In the food industry, there is a growing demand for cost-effective methods for the inline inspection of food items able to non-invasively detect small foreign bodies that may have contaminated the product during the production process. Microwave imaging may be a valid alternative to the existing technologies, thanks to its inherently low-cost and its capability of sensing low-density contaminants. In this paper, a simple microwave imaging system specifically designed to enable the inspection of a large variety of food products is presented. The system consists of two circularly loaded antipoda

A compact and planar imaging system was developed using a flexible polymer substrate that can distinguish subcutaneous tissue abnormalities, such as breast tumors, based on electromagnetic-wave interactions in materials where permittivity variations affect wave reflection. The sensing element is a tuned loop resonator operating in the industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) band at 2.423 GHz, providing a localized high-intensity electric field that penetrates into tissues with sufficient spatial and spectral resolutions. The resonant frequency shifts and magnitudes of the reflection coeffici

In this paper, a microwave microscope is presented for characterization of skin abnormalities. A coplanar waveguide probe is designed and fabricated for high-resolution near-field imaging of the biological samples. Several simulations and measurement studies are described to present the capability of the proposed probe in identification of different tissues and the detection of fat masses at different depths. In addition, two methods are used to eliminate the measurement noise which is caused by non-targeted tissues. Then, the contours around the masses are obtained applying an edge detection

BACKGROUND: MRI is widely used for breast cancer screening for women at a high risk including those with dense breasts. Gadolinium-based contrast agents provide excellent sensitivity for tumor detection; however, some reports suggest that significant health risks may be associated with gadolinium use. Alternative techniques to improve breast MRI specificity that do not reply on gadolinium injection are needed.
PURPOSE: Microwave dielectric properties provide excellent endogenous contrast between malignant and normal breast tissue. While standalone microwave imaging (MI) methods are available,

Microwave medical imaging (MMI) has significant potential for stroke imaging due to its unique portability and timeliness, and is therefore highly valued by researchers. This paper proposes an imaging-process-informed generative strategy (IPIGS) that addresses the challenges posed by nonlinearity in the imaging process, thereby generating more intuitive and diagnosis-friendly microwave medical images. Aiming at the limitations of traditional imaging methods (e.g., distorted Born iterative method, DBIM), namely the blurry imaging background and the confusion of stroke areas, we first attribute

Microwave breast-imaging inversions are often formulated in latent or constitutive parameter spaces that include variables that may not be independently recoverable for a given measurement configuration. This paper presents a recoverability-guided reduced-target inversion framework in which the inverse target is constructed from measurement-supported directions of a noise-weighted local Jacobian. Candidate latent variables are classified as observable, weakly inferable, or strongly confounded. Separable variables are retained, whereas strongly confounded variables are represented by dominant c

In recent years, new microwave-based imaging, sensing and hyperthermia applications have emerged in the field of diagnostics and therapy. For diagnosis, this technology involves the application of low power microwaves, utilising contrast between the relative permittivity of tissues to identify pathologies. This contrast can be further enhanced through the implementation of nanomaterials. For therapy, this technology can be applied in tissues either through hyperthermia, which can help anti-cancer drug tumour penetration or as ablation to destroy malignant tissues. Nanomaterials can absorb elec

van der Waals heterostructures host a wide range of strongly correlated states, but the imaging of quantum phenomena in three-dimensional heterostructures is challenging because multiple layers may contribute to the detected signal. Here we introduce an imaging technique that resolves electronic states on individual atomic planes of a heterostructure, layer by layer, down to milli-Kelvin temperatures. We demonstrate layer-resolved microwave impedance microscopy of quantum Hall states in double-layer graphene, achieved by precisely modulating the vertical transmission of microwaves into the het

Breast cancer remains one of the leading causes of death among women worldwide. One major challenge in early and accurate detection is breast density. High breast density not only obscures tumors on current imaging modalities, making them harder to identify, but also significantly increases the likelihood of diagnostic errors, both by medical professionals and automated detection systems. As a result, accurately classifying the breast density is crucial, and can lead to better, more tailored screening approaches and reduce the chances of error. This is especially critical for younger women, wh

PURPOSE: Microwave radar-based breast imaging technology utilizes the principle of radar, in which radio waves reflect at the interface between target and normal tissues, which have different permittivities. This study aims to investigate the feasibility and safety of a portable microwave breast imaging device in clinical practice.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively collected the imaging data of ten breast cancers in nine women (median age: 66.0 years; range: 37-78 years) who had undergone microwave imaging examination before surgery. All were Japanese and the tumor sizes were from 4 t

