OBJECTIVES: In August 2004, a national organ transplant program utilizing the latest policies, procedures, and protocols was begun in Libya. During the first year of the program, 50 kidney transplantations from living donors were performed.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-nine patients (aged 7 to 65 years) received kidneys from living-related donors (aged 19 to 54 years), and 1 husband received a kidney from his wife. Donor selection was based on human leukocyte antigen compatibility. Renal failure was due to chronic glomerulonephritis in most patients, diabetes in 5 adults, systemic lupus eryth

ADRD underdiagnosis among minority populations is well-established and known to be more prevalent among women. Yet, it remains unclear if these patterns exist among adults of Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) descent. We estimated ADRD underdiagnosis among adults of MENA descent and other US- and foreign-born non-Hispanic Whites and compared sex-stratified results. We linked 2000-2017 National Health Interview Survey and 2001-2018 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey data (ages > = 65 years, n = 23,981). Undiagnosed ADRD was suspected if participants reported cognitive limitations without co

BACKGROUND: The Office of Management and Budget's March 2024 Statistical Policy Directive 15 revision requires reporting Middle Eastern or North African (MENA) individuals separately from the White category. This study compares MENA and non-MENA transplant candidates/recipients before the revision to determine whether differences exist between these populations.
METHODS: We analyzed Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN) single-organ kidney, liver, heart, and lung registrations ever-waiting or transplanted between January 1, 2018, and June 30, 2023, filtering to White, non-Hispa

In the recent years, the epidemiology of invasive fungal infections (IFIs) has changed worldwide. This is remarkably noticed with the significant increase in high-risk populations. Although surveillance of such infections is essential, data in the Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) region remain scarce. In this paper, we reviewed the existing data on the epidemiology of different IFIs in the MENA region. Epidemiological surveillance is crucial to guide optimal healthcare practices. This study can help to guide appropriate interventions and to implement antimicrobial stewardship and infect

The current body of literature on the HIV knowledge related to young adult Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) individuals residing in the United States is substantially underdeveloped. As the number of MENA individuals residing in the US continues to rise, there remains a need for research investigating the levels of general HIV knowledge for this unique group. An exploratory cross-sectional design was used for an anonymous online survey of MENA adults ages 18-35 (n = 198) residing in the United States concerning their levels of HIV knowledge. Results showed that less than fifty percent (

People of Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) descent are categorized as non-White in many Western countries but counted as White on the US Census. Yet, it is not clear that MENA people see themselves or are seen by others as White. We examine both sides of this ethnoracial boundary in two experiments. First, we examined how non-MENA White and MENA individuals perceive the racial status of MENA traits (external categorization), and then, how MENA individuals identify themselves (self-identification). We found non-MENA Whites and MENAs consider MENA-related traits-including ancestry, names,

Discrimination is a salient stressor linked with a variety of health outcomes including depression and anxiety among Middle Eastern and North African Americans (MENA). Among other minoritized racial and ethnic groups, sleep difficulties have been identified as potential mechanisms that explain the relationship between discrimination and mental health. However, this has not been explored within MENA samples. Thus, the focus of this study is to examine if two sleep measures (e.g., sleep disturbance and sleep-related impairment) mediate the relationship between discrimination and two mental healt

Middle East and North African (MENA) countries over the decades are experiencing rapid industrial and infrastructural growth combined with being the global hub of oil and gas industries. These economic transformations are associated with release of air pollutants including urban air toxics (UAT) through industrial, traffic, and constructional activities into ambient urban environments. UAT concentrations levels may exacerbate in most MENA countries considering high number of vehicular traffic populations and petrochemical industries which are one of the main sources of this pollutant. Therefor

OBJECTIVES: The health status of Middle Eastern or North African (MENA) populations in Western countries is poorly understood. We assessed whether MENA infants and mothers have a greater risk of adverse pregnancy and birth outcomes than non-MENA infants and mothers in Quebec, Canada.
METHODS: We conducted a population-based observational study of 809 172 infants born to pregnant women in Quebec from 2008 through 2020. We identified infants in the MENA group based on self-reported mother tongue (Arabic or Turkish) and parents' country of birth (North African or Middle Eastern country). We comp

Research examining Arab and Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) health disparities faces several research limitations. These obstacles include unrepresentative national data due to the absence of a MENA identifier on the US Census, and a lack of Arab/MENA American participant trust in surveying bodies. This research hesitancy prompts the need for targeted investigation of the barriers preventing Arab/MENA Americans from participating in health research. Using community- and patient-centered methods, we created and disseminated a patient-facing survey to identify barriers to Arab/MENA Ameri

Health information technology (HIT) use among foreign-born adults of Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) descent living in America is an understudied population. They are currently categorized as "White" in the United States (US) on federal forms. The purpose was to uncover the prevalence of HIT use among MENA immigrants compared to US- and foreign-born White adults before and after adjusting for other factors. The 2011-2018 National Health Interview Survey data (n = 161,613; ages 18 + years) was analyzed. HIT uses evaluated were searching for health information, filling prescriptions, sch

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Modifiable risk factors across the life course play a role in the development of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD). Studies have identified racial and ethnic disparities in ADRD risk factors. Few studies have explored the epidemiology of ADRD risk among Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) Americans, largely due to their classification as White in US national health surveys. Our aim was to estimate ADRD risk factors among MENA immigrants compared to US- and foreign-born non-Hispanic White adults.

Help-seeking attitudes among Arab/Middle Eastern North African (MENA) Americans remain an understudied outcome, despite significant levels of reported mental health concerns. Hierarchical linear regression was used to examine whether Arab/MENA Christians and Muslims' help-seeking attitudes were significantly associated with acculturation, enculturation, and religious orientation. Results indicated that acculturation levels were positively associated with help-seeking attitudes, wherein individuals with higher levels of dominant society immersion were more likely to report more positive attitud

INTRODUCTION: Sex and sexual health practices of Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) youth in Canada are under-researched, even as the community grows rapidly due to high immigration rates. Through a community-based research approach, we examined access to sexual health services among MENA youth living in Ontario, Canada, and identified interventions to strengthen uptake of sexual health services.
METHODS: Fifty-six MENA youth were recruited through purposive and snowball sampling. Participants completed a brief sociodemographic survey and joined subgroups across five sexual and gender id

BACKGROUND: Refugees and immigrants can experience complex stressors from the process of immigration that can have lasting and severe long-term mental health consequences. Experiences after ayahuasca ingestion are shown to produce positive effects on psychological wellbeing and mental health, including anecdotal reports of improved symptoms of trauma and related disorders. However, data on the longitudinal health impact of naturalistic ayahuasca use in Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) immigrant and refugee populations is limited.
AIMS: The current longitudinal online survey study was c
