Twelve species of northern Nearctic mosquitoes representing five genera (Aedes, Anopheles, Culex, Culiseta, and Psorphora) were bioassayed for susceptibility to Edhazardia aedis, an exotic, heterosporous, microsporidian parasite of the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti. Infections were achieved in Aedes atropalpus, Aedes triseriatus, and Aedes vexans following oral ingestion of uninucleate spores obtained from patently infected Ae. aegypti larvae. The microsporidium underwent normal vegetative growth and development in each unnatural mosquito host; the only differences observed were in the

Anglerfish from the genus Lophius are a globally important commercial fishery. The microsporidian Spraguea infects the nervous system of these fish resulting in the formation of large, visible parasitic xenomas. Lophius litulon from Japan were investigated to evaluate the intensity and distribution of Spraguea xenomas throughout the nervous system and to assess pathogenicity to the host and possible transmission routes of the parasite. Spraguea infections in L. litulon had a high prevalence; all fish over 403 mm in standard length being infected, with larger fish usually more heavily infected

Enterocytozoon was 1st described in 1985, in an AIDS patient with intestinal malabsorption and diarrhea. Since then, additional cases of infection with this organism have been observed, but only in individuals with AIDS and malabsorption. Intestinal tissue biopsies were obtained from a 45-year-old man prior to AIDS diagnosis, again nine months later and then at autopsy two months later. When the biopsies were examined electron microscopically, both sets contained the microsporidian parasite. However, the 2nd intestinal biopsy, when wasting was much more severe, contained infection in almost ev

A number of animal-associated infections occur in persons infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), including those due to Toxoplasma gondii, Cryptosporidium, Microsporida, Salmonella, Campylo-bacter, Giardia, Rhodococcus equi, Rochalimaea, and Listeria monocytogenes. Most of these infections, with the exception of those due to Rochalimaea, appear to be acquired by the immunosuppressed individual from sources other than exposure to animals. Drs. Glaser and colleagues review our current understanding of the role of exposure to animals, especially pets, in the natural history of thes

This study describes a co-infection of Kudoa islandica (Myxozoa) and Nucleospora cyclopteri (Microsporida) in farmed lumpfish, Cyclopterus lumpus L., in Norway. Several other parasites (Cryptocotyle sp., protozoan ciliates and Gyrodactylus sp.) were also found in gills. In June 2013, the mortality in a farmed lumpfish population increased to 65%. Lumpfish showed erratic swimming behaviour and loss of weight. At necropsy, nodules in the kidney were the only visible lesions. Histologically, all fish showed severe changes with gill inflammation and necrosis in the spleen, kidney and liver. Haemor

It is established, that infestation with Gurleya sp. (Microsporidia, Gurleyidae) changes the behaviour of its host Moina macrocopa (Straus, 1820), a crustacean inhabiting pools. Heavily infested host individuals attach to surface film of water before their death by senescence. As a consequence, their dead bodies filled with spores of the parasite adhere to objects dipped in water that probably facilitates the transfer of spores by birds and cattle to other pools. Weakly infested or uninfested individuals drown after the end of their ontogenesis. Distribution of the microsporidian spores by two

Vavraia lutzomyiae (Microsporida; Pleistophoridae) is a new species parasitic in the tropical phlebotomine sandfly, Lutzomyia longipalpis (Diptera, Psychodidae, Phlebotominae), a major vector of Leishmania chagasi in Latin America where human visceral leishmaniasis is endemic. Infected larvae and pupae were parasitized in the abdomen, and some adults were parasitized in Malpighian tubules and midgut. The sporogonial plasmodium divided by multiple divisions into up to 64 uninucleate sporoblasts. These stages were surrounded outside the plasmalemma by a thick, amorphous dense coat and transforme

Isospora belli, Cyclospora cayetanensis as well as several species of microsporidia are recognized as emerging protozoan pathogens of humans. All are obligate intracellular parasites, with Isospora and the microsporidia being primarily associated with immunocompromised hosts. Cyclospora is a cause of traveller's diarrhoea, and is responsible for water-borne and food-borne outbreaks of disease. Drug treatment is available for these infections. Improved diagnostic methods including the autofluorescence of I. belli and C. cayetanensis oocysts have assisted in the routine detection of these pathog

Weight loss is significant in patients with HIV and chronic diarrhea. The aim of our study was to test for the links between weight loss, the level of food intake, and the severity of diarrhea and nutrient malabsorption. One hundred and sixteen patients with HIV and chronic diarrhea underwent a standardized gastrointestinal and nutritional evaluation, which included a questionnaire on diarrhea, a prospective estimation of food intake, a measurement of blood parameters and fecal lipid and nitrogen outputs, a stool examination for bacteria and parasites, and upper and lower digestive tract endos

