Simplified feedback control system for scanning tunneling microscopy.

A Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) is one of the most important scanning probe tools available to study and manipulate matter at the nanoscale. In a STM, a tip is scanned on top of a surface with a separation of a few Å. Often, the tunneling current between the tip and the sample is maintained constant by modifying the distance between the tip apex and the surface through a feedback mechanism acting on a piezoelectric transducer. This produces very detailed images of the electronic properties of the surface. The feedback mechanism is nearly always made using a digital processing circuit sep

Plasmon-mediated scanning tunneling microscopy induced luminescence in CdSe/ZnCdS quantum dots.

We report scanning tunneling microscopy-induced luminescence (STML) from CdSe/ZnCdS colloidal quantum dots (QDs) deposited on Au substrates by immersion. Localized electron injection through the tunneling junction enables site-specific optical excitation and photon emission. Light emission from the QDs is observed only when using STM tips that exhibit strong plasmonic emission on the gold surface. Spectral analysis reveals two distinct features: a plasmonic peak at approximately 1.8 eV, which shifts with the applied bias, and an excitonic peak at 1.96 eV, which is bias-independent and consiste

Local Excitation of Kagome Spin Ice Magnetism Seen by Scanning Tunneling Microscopy.

The kagome spin ice can host frustrated magnetic excitations by flipping its local spin. Under an inelastic tunneling condition, the tip in a scanning tunneling microscope can flip the local spin, and we apply this technique to kagome metal HoAgGe with a long-range ordered spin ice ground state. Away from defects, we discover a pair of pronounced dips in the local tunneling spectrum at symmetrical bias voltages with negative intensity values, serving as a striking inelastic tunneling signal. This signal disappears above the spin ice formation temperature and has a dependence on the magnetic fi

Tunneling Mode of Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy: Probing Electrochemical Processes at Single Nanoparticles.

Electrochemical experiments at individual nanoparticles (NPs) can provide new insights into their structure-activity relationships. By using small nanoelectrodes as tips in a scanning electrochemical microscope (SECM), we recently imaged individual surface-bound 10-50 nm metal NPs. Herein, we introduce a new mode of SECM operation based on tunneling between the tip and a nanoparticle immobilized on the insulating surface. The obtained current vs. distance curves show the transition from the conventional feedback response to electron tunneling between the tip and the NP at separation distances

Adsorption and reaction of H2S on Cu(110) studied using scanning tunneling microscopy.

Using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), the adsorption and reaction of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and its fragments (SH and S) on Cu(110) are investigated at 5 K. H2S adsorbs molecularly on the surface on top of a Cu atom. With voltage pulses of STM, it is possible to induce sequential dehydrogenation of H2S to SH and S. We found two kinds of adsorption structures of SH. The short-bridge site is the most stable site for SH, while the long-bridge site is the second. Density functional theory calculations show that the S-H axis is inclined from the surface normal for both species.

Note: Fabrication and characterization of molybdenum tips for scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy.

We present a method for the preparation of bulk molybdenum tips for Scanning Tunneling Microscopy and Spectroscopy and we assess their potential in performing high resolution imaging and local spectroscopy by measurements on different single crystal surfaces in UHV, namely, Au(111), Si(111)-7 × 7, and titanium oxide 2D ordered nanostructures supported on Au(111). The fabrication method is versatile and can be extended to other metals, e.g., cobalt.

Imaging of Guest Molecule Adsorption onto 2D Covalent Organic Frameworks by Scanning Tunneling Microscopy.

Porous materials play an important role in molecular adsorption and separation. However, understanding the mechanisms of molecular adsorption and separation into the pores remains a challenge. Herein, the adsorption of 1,3,5-tris(4-iodophenyl)benzene (TIPB) molecules onto a two-dimensional (2D) covalent organic framework (COF) monolayer is studied by low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (LT-STM) and density functional theory calculations. The COF monolayers are synthesized via the on-surface Ullmann reaction. The COF films have six types of porous morphology with different pore sizes,

Systematic electrochemical etching of various metal tips for tunneling spectroscopy and scanning probe microscopy.

Hard point-contact spectroscopy and scanning probe microscopy/spectroscopy are powerful techniques for investigating materials with strong expandability. To support these studies, tips with various physical and chemical properties are required. To ensure the reproducibility of experimental results, the fabrication of tips should be standardized, and a controllable and convenient system should be set up. Here, a systematic methodology to fabricate various tips is proposed, involving electrochemical etching reactions. The reaction parameters fall into four categories: solution, power supply, imm

Combinatorial laser molecular beam epitaxy system integrated with specialized low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy.

We present a newly developed facility comprising a combinatorial laser molecular beam epitaxy system and an in situ scanning tunneling microscope (STM). This facility aims at accelerating the materials research in a highly efficient way by advanced high-throughput film synthesis techniques and subsequent fast characterization of surface morphology and electronic states. Compared with uniform films deposited by conventional methods, the so-called combinatorial thin films will be beneficial in determining the accurate phase diagrams of different materials due to the improved control of parameter

Scanning tunneling microscopy of ferrocenecarboxylic acid assemblies on Ag(111): a comparison to Au(111).

Scanning tunneling microscopy was used to investigate the arrangement of ferrocenecarboxylic acid (FcCOOH) monolayers on the Ag(111) surface. Four distinct structures were observed, none of which had previously been observed on other surfaces. Structural analysis indicates that these assemblies are primarily composed of dimers. VASP calculations support the molecular assignments of the monolayer structures, while ESI-MS experiments confirm that dimers are the predominant species in solution. Of particular note, the cyclic pentamers and aperiodic packing observed for FcCOOH on Au(111) were not

Atomic-Resolution Imaging of Micron-Sized Samples Realized by High Magnetic Field Scanning Tunneling Microscopy.

Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) can image material surfaces with atomic resolution, making it a useful tool in the areas of physics and materials. Many materials are synthesized at micron size, especially few-layer materials. Limited by their complex structure, very few STMs are capable of directly positioning and imaging a micron-sized sample with atomic resolution. Traditional STMs are designed to study the material behavior induced by temperature variation, while the physical properties induced by magnetic fields are rarely studied. In this paper, we present the design and construction

Dissociation mechanism of 2-propanol on a Si(111)-(7x7) surface studied by scanning tunneling microscopy.

Adsorption of 2-propanol, (CH3)2CHOH, on a Si(111)-7x7 surface was studied by scanning tunneling microscopy. (CH3)2CHOH adsorbs equally on the faulted and unfaulted half unit cells by forming Si-OCH(CH3)2 and Si-H on an adatom and rest atom pair. Si-OCH(CH3)2 is consecutively increased in each half unit cell, and the adsorption is saturated when every half unit cell has three Si-OCH(CH3)2, which corresponds to 0.5 of the adatom coverage. The sticking probability for the dissociation of (CH3)2CHOH is independent of the adatom coverage from 0 to 0.4, but it depends on coverage at higher than 0.4

High-Resolution Mapping of Photocatalytic Activity by Diffusion-Based and Tunneling Modes of Photo-Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy.

Semiconductor nanomaterials and nanostructured interfaces have important technological applications, ranging from fuel production to electrosynthesis. Their photocatalytic activity is known to be highly heterogeneous, both in an ensemble of nanomaterials and within a single entity. Photoelectrochemical imaging techniques are potentially useful for high-resolution mapping of photo(electro)catalytic active sites; however, the nanoscale spatial resolution required for such experiments has not yet been attained. In this article, we report photoreactivity imaging of two-dimensional MoS2 photocataly

Unraveling the Dynamic Processes of Methanol Electrooxidation at Isolated Rhodium Sites by In Situ Electrochemical Scanning Tunneling Microscopy.

Materials with isolated single-atom Rh-N4 sites are emerging as promising and compelling catalysts for methanol electrooxidation. Herein, we carried out an in situ electrochemical scanning tunneling microscopy (ECSTM) investigation of the dynamic processes of methanol absorption and catalytic conversion in the rhodium octaethylporphyrin (RhOEP)-catalyzed methanol oxidation reaction at the molecular scale. The high-contrast RhOEP-CH3OH complex formed by methanol adsorption was visualized distinctly in the STM images. The Rh-C adsorption configuration of methanol on isolated rhodium sites was id

Self-Assembled Two-Dimensional Supramolecular Networks Characterized by Scanning Tunneling Microscopy and Spectroscopy in Air and under Vacuum.

We combine ambient (air) and ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS) investigations together with density functional theory (DFT) calculations to gain a subnanometer insight into the structure and dynamic of two-dimensional (2D) surface-supported molecular networks. The planar tetraferrocene-porphyrin molecules employed in this study undergo spontaneous self-assembly via the formation of hydrogen bonded networks at the gold substrate-solution interface. To mimic liquid phase ambient deposition conditions, film formation was accomplished in UHV by elect

Structural characteristics of the beta-sheet-like human and rat islet amyloid polypeptides as determined by scanning tunneling microscopy.

We demonstrate in this work that scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) provides a useful approach to obtaining structural information about human islet amyloid polypeptide (hIAPP) and rat islet amyloid polypeptide (rIAPP) assembly on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) with sub-molecular resolution. The observed hIAPP and rIAPP lamellae consisted of parallel stripes. The STM images of hIAPPs show multiple molecular folding structures, with an average of 11 amino acid residues for the core regions. In addition, the STM images also reveal the assembly characteristics of rIAPP lamellae and ma

Electronic Signatures of the Multiple Moiré Components in the Two-Dimensional CrCl3/Au Heterostructure Observed by Scanning Tunneling Microscopy and Spectroscopy.

Moiré patterns are a central motif in van der Waals heterostructures arising from the superposition of two-dimensional (2D) incommensurate lattices. These patterns reveal a wealth of correlated effects, influencing electronic, magnetic, and structural phenomena. While diffraction techniques typically resolve multiple moiré wave vectors corresponding to the incommensurate nature of the underlying lattices, Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) often reveals only a dominant superperiod. In this work, we address this apparent discrepancy through an STM study of a twisted monolayer of CrCl3 on Au(11

Adsorption Features of Formaldehyde on TiO2(110) Surface Probed by High-Resolution Scanning Tunnelling Microscopy.

We report a real-space imaging of formaldehyde (HCHO) adsorption on a TiO2(110) surface probed by high-resolution scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM). Density functional theory calculations (DFT) were carried out to assign the observed features. The adsorptions occur exclusively on 5-fold coordinated Ti (Ti5c) sites and oxygen vacancies (OVs). The well-resolved configurations on the Ti5c sites feature the overlapping of the two "dumbbell" structures which are originated from the empty orbitals of HCHO. The STM images for the physical adsorption of HCHO on the OV sites appear fuzzy because of

High-pressure (1 Torr) scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) study of the coadsorption and exchange of CO and NO on the Rh(111) crystal face.

The coadsorption of CO and NO on Rh(111) at room temperature was studied with scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) in the catalytically relevant range of approximately 1 Torr. For gas mixtures where NO is not in large excess, a mixed layer with (2x2) structure is formed. The difference in binding energy between CO and NO on top sites was determined from the measured surface (by direct counting in STM images) and gas mole fractions of each species. A model for the molecular structure is proposed based on the analysis of exchange events between CO and NO molecules in the images. In this model as