We are developing a microwave tomographic system for assessment of overall bone health. We hypothesize that as the mineralization of bone decreases due to the normal aging process and for more extreme situations such as osteoporosis, the dielectric property signature will also vary accordingly. To determine the merits of this approach, we have begun by performing initial exams of the heel to assess the level of image quality achievable. Early experience from our pilot study is encouraging and indicates that multiple planes of 2D images produce good representations of the 3D structural features

The global incidence of lung diseases, particularly lung cancer, is increasing at an alarming rate, underscoring the urgent need for early detection, robust monitoring, and timely intervention. This study presents design aspects of an artificial intelligence (AI)-integrated microwave-based diagnostic tool for the early detection of lung tumors. The proposed method assimilates the prowess of machine learning (ML) tools with microwave imaging (MWI). A microwave unit containing eight antennas in the form of a wearable belt is employed for data collection from the CST body models. The data, collec

BACKGROUND: Microwave imaging has been proposed for medical applications, creating maps related to water content of tissues. Breast imaging has emerged as a key application because the signals can be coupled directly into the breast and experience limited attenuation in fatty tissues. While the literature contains reports of tumor detection with microwave approaches, there is limited exploration of treatment monitoring.
PURPOSE: This study aims to detect treatment-related changes in breast tissue with a low-resolution microwave scanner.
METHODS: Microwave scans of 15 patients undergoing trea

Microwave breast imaging has seen increasing use in clinical investigations in the past decade with over eight systems having being trialled with patients. The majority of systems use radar-based algorithms to reconstruct the image shown to the clinician which requires an estimate of the dielectric properties of the breast to synthetically focus signals to reconstruct the image. Both simulated and experimental studies have shown that, even in simplified scenarios, misestimation of the dielectric properties can impair both the image quality and tumour detection. Many methods have been proposed

Microwave imaging (MI) technology has come a long way to introduce a noninvasive, inexpensive, fast, convenient, and safe screening tool for clinical breast monitoring. However, there is a niche between the existing understanding of MI by engineers versus clinicians. Our manuscript targets that niche and highlights the state of the art in MI technology compared to the existing breast cancer detection modalities (mammography, ultrasound, molecular imaging, and magnetic resonance). The significance of our review article is in consolidation of up-to-date breast clinician views with the practical

Confocal Microwave Imaging (CMI) for the early detection of breast cancer has been under development for over two decades and is currently going through early-phase clinical evaluation. The image reconstruction algorithm is a key signal processing component of any CMI-based breast imaging system and impacts the efficacy of CMI in detecting breast cancer. Several image reconstruction algorithms for CMI have been developed since its inception. These image reconstruction algorithms have been previously evaluated and compared, using both numerical and physical breast models, and healthy volunteer

Breast cancer is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among women worldwide, and the limitations of conventional imaging, especially in women with dense breast tissue have sparked interest in safer, more accessible diagnostic alternatives. Microwave breast imaging (MBI) is a promising, non-ionizing, and potentially cost-effective modality that leverages dielectric contrasts between malignant and healthy tissues. This review presents MBI technologies, focusing on microwave tomography and radar-based techniques such as confocal microwave imaging and tissue-sensing adaptive radar. We evalua

AIM: Microwave endometrial ablation (MEA) is a treatment for dysfunctional uterine bleeding. It is a second generation ablative technique which is as effective as hysteroscopic methods but quicker and easier to perform. Our aim is to describe the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) appearances of the uterus following this procedure.
METHODS: 15 women underwent MRI immediately before MEA, and again at one day and 4 months after treatment. T1 and T2 sequences were performed at 1.0T using a body coil. Images were assessed by 2 independent observers for quantitative and qualitative changes. Clinical

It is important to assess the viability of extremity soft tissues, as this component is often the determinant of the final outcome of fracture treatment. Microwave tomography (MWT) and sensing might be able to provide a fast and mobile assessment of such properties. MWT imaging of extremities possesses a complicated, nonlinear, high dielectric contrast inverse problem of diffraction tomography. There is a high dielectric contrast between bone and soft tissue in the extremities. A contrast between soft tissue abnormalities is less pronounced when compared with the high bone-soft tissue contrast
