Moyamoya disease in the midwestern United States.

There have been few investigations of moyamoya disease in the United States and no systematic description of the management practices or outcome from this population. The authors reviewed their experience with this disease to gain a better understanding and improve the treatment of patients with moyamoya disease in the United States. Over a 25-year period 30 patients with moyamoya disease have been treated at the University of Iowa. The cases were divided into patients who had classic, probable, and akin moyamoya disease. Results indicated that there was a bimodal age distribution and a female

Evolution of northeastern and midwestern Borrelia burgdorferi, United States.

The per capita incidence of human Lyme disease in the northeastern United States is more than twice that in the Midwest. However, the prevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacterium that causes Lyme disease, in the tick vector is nearly identical in the 2 regions. The disparity in human Lyme disease incidence may result from a disparity in the human invasiveness of the bacteria in the Northeast and Midwest caused by fundamentally different evolutionary histories. B. burgdorferi populations in the Northeast and Midwest are geographically isolated, enabling evolutionary divergence in human inv

Incidence of Campylobacter enteritis in the midwestern United States.

The incidence of Campylobacter enteritis was assessed in an 800-bed medical center in the midwestern United States. Stool specimens from 203 patients were cultured on a modified Skirrow's selective media and incubated for 48 hours at 42 C in a microaerophilic atmosphere. Campylobacter fetus ssp. jejuni was isolated from 10 patients for an incidence rate of 4.9 percent. All patients were symptomatic. The results suggest that clinical laboratories must establish methods to culture and identify this organism on a routine basis.

Halogenated flame retardants in bobcats from the midwestern United States.

In response to the restrictions of polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) flame retardants in various consumer products, alternative halogenated flame retardants have been subjected to increased use. Compared to aquatic ecosystems, relatively little information is available on the contamination of alternative flame retardants in terrestrial ecosystems, especially with regards to mammalian wildlife. In this study we used a top terrestrial carnivore, the bobcat (Lynx rufus), as a unique biomonitoring species for assessing flame retardant contamination in the Midwestern United States (U.S.) terrest

Prevalence of equine onchocerciasis in southeastern and midwestern United States.

Of 664 horses reported to have originated in southeastern and midwestern United States, 341 (51.4%) were positive for Onchocerca cervicalis cutaneous microfilariasis. The highest prevalence of 68.8% was recorded for horses from Virginia. Horses with the highest concentrations of microfilariae (as high as 19,770 microfilariae/mg in 1 horse) were from the Southeast (Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, and Alabama). For horses from South Carolina, the prevalence of infection was 57.1%; from the Midwest (Kentucky, Illinois, Ohio, and Indiana), 54.4%; from North Carolina, 45.5%; from Pennsylvania, 7.7%; a

Alphacoronaviruses Are Common in Bats in the Upper Midwestern United States.

Bats are a reservoir for coronaviruses (CoVs) that periodically spill over to humans, as evidenced by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) and SARS-CoV-2. A collection of 174 bat samples originating from South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, and Nebraska submitted for rabies virus testing due to human exposure were analyzed using a pan-coronavirus PCR. A previously partially characterized CoV, Eptesicus bat CoV, was identified in 12 (6.9%) samples by nested RT-PCR. Six near-complete genomes were determined. Genetic analysis found a high similarity between all CoV-positive samples,

Novel hepatoviruses in synanthropic bats in the upper Midwestern United States.

A nearly complete genome sequence of hepatovirus G was isolated from an Eptesicus fuscus bat submitted for rabies virus testing due to human exposure in South Dakota. The predicted polyprotein sequence was 78.2% and 74.4% identical to genotypes G1 and G2, respectively, recovered from bats in Ghana. Quantitative PCR on 90 E. fuscus bats showed that eight (8.9%) were positive for hepatovirus G. Targeted sequencing of the VP2 region of the genome for five positive samples showed >99% identity to hepatovirus G strain Ef15893, demonstrating that hepatovirus G commonly circulates in E. fuscus bats i

Human monkeypox infection: a family cluster in the midwestern United States.

BACKGROUND: The outbreak of monkeypox in the Midwestern United States during June 2003 marks the first documented human infection in the Western Hemisphere. Consistent with those in outbreaks in Africa, most cases in this outbreak were associated with febrile rash illness. We describe a cluster of monkeypox in a family with a spectrum of clinical illness, including encephalitis, and outline the laboratory confirmation of monkeypox. METHODS: Standardized patient information was collected by questionnaire and medical chart review; all cases described were laboratory confirmed. Laboratory method

Macrolide Resistance in Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Midwestern United States, 2014 to 2021.

The epidemiology of macrolide resistance in Mycoplasma (Mycoplasmoides) pneumoniae in the United States is incompletely described. Using a PCR assay targeting common mutations associated with macrolide resistance in M. pneumoniae (23S rRNA gene, A2063G/A2064G), the frequency of macrolide resistance was estimated to be 10% based on analysis of 114 samples tested from January 2014 to September 2021 at Mayo Clinic Laboratories. Seasonality data showed the highest rates of M. pneumoniae infection in the fall/early winter.

Trust dynamics among aquaculture producers and regulators in the midwestern United States.

This qualitative study explores the relationship between producers and regulators in aquaculture production in the midwestern United States. We use the trust ecology framework to illustrate both how different dimensions of trust are present among aquaculture producers and how the dimensions of trust might be threatened. This is the first application of the trust ecology framework in aquaculture. Our findings emphasize the importance of building stronger interpersonal relationships between regulatory agencies and aquaculture producers to promote more sustainable growth in the sector. Utilization of Doxycycline Postexposure Prophylaxis at a Midwestern United States HIV/PrEP Clinic.

Appropriate, protocol-adherent, doxycycline postexposure prophylaxis prescribing occurred for 70% of prescriptions from our clinic. Most of the nonadherent prescribing was due to missed sexually transmitted infection screenings (89%). As utilization of doxycycline postexposure prophylaxis continues to increase, it is necessary to ensure appropriate follow-up and monitoring.

Staphylococcus aureus Nasal Carriage among Beefpacking Workers in a Midwestern United States Slaughterhouse.

Occupational contact with livestock is an established risk factor for exposure to livestock-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), particularly among industrial swine workers. While S. aureus is known to infect cattle, livestock-associated S. aureus carriage among workers in the beef production chain has received limited attention. Beefpacking workers, who slaughter, butcher and process cattle, have intensified exposure to potentially infectious animal materials and may be at risk of livestock-associated S. aureus exposure. We conducted a cross-sectional study of beefpa

Exploring Adolescent Abortion Information Sources and Preferences post-Dobbs in the Midwestern United States.

Adolescents face increasing obstacles to abortion services and information. Limited research post-Dobbs suggests that adolescents turn to social media for information, but more research is needed to understand where adolescents expect to find reliable information about abortion and access to care. We conducted in-depth interviews with participants aged 16-19 years from Midwestern states (Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, Iowa, Missouri, Michigan, Ohio, and Minnesota) to explore how they engage with abortion information and which sources they trust and prefer. Interviews were conducted via Zoom bet

By-degree Health and Economic Impacts of Lyme Disease, Eastern and Midwestern United States.

Lyme disease (LD) is the most common vector-borne disease in the United States (U.S.). This paper assesses how climate change may influence LD incidence in the eastern and upper Midwestern U.S. and the associated economic burden. We estimated future Ixodes scapularis habitat suitability and LD incidence with a by-degree approach using variables from an ensemble of multiple climate models. We then applied estimates for present-day and projected habitat suitability for I. scapularis, present-day presence of Borrelia burgdorferi, and projected climatological variables to model reported LD inciden
