in application. The new focus of using AFM is changing from pure material to biomedical studies. More frequently, it is being used in combination with other optical imaging methods, such as confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) and fluorescent imaging, to provide a more comprehensive understanding of biological systems. To date, AFM has been used increasingly as a precise micromanipulator, probing and altering the mechanobiological characteristics of living cells and tissues, in order to examine specific,

Near-field scanning microwave microscopy (NSMM) offers the ability to probe local electromagnetic properties beyond the classical Abbe diffraction limit, but achieving high resolution over practical scan areas remains challenging. In this work, we introduce a novel three-dimensional (3D) NSMM probe consisting of a split-ring resonator (SRR) coupled to a microstrip line and loaded with vertically extended metallic bars. The 3D loading enhances electric-field localization in the sensing region by introducing field singularities. Full-wave numerical simulations are used to extract the field-sprea

Developing high-performance, miniaturized 2D material platforms requires a deep, multiscale understanding of gas-surface interactions and localized electronic behavior. In this study, we demonstrate an integrated experimental methodology that combines in situ environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) with ex situ scanning probe microscopy (SPM) to analyze monolayer graphene field-effect transistor (GFET) sensors before and after controlled nitrogen (N2) exposure. In situ electrical measurements performed inside the ESEM chamber show a continuous, monotonic increase in graphene channel

Scanning probe microscopy (SPM) is a valuable technique by which one can investigate the physical characteristics of the surfaces of materials. However, its throughput is hampered by the time-consuming nature of running an experiment and the significant domain knowledge required. Recent studies have shown the value of multiple forms of automation in improving this, but their use is limited due to the difficulty of integrating them with SPMs other than the one it was developed for. We have built a framework that allows for tasks written with it to be run on multiple SPM systems. Our framework d

Scanning probe microscopy offers a powerful suite of techniques for investigating meso-, micro- and nanoscale phenomena ─ enabling the exploration of advanced materials, heterostructures, quantum materials, as well as providing insight into surface energetics and reactions. Additional spectroscopic capabilities combined with multimodal imaging allow for spatially resolved characterization of functional material properties. Despite its central role, microscopy is still predominantly conducted through a sequential, operator-driven workflow in which data acquisition, interpretation, and subsequen

Scanning probe microscopy is a group of measurements that provides 3D visualization of viruses in different environmental conditions including liquids and air. Besides 3D topography it is possible to measure the properties like mechanical rigidity and stability, adhesion, tendency to crystallization, surface charge, etc. Choosing the right substrate and scanning parameters makes it much easier to obtain reliable data. Rational interpretation of experimental results should take into account possible artifacts, proper filtering and data presentation using specially designed software packages. An

Scanning probe microscopes are now established tools to study the surface structure of biological macromolecules under physiological conditions. Sample preparation methods for this microscopy all have the objective to attach the specimen firmly to a support. Here we analyse the commonly used method of adsorbing biological specimens to freshly cleaved mica. This is facilitated by adjusting the electrolyte concentration and the pH of the buffer solution. Native macromolecular systems absorbed to mica in this way can be reproducibly imaged at submolecular resolution.

The calcareous concretions of human pineal bodies were investigated with scanning electron microscopy and electron probe microanalysis. The initial concretions measuring 5-7 microns in diameter may have started at the calcified pinealocytes. They grew appositionally forming concentric laminations, and then the simple calcospherulites over 20 microns occasionally aggregated with each other. Some of them became numerous spherulite-aggregated concretions. Others individually grew with scallop-shaped concentric laminations at intervals of 0.05-1 microns and became lobated calcospherulites up to 0.

