Microsporidia have drastically modified genomes and cytology resulting from their high level of adaptation to intracytoplasmic parasitism. Their origins, which had long remained enigmatic, were placed within the line of Rozella, a primitive endoparasitic chytrid. These origins became more and more refined with the discovery of various parasites morphologically similar to the primitive lines of microsporidia (Metchnikovellids and Chytridiopsids) but which possess fungal-like genomes and functional mitochondria. These various parasites turn out to be distinct missing links between a large assemb

Microsporidia are eukaryotic, spore forming obligate intracellular parasites, first recognized over 100 years ago. Microsporidia are becoming increasingly recognized as infectious pathogens causing intestinal, ocular, sinus, pulmonary, muscular and renal diseases, in both immunocompetent and immunosuppressed patients. Ocular microsporidiosis, though uncommon, could be isolated or part of systemic infections. It occurs mainly in two forms: keratoconjunctivitis form, mostly seen in immunocompromised individuals; stromal keratitis form seen in immunocompetent individuals. Recent reports indicate

A new species of microsporidians, Thelohania jungarica sp. n., was described from larval populations of Odagmia sp. inhabiting the mountain rivers of the northern spurs of Tien-Shan, south-eastern Kazakhstan. The larval infection rate is 3 to 16%. The pupal infection was reported from single individuals. The species in question differs from other members of the genus in the morphology of spores, ecology and host. Sizes of measured 50 spores varied in the following ranges: live ones--5.1-7.6 x 2.5-3.8, fixed and stained--3.8-6.4 x 1.8-3.8 mkm. The parasite causes pathological and morphological

Microsporidia are found worldwide and both vertebrates and invertebrates can serve as hosts for these organisms. While microsporidiosis in humans can occur in both immune competent and immune compromised hosts, it has most often been seen in the immune suppressed population, e.g., patients with advanced HIV infection, patients who have had organ transplantation, those undergoing chemotherapy, or patients using other immune suppressive agents. Infection can be associated with either focal infection in a specific organ (e.g., keratoconjunctivitis, cerebritis, or hepatitis) or with disseminated d

Over the past 20 years, microsporidia have emerged as a cause of infectious diseases in AIDS patients, organ transplant recipients, children, travelers, contact lens wearers and the elderly. Enterocytozoon bieneusi and the Encephalitozoon spp., Encephalitozoon cuniculi, Encephalitozoon hellem and Encephalitozoon intestinalis, are the most frequently identified microsporidia in humans, and are associated with diarrhea and systemic disease. The microsporidia are small, single-celled, obligately intracellular parasites that have been identified in water sources, as well as in wild, domestic and f

Isospora belli, Cyclospora cayetanensis as well as several species of microsporidia are recognized as emerging protozoan pathogens of humans. All are obligate intracellular parasites, with Isospora and the microsporidia being primarily associated with immunocompromised hosts. Cyclospora is a cause of traveller's diarrhoea, and is responsible for water-borne and food-borne outbreaks of disease. Drug treatment is available for these infections. Improved diagnostic methods including the autofluorescence of I. belli and C. cayetanensis oocysts have assisted in the routine detection of these pathog

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to describe the clinical features and management of uveitis associated with microsporidial keratoconjunctivitis (MKC).
METHODS: The medical records of clinically diagnosed or microbiologically proven patients with MKC between July 2016 and August 2021 were reviewed. Patients with documented evidence of keratic precipitates (KPs) or anterior chamber cells were analyzed for their demography, clinical features, and treatment. Patients with microsporidial stromal keratitis and herpes simplex virus keratouveitis were excluded from the study.
RESULTS: Of the 22

Encephalitozoon intestinalis is a species of microsporidia that causes serious health problems, especially in immunocompromised individuals. The drug of choice for treatment today is albendazole. However, partial effects, resistance, and serious side effects are reported. Recently, vinpocetine has become a safe drug that is being investigated for the treatment of various diseases. In this study, the anti-microsporidial efficacies of vinpocetine, albendazole, and vinpocetine- albendazole combination, and how these combinations affected pathogen-induced tissue damage were assessed. In the study,

