Enterospora nucleophila is a microsporidian enteroparasite that infects mainly the intestine of gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata), leading to an emaciative syndrome. Thus far, the only available information about this infection comes from natural outbreaks in farmed fish. The aim of the present study was to determine whether E. nucleophila could be transmitted horizontally using naturally infected fish as donors, and to establish an experimental in vivo procedure to study this host-parasite model without depending on natural infections. Naïve fish were exposed to the infection by cohabitation

Microsporidia are obligate intracellular protozoan parasites that are becoming increasingly recognized as opportunistic pathogens in patients with AIDS. They have been associated with enteritis, hepatitis, and peritonitis and recently keratoconjunctivitis. Gram stain demonstrates the presence of these organisms on light microscopic sections. The specific diagnostic features that distinguish microsporidia from other small nonspore-forming organisms are best demonstrated by electron microscopy, which is also used to characterize the members of Microsporea. In this study, salient histopathologic …

OBJECTIVE: We compared the level of Enterocytozoon bieneusi infection at different sites within the small intestine among patients with AIDS.
DESIGN: The level of E. bieneusi infection of each patient biopsy was determined and compared using semi-thin plastic section light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM).
PATIENTS, PARTICIPANTS: Nine subjects with chronic diarrhea who had endoscopic biopsies of either proximal (bulb) or distal (fourth portion) duodenum plus proximal jejunum (just past ligament of Treitz), either simultaneously or within a few months of each other were s
