Epididymal cysts mostly occur in men aged 20-40 years old. Previous reports have covered concerns about postoperative complexes, including postoperative asoedema, hematoma, sustaining pain, and seminal tract obstruction in patients who have undertaken nonmicroscopic epididymal cyst resection or epididymal resection. Nonmicroscopic epididymal cyst surgery is suggested for patients with childbirth plans as a precaution. The treatment of male epididymal cysts via microtechnology is obviously a beneficial option; we took the lead in carrying out microscopic epididymal exploration and cyst resectio

To construct a complex three-dimensional (3D) structure mimicking bone microstructure, hydrogel models of polymerized gelatin methacrylate (pGelMA) were fabricated by using stereolithography and modified with hydroxyapatite (HAp) via an alternate soaking process (ASP) using a solution of calcium and phosphate ions. Fabricated pGelMA line models whose widths were designed as 100, 300, and 600 μm were modified with HAp by ASP by changing the immersion time and number of cycles. After ASP, all of the line models with widths of 100, 300, and 600 μm were successfully modified with HAp, and large am

Developed within the last few decades, microneedles (MNs) have only recently seen wide-scale use among the general population, especially in the area of cosmetics. With the FDA only starting to regulate microneedling devices and the many new microneedling products that enter the modern global market, it is of utmost importance to establish the safety profile and reasonable expectations of the microneedling practice and its products. In our review of current literature, the authors searched the keyword "microneedle" with the following terms: "safety", "side effect", "toxicology", "adverse effec

Using custom made experimental apparatus, the art of electrochemical etching was systematically studied for fabricating micro/nano tungsten probes with controllable tip profiles of exponential, conical, multidiameter, and calabashlike shapes. The characteristic parameters of probe including length, aspect ratio, and tip apex radius could also be well defined. By combining of static and dynamic etching, the conical-shape probe with length up to several millimeters, controllable tip apex radius, and cone angle could be fabricated. In addition, by continuously lifting the tungsten wire up during

Invasion of migrating cells into surrounding tissue plays a key role in cancer metastasis and immune response. In order to assess invasiveness, most in vitro invasion assays measure the degree to which cells migrate between microchambers that provide a chemoattractant gradient across a polymeric membrane with defined pores. However, in real tissue cells experience soft, mechanically deformable microenvironments. Here we introduce RGD-functionalized hydrogel structures that present pressurized clefts for invasive migration of cells between reservoirs maintaining a chemotactic gradient. Using UV

The world is becoming more and more health conscious. Society, health policy and patients' needs are all changing dramatically. The challenges society is currently facing are related to the increase in the aging population, changes in lifestyle, the need for healthcare cost containment and the need for improvement and monitoring of healthcare quality. The emphasis is put on prevention rather than on treatment. In addition, patients and health consumers are waiting for non-invasive or minimally-invasive diagnosis and treatment methods, for home care, short stays in hospital, enhancement of reha

Cartilage degeneration is among the fundamental reasons behind disability and pain across the globe. Numerous approaches have been employed to treat cartilage diseases. Nevertheless, none have shown acceptable outcomes in the long run. In this regard, the convergence of tissue engineering and microfabrication principles can allow developing more advanced microfluidic technologies, thus offering attractive alternatives to current treatments and traditional constructs used in tissue engineering applications. Herein, the current developments involving microfluidic hydrogel-based scaffolds, promis

The wall adhesion of 1 µm microparticles in human blood was studied in circular microchannels. The level of particle wall adhesion was measured for varying levels of shear rate and varying degrees of red blood cell aggregation, which was modulated by the addition of macromolecule dextran 500. The blood preparations were injected into PDMS microfluidic devices that were modified to have circular channels, better matching the geometry of physiological microcirculation compared to square channels or Couette flow systems. The circular walls of the microchannels were embedded with biotinylated phos