Photocatalytic processes are central to many energy and environmental applications; however, mechanistic understanding of these processes is incomplete. Traditional techniques provide bulk-averaged data, missing crucial activity variations between and within individual photocatalyst particles, which are challenging to probe due to their small size. Scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) and related techniques provide a unique spatially resolved perspective, enabling deeper insights into photocatalyst performance at the microscale and the nanoscale. In this article, we review applications o

At present, the hopping mode of scanning ion conductance microscopy (SICM) is the mainstream method for probing complex sample topography. However, conventional SICM typically relies on built-in electrical sensors for Z-axis feedback control, and the dynamic performance of this feedback path can be limited by sensor bandwidth, readout delay, and system-level disturbances during high-speed scanning. As a result, the probe is more prone to overshoot during rapid approach, which increases the risk of probe-sample collision and restricts imaging speed and stability. To address this problem, an opt

Hard point-contact spectroscopy and scanning probe microscopy/spectroscopy are powerful techniques for investigating materials with strong expandability. To support these studies, tips with various physical and chemical properties are required. To ensure the reproducibility of experimental results, the fabrication of tips should be standardized, and a controllable and convenient system should be set up. Here, a systematic methodology to fabricate various tips is proposed, involving electrochemical etching reactions. The reaction parameters fall into four categories: solution, power supply, imm

Non-contact scanning probe microscopy (SPM) has developed into a powerful technique to image many different properties of samples. The conventional method involves monitoring the amplitude, phase, or frequency of a cantilever oscillating at or near its resonant frequency as it is scanned across the surface of a sample. For high Q factor cantilevers, monitoring the resonant frequency is the preferred method in order to obtain reasonable scan times. This can be done by using a phase-locked-loop (PLL). PLLs can be obtained as commercial integrated circuits, but these do not have the frequency res

Scanning force microscopy allows imaging of biological molecules in their native state in buffer solution. To this end samples have to be fixed to a flat solid support so that they cannot be displaced by the scanning tip. Here we describe a method to achieve the covalent binding of biological samples to glass surfaces. Coverslips were chemically modified with the photoactivatable cross-linker N-5-azido-2-nitrobenzoyloxysuccinimide. Samples are squeezed between derivatized coverslips and then cross-linked to the glass surface by irradiation with ultraviolet light. Such samples can be imaged rep

Electrochemical experiments at individual nanoparticles (NPs) can provide new insights into their structure-activity relationships. By using small nanoelectrodes as tips in a scanning electrochemical microscope (SECM), we recently imaged individual surface-bound 10-50 nm metal NPs. Herein, we introduce a new mode of SECM operation based on tunneling between the tip and a nanoparticle immobilized on the insulating surface. The obtained current vs. distance curves show the transition from the conventional feedback response to electron tunneling between the tip and the NP at separation distances

Electron spin resonance (ESR) is one of the most powerful spectroscopic methods for probing systems with unpaired electronic spins. Conventional ESR has usually relied on the detection of large spin ensembles, thereby averaging over local environments and suppressing microscopic information that is central to surface science, molecular magnetism, and quantum nanoscience. Scanning probe microscopy (SPM) changes this situation. By combining magnetic resonance with the spatial resolution and manipulation capabilities of scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), ESR c

Bimetallic and trimetallic alloys are widely used as catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and other electrocatalytic processes. We employed a scanning electrochemical microscope (SECM) and finite-element simulations to investigate the OER at single FeCo and FeCoNi hydroxide nanoneedles and observed different distributions of catalytic activity on bimetallic and trimetallic particles.

A scanning acoustic microscopy (SAM) system is a common non-destructive instrument which is used to evaluate the material quality in scientific and industrial applications. Technically, the tested sample is immersed in water during the scanning process. Therefore, a robot arm is incorporated into the SAM system to transfer the sample for in-line inspection, which makes the system complex and increases time consumption. The main aim of this study is to develop a novel water probe for the SAM system, that is, a waterstream. During the scanning process, water was supplied using a waterstream inst

We report a real-space imaging of formaldehyde (HCHO) adsorption on a TiO2(110) surface probed by high-resolution scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM). Density functional theory calculations (DFT) were carried out to assign the observed features. The adsorptions occur exclusively on 5-fold coordinated Ti (Ti5c) sites and oxygen vacancies (OVs). The well-resolved configurations on the Ti5c sites feature the overlapping of the two "dumbbell" structures which are originated from the empty orbitals of HCHO. The STM images for the physical adsorption of HCHO on the OV sites appear fuzzy because of