Microsporidia are small, intracellular parasites that infect a wide range of hosts, including vertebrates, invertebrates and fish. They were discovered more than a century ago. The first well documented human case, however, was not reported until 100 years later. Since the first case of intestinal microsporidiosis was reported in 1985, numerous cases of microsporidiosis have been reported in immunocompromised patients, especially those in the later stages of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Microsporidia also have been described in various other clinical conditions, including kera

Microsporidia are obligate intracellular protozoal pathogens associated with chronic diarrhea in individuals infected with HIV. Direct detection methods for microsporidial spores in stool include chromotrope-based, fluorochrome, and immunofluorescent stains. The authors compared the ability to detect microsporidial spores in 168 stool specimens using two stains: a chromotrope-based modified trichrome stain and a fluorochrome stain, calcofluor white (Cellufluor, Polysciences, Warrington, PA). In addition to being faster and easier to perform, the calcofluor white stain was found to be more sens

In order to evaluate the capacity of routine histological examination to detect microsporidiosis, a retrospective study was performed on 72 duodenal biopsies from 72 HIV-infected patients with upper abdominal symptoms of unknown cause. Two light microscopic cytological staining techniques, modified trichrome stain and the fluorochrome Calcofluor, were used. Two cases of microsporidiosis were detected among the 20 patients with prolonged diarrhoea of unknown origin in whom no etiological agent had been demonstrated by stool examination, mycobacterial and cytomegalovirus culture of biopsies, and

Microsporidia are ubiquitous, obligate intracellular protozoan parasites increasingly detected as opportunistic pathogens in AIDS patients. These parasites have been associated with chronic diarrhoea, hepatitis, cholangitis, pancreatitis, enteritis, keratoconjunctivitis, and peritonitis in either homosexuals or heterosexuals. Optimum diagnostic and therapeutic measures of these pathogens still elude both clinicians and researchers. Further study is required to elucidate the exact prevalence and clinical characteristics of microsporidia.

Cryptosporidium and Microsporidian play an important part in the diarrhoeic pathology of the immunocompromised patients. The study of 35 cases of cryptosporidiosis and 4 cases of intestinal microsporidiosis diagnosed in the parasitology laboratory of Rabta hospital of Tunis shows that cryptosporidiosis prevalence is 17.24% for AIDS patients, 3.45% for immunocompromised patients VIH (-), and microsporidiosis prevalence is 5.7% for patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. Common points for these two parasitosis are: Clinical syndromes dominated by an acute diarrhea A diagnosis based on

Parasitic protozoa have played a major role in the discovery of the HIV epidemic. It was the occurrence of clustered cases of Pneumocystis pneumonia which caught the attention of the epidemiologists indicating that something unusual was going on. Very recently remarkable progress was made in understanding the epidemiology. Knowledge is evolving that Pneumocystis is host-specific to an extent which seems to justify species rank for the cause of death in AIDS patients for many years. Toxoplasma gondii infections were also recognized very early in AIDS patients. Cerebral toxoplasmosis has now rep

Nucleotide sequence was determined for a portion of genomic DNA which spans the V4 variable region of the small subunit ribosomal RNA gene of an unidentified microsporidium from the cabbage white butterfly, Pieris rapae (174 base pairs). Comparison with equivalent sequence data obtained here for two other microsporidian species, Nosema bombycis (240 base pairs) and Nosema bombi (200 base pairs), and from the GenBank database for 11 other microsporidian species suggests that the unidentified species from P. rapae is most closely related to some Vairimorpha species. Cryptosporidia and microsporidia are emerging parasitic pathogens in immunocompetent and immunocompromised individuals. Cryptosporidium infects several wild and domestic animals that excrete oocysts into the environment and contaminated water represents the major source of infection for humans. Waterborne transmission of Cryptosporidium is a major risk for humans and appropriate measures have to be taken to protect immunocompetent and immunocompromised individuals to become infected. For microsporidia, the sources and ways of transmission are not well documented. Although several animal hosts

Microsporidia are obligate intracellular spore-forming protozoal parasites belonging to the phylum Microspora. Their host range is extensive, including most invertebrates and all classes of vertebrates. More than 100 microsporidial genera and almost 1,000 species have now been identified. Five genera (Enterocytozoon spp., Encephalitozoon spp., Septata spp., Pleistophora sp., and Nosema spp.) and unclassified microsporidia (referred to by the collective term Microsporidium) have been associated with human disease, which appears to manifest primarily in immunocompromised persons. The clinical ma

Few drugs are approved for treating diseases caused by parasites in minor species such as fish. This is due, in part, to the expense of drug development and to the comparatively small market. In vivo effectiveness trials for antiparasitic drugs are costly, time consuming and require ethics approval, therefore an in vitro screening approach is a cost-effective alternative to finding promising drug candidates. We developed an in vitro testing system to test antimicrosporidial compounds against a microsporidian pathogen Heterosporis saurida. Five antiparasitic compounds, albendazole, fumagillin,