Not very far away, "tissue engineering" will become one of the most important branches of medical science for curing many types of diseases. This branch needs the cooperation of a wide range of sciences like medicine, chemistry, cellular biology, and genetic and mechanical engineering. Different parameters affect the final produced tissue, but the most important one is the quality and biocompatibility of the scaffold with the desired tissue which can provide the functionality of "native ECM" as well. The quality of the scaffold is directly dependent on its materials, design, and method of fabr

Conventional skin and blood sampling techniques for disease diagnosis, though effective, are often highly invasive and some even suffer from variations in analysis. With the improvements in molecular detection, the amount of starting sample quantity needed has significantly reduced in some diagnostic procedures, and this has led to an increased interest in microsampling techniques for disease biomarker detection. The miniaturization of sampling platforms driven by microsampling has the potential to shift disease diagnosis and monitoring closer to the point of care. The faster turnaround time f

Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) microfibers were used as a template for development of a capillary-like network in agarose hydrogel. Microfibers with diameter 10-20 μm, which is comparable to the diameter of native capillary vessels, were fabricated using a wet spinning technique. The microfibers were embedded in agarose gel and dissolved by immersing the gel in dichloromethane. The resultant microchannels in the gel had the same diameter as the microfibers, and allowed an aqueous solution to be perfused through the gel. The methodology is promising for fabricating a capillary-like network in

Three-dimensional (3D) microfabrication/nanofabrication technologies have revolutionized various fields by enabling the precise construction of complex microstructures/nanostructures1-6. However, existing methods face challenges in fabricating intricate 3D architectures from a diverse range of materials beyond conventional polymers. Here we introduce a universal 3D microfabrication/nanofabrication strategy compatible with a broad range of materials by precisely manipulating optofluidic interactions within a confined 3D space, enabling the creation of volumetric, free-form 3D microstructures/na

Flexible, microneedle-based electrodes offer an innovative solution for high-quality physiological signal monitoring, reducing the need for complex algorithms and hardware, thus streamlining health assessments, and enabling earlier disease detection. These electrodes are particularly promising for improving patient outcomes by providing more accurate, reliable, and long-term electrophysiological data, but their clinical adoption is hindered by the limited availability of large-scale population testing. This review examines the key advantages of flexible microneedle electrodes, including their

Vaginal infections are extremely prevalent, particularly among women of reproductive age. Although they do not result in high mortality rates, these infections are associated with high levels of anxiety and reduction of quality of life. In most cases, topical treatment of vaginal infections has been shown to be at least as effective as oral treatment, resulting in higher local drug concentrations, with fewer drug interactions and adverse effects. Furthermore, the emergence of microbial resistance to chemotherapeutics and the difficulties in managing infection recurrences sustain the need for m

Electromechanical above-knee prosthetics are widely available, and are reliant on repetitive knee movements of fixed length/angle. This work explores the viability of developing adaptive movements on existing prototypes, through embedded controls from 8051-class 8-bit microcontroller units (MCUs). The system includes an integrated goniometer, intended for measuring the knee angle of the sound limb. The phase delay is subsequently processed to bring about kinematic coordination in the proposed echo-controlled prosthetic.

This chapter reviews the development of fundamental technologies required for microchip-based bioreactors utilizing living mammalian cells and pressure driven flow. The most important factor in the bioreactor is the cell culture. For proper cell culturing, continuous medium supply from a microfluidic channel and appropriate modification of the channel surface to accommodate cell attachment is required. Moreover, the medium flow rate should be chosen carefully, because shear stress affects cell activity. The techniques presented here could be applied to the development of micro bioreactors such

INTRODUCTION: Using artificial means to treat extreme vision impairment has come closer to reality during the past few decades. The goal of this research has been to create an implantable medical device that provides useful vision for those patients who are left with no alternatives. Analogous to the cochlear implants for some forms of hearing loss, these devices could restore useful vision by converting visual information into patterns of electrical stimulation that excite the remaining viable inner retinal neurons in patients with retinitis pigmentosa or age-related macular degeneration.