Microsporidia are obligate intracellular eukaryotic parasites. These pathogens belong to an understudied lineage of fungi and can infect most types of animal. Although microsporidia were first discovered over 150 years ago, their impact on humans and agriculturally important animals has become clear only within the last several decades. Microsporidia have the smallest known eukaryotic genomes, and technological advances have been used to highlight the consequences of genomic reduction. Microsporidia have a unique structure known as the polar tube and the mechanisms of how this infectious appar

Microsporidia are highly diverse, widespread parasites related to fungi and several groups of zoosporic protistan parasites. They infect a broad range of hosts, from protists to vertebrates, in many environments including most, if not all, aquatic habitats. Their genomes range from relatively conventional to highly reduced, yet they share key cellular structures and traits underlying infection and host association. Overall microsporidian diversity, including both 'long-branched' and 'short-branched' lineages, is poorly sampled; their environmental diversity and host range remain therefore larg

INTRODUCTION: Microsporidia are intracellular micro-organisms, characterized by mature spores with chitin walls and by one extrusive polar tube through which they pour their sporoplasm to the host cells. In immunocompromised patients, Enterocytozoon bieneusi and Encephalitozoon intestinalis produce diarrhea and systemic dissemination. In Mexico there is not information about microsporidia in children with cancer.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this pilot study was to investigate the presence of microsporidia species in pediatric patients with leukemia or lymphoma.

In recent years, cases of microsporidial keratoconjunctivitis in China have been increasingly reported. Patients are often misdiagnosed as viral or fungal keratitis before confirmation, leading to prolonged disease course due to inappropriate treatment, and clinical awareness of this disease has long been insufficient. Current diagnosis and treatment face multiple challenges: limited understanding of the biological characteristics of microsporidia and risk factors such as parrot exposure, difficulty in clinical differentiation between keratoconjunctivitis and stromal keratitis types, and the a

Representatives of the genus Anncaliia are known as natural parasites of dipteran and coleopteran insects, amphipod crustaceans, but also humans, primarily with immunodeficiency. Anncaliia algerae-caused fatal myositis is considered as an emergent infectious disease in humans. A. (=Nosema, Brachiola) algerae, the best studied species of the genus, demonstrates the broadest among microsporidia range of natural and experimental hosts, but it has never been propagated in Drosophila. We present ultrastructural analysis of development of A. algerae in visceral muscles and adipocytes of Drosophila m

Microsporidia are a diverse group of obligate, intracellular, eukaryotic, spore-forming parasites. Traditionally, these were considered as protozoans but recently have been reclassified as fungi. Microsporidia behave as opportunistic pathogens causing systemic infections. In the eye, Microsporidia cause keratoconjunctivitis, corneal stromal keratitis, scleritis, and endophthalmitis. This review shares our experiences with anterior segment infections caused by this pathogen. Keratoconjunctivitis is a common form of ocular infection caused by the parasite. Although early reports described it as

Microsporidiosis and cryptosporidiosis are emerging opportunistic infections responsible for intestinal manifestations that are often severe in immunocompromised patients. A case of microsporidiosis-cryptosporidiosis coinfection is reported in an HIV-infected newborn. The patient was a 17-day-old female, exclusively breastfed and with no contact with animals. Microsporidiosis and cryptosporidiosis were diagnosed after systematic screening in stool samples using both specific staining and PCR. Two species of microsporidia, Encephalitozoon intestinalis and Enterocytozoon bieneusi, and Cryptospor

Cryptosporidia and microsporidia are emerging parasitic pathogens in immunocompetent and immunocompromised individuals. Cryptosporidium infects several wild and domestic animals that excrete oocysts into the environment and contaminated water represents the major source of infection for humans. Waterborne transmission of Cryptosporidium is a major risk for humans and appropriate measures have to be taken to protect immunocompetent and immunocompromised individuals to become infected. For microsporidia, the sources and ways of transmission are not well documented. Although several animal hosts
