Morphological and phylogenetic characterization of a new microsporidium, Triwangia gracilipes n. sp. From the freshwater shrimp Caridina gracilipes (Decapoda: Atyidae) in China.

A new microsporidian species was described from the freshwater shrimp Caridina gracilipes collected from Lake Luoma located in Northern Jiangsu province, East China. The infected shrimps appeared generally opaque due to the presence of white cysts located in the connective tissues of the surface of the hepatopancreas. The earliest developmental stages observed were diplokaryotic meronts which were in direct contact with the host cell cytoplasm. Multinucleate sporogonial plasmodia developed into uninucleate sporoblasts which were enclosed in sporophorous vesicles. The parasite developed synchro

Morphological characterization and genetic diversity of a new microsporidium, Neoflabelliforma dubium n. sp. from the adipose tissue of Diaphanosoma dubium (Crustacea: Sididae).

We reported a new microsporidium Neoflabelliforma dubium n. sp. from the adipose tissue of Diaphanosoma dubium in China. The infected daphnids generally appeared opaque due to the presence of numerous spore aggregates located in the adipose tissue. All developmental stages were in direct contact with the host cell cytoplasm. Multinucleate sporogonial plasmodia developed into uninucleate sporoblasts by rosette-like fashion. Mature spores were pyriform and monokaryotic, measuring 4.02 ± 0.24 (3.63-4.53) µm long and 2.27 ± 0.15 (2.12-2.57) µm wide (N = 40). The polaroplast was bipartite with a ti

Proteomic profile of polar filament and polar tube from fungal pathogen microsporidium Nosema bombycis provides new insights into its unique invasion organelle.

Microsporidium is a kind of intracellular fungal pathogen that greatly threatens the human health, breeding industry, and food security. All members of microsporidia possess a unique, highly specialized invasion organelle, described as the polar filament. Like "reversing a finger of gloves", the polar filament discharges out of mature spores to transform as the polar tube, and pathogenic sporoplasm is transported to host cell through polar tube to complete infection. During the invasion process, the structure of polar filament and polar tube has changed, so does the protein composition on them

Human microsporidial infections.

Microsporidia are obligate intracellular spore-forming protozoal parasites belonging to the phylum Microspora. Their host range is extensive, including most invertebrates and all classes of vertebrates. More than 100 microsporidial genera and almost 1,000 species have now been identified. Five genera (Enterocytozoon spp., Encephalitozoon spp., Septata spp., Pleistophora sp., and Nosema spp.) and unclassified microsporidia (referred to by the collective term Microsporidium) have been associated with human disease, which appears to manifest primarily in immunocompromised persons. The clinical ma

Molecular identification of Nucleophaga terricolae sp. nov. (Rozellomycota), and new insights on the origin of the Microsporidia.

Microsporidia are widespread endoparasites of animals, including humans. They are characterized by highly modified morphological and genetic features that cause difficulties in elucidating their enigmatic origin and evolution. Recent advances, however, indicate that the Microsporidia have emerged from the Rozellomycota, forming together either the most basal lineage of the Fungi or its closer relative. The Rozellomycota comprise a huge diversity of uncultured environmental clones, with a very few known species endoparasitic of algae and water moulds, like the chytrid-like Rozella, and of free-

Development, ultrastructure, natural occurrence, and molecular characterization of Liebermania patagonica n. g., n. sp., a microsporidian parasite ot the grasshopper Tristira magellanica (Orthoptera: Tristiridae).

A new microsporidium, Liebermannia patagonica n. gen., n. sp., is described from midgut and gastric caecum epithelial cells of Tristira magellanica, an apterous grasshopper species of southern Patagonia, Argentina. L.patagonica is diplokaryotic, apansporoblastic, homosporous, and polysporoblastic. Transitional (from merogony to sporogony) stages and sporonts of L. patagonica were surrounded by host rough endoplasmic reticulum. The ovocylindrical spores measured 2.9 +/- 0.09 x 1.2 +/- 0.04 microm (fresh, n = 50), and they had an isofilar polar filament of only three coils and a cluster of tubul

[The prevalence of Microsporidium among patients given a diagnosis of cancer].

The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of Microsporidium among patients given a diagnosis of cancer. For this purpose fecal samples from 320 patients aged 23.60+/-23.00 years were examined using native-Lugol and sedimentation methods and evaluated with modified trichrome, trichrome, and calcofluor dyes. Moreover a control group of 320 non-cancer patients was set up. While 10.9% of the patient group was found to have Microsporidium, only 5.6% of the control group did. Comparison between the control and patient groups in terms of presence of Microsporidium revealed a statistically

Microsporidial stromal keratitis successfully treated with medical therapy: a case report.

PURPOSE: To report a case of stromal microsporidiosis that responded to medical treatment with systemic albendazole and topical chlorhexidine. METHODS: A 14-year-old adolescent girl presented with a 3-month history of recurrent redness, pain, and dense anterior stromal corneal infiltrate. Repeated microbiological evaluation helped identify microsporidia from the fifth scraping. Initial therapy with fluoroquinolones failed; 0.02% topical chlorhexidine gluconate hourly and 400 mg of oral albendazole twice daily and later 0.5% loteprednol etabonate were given for a total of 12 weeks. RESULTS: T

Development, ultrastructural pathology, and taxonomic revision of the Microsporidial genus, Pseudoloma and its type species Pseudoloma neurophilia, in skeletal muscle and nervous tissue of experimentally infected zebrafish Danio rerio.

The microsporidium Pseudoloma neurophilia was initially reported to infect the central nervous system of zebrafish causing lordosis and eventually death. Subsequently, muscle tissue infections were also identified. To understand the infection process, development, and ultrastructural pathology of this microsporidium, larval and adult zebrafish were fed P. neurophilia spores. Spores were detected in the larval fish digestive tract 3-h postexposure (PE). By 4.5-d PE, developing parasite stages were identified in muscle tissue. Wet preparations of larvae collected at 8-d PE showed aggregates of s

Human vocal cord infection with the Microsporidium Anncaliia algerae.

We describe a biopsy proven case of microsporidial infection of the false vocal cords in a 69-yr-old male with a history of chronic lymphocytic leukemia. The patient had hoarseness for several weeks before his admission to the hospital for shortness of breath. He had received chemotherapy with fludarabine 6 wk before this hospital admission. A biopsy of vocal cord nodules demonstrated an organism that was identified as Anncaliia algerae by electron microscopy. Molecular analysis of the small subunit RNA gene amplified by polymerase chain reaction further confirmed the identification of this or

Analysis of the beta-tubulin gene and morphological changes of the microsporidium Anncaliia algerae both suggest albendazole sensitivity.

The Microsporidium, Anncaliia algerae, an obligate intracellular parasite, has been identified as an opportunistic human pathogen, but treatment has not been evaluated for infections with this organism. Albendazole, an antitubulin polymerization drug used against parasitic worm infections, has been the medication of choice used to treat some microsporidial infections affecting humans, with varying results ranging from clearing infection (Encephalitozoon) to resistance (Enterocytozoon). This study illustrates the effect of albendazole treatment on A. algerae infection in Rabbit Kidney (RK13) ce
