The effect of military deployment on mental health.

Public concern about soldiers' mental health has increased over the last decade. Yet the large literature on the mental health problems of returning soldiers relies primarily on self-reported measures that may suffer from non-response bias, usually refers to older conflicts, and focuses mainly on specific diagnoses such as PTSD. Another challenge is that the differences between soldiers and non-soldiers are not necessarily causal, instead possibly reflecting an underlying propensity towards active military service. Using the objective measures of hospitalizations and the purchase of mental hea

Spinal fractures in current military deployments.

OBJECTIVE: To describe spinal fracture patterns presenting to deployed medical facilities during recent military operations. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of the United Kingdom Centre for Defence Imaging Computed Tomography database, 2005-2009. Fractures are classified, mechanism noted and associated injuries recorded. Statistical analysis is by Fisher's Exact test. RESULTS: 128 fractures in 57 casualties are analysed. Ballistic (79%) and non-ballistic mechanisms contribute to vertebral fracture at all regions of the spinal column in patients treated at deployed medical facilities. There i

Military deployment-related respiratory problems: an update.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Military personnel deployed to Southwest Asia and Afghanistan were potentially exposed to high levels of fine particulate matter and other pollutants from multiple sources, including dust storms, burn pit emissions from open-air waste burning, local ambient air pollution, and a range of military service-related activities that can generate airborne exposures. These exposures, individually or in combination, can have adverse respiratory health effects. We review exposures and potential health impacts, providing a framework for evaluation. RECENT FINDINGS: Particulate matter

Gambling problems among military personnel after deployment.

Military and veteran populations may exhibit heightened vulnerability to gambling problems; however, there is scant relevant evidence outside the US, and few studies of transition periods, including return from operational deployment. The aim of this study was thus to highlight the extent, risk-factors, and implications of gambling problems among current members of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) following deployment to the Middle East Area of Operations (MEAO). It involved analyses of data from n = 1324 ADF personnel who deployed between 2010 and 2012, and completed surveys within four mon

[Cutaneous leishmaniasis following military deployment to Iraq].

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a parasitic disease of the tropics and subtropics, transmitted by bites of infected female phlebotonine sandflies. Although CL lesions are normally self-healing they may be disfiguring or potentially disabling, and in field conditions may become secondarily infected; clinical intervention is appropriate in these circumstances. We describe two soldiers normally stationed in British Forces Germany who following deployment to Iraq presented with Leishmania tropica infection. The primary prevention of CL is discussed, together with the epidemiology of the disease, a

Resting-State Correlations of Fatigue Following Military Deployment.

OBJECTIVE: Persistent fatigue is common among military servicemembers returning from deployment, especially those with a history of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). The purpose of this study was to characterize fatigue following deployment using the Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory (MFI), a multidimensional self-report instrument. The study was developed to test the hypothesis that if fatigue involves disrupted effort/reward processing, this should manifest as altered basal ganglia functional connectivity as observed in other amotivational states. METHODS: Twenty-eight current and former

Post-deployment family violence among UK military personnel.

BACKGROUND: Research into violence among military personnel has not differentiated between stranger- and family-directed violence. While military factors (combat exposure and post-deployment mental health problems) are risk factors for general violence, there has been limited research on their impact on violence within the family environment. This study aims to compare the prevalence of family-directed and stranger-directed violence among a deployed sample of UK military personnel and to explore risk factors associated with both family- and stranger-directed violence. METHOD: This study utili

Chronic Left Lower Lobe Pulmonary Infiltrates During Military Deployment.

Deployment to Southwest Asia is associated with increased airborne hazards such as geologic dusts, burn pit smoke, vehicle exhaust, or air pollution. There are numerous ongoing studies to evaluate the potential effects of inhaled particulate matter on reported increases in acute and chronic respiratory symptoms. Providers need to be aware of potential causes of pulmonary disease such as acute eosinophilic pneumonia, asthma, and vocal cord dysfunction that have been associated with deployment. Other pulmonary disorders such as interstitial lung disease are infrequently reported. Not all deploym

Military Mental Health Personnel Deployment Survey: A Secondary Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Military mental health personnel (MMHP) have increasingly engaged in deployment-related roles in closer proximity to combat environments. Although studies examining deployment-related outcomes among military health care personnel have found combat exposure (CE) positively related to psychological problems, no studies of MMHP have investigated CE or its association with psychological outcomes. This study seeks to provide descriptive data on CE and perceived impacts associated with deployment, as well as explore how CE, perceptions of preparedness for deployment, difficulties durin

Supporting Development During Military Deployment and After April 2018.

Ryan is a 6-year-old child new to your primary care practice after relocating from out of state with his father and younger sister. Ryan's grandmother recently expressed concerns about Ryan's social skills and behavior. He was subsequently diagnosed by a developmental and behavioral pediatrician with autism spectrum disorder, global developmental delay, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. At your first visit with Ryan, his father provides the following history: When Ryan was 3 years old, he was living with his mother and infant sister while his father was serving his fourth tour of d

Spousal Military Deployment During Pregnancy and Adverse Birth Outcomes.

Pregnant women with a military-deployed spouse have increased risk of depression and self-reported stress. In nonmilitary populations, depression and stress during pregnancy are associated with adverse birth outcomes. This study assesses the association between a spouse's military deployment and adverse birth outcomes. We conducted a retrospective cohort study at a large military medicine center in the Northwest and evaluated records of singleton deliveries to dependent Army spouses from September 2001 to September 2011. We used logistic regression to estimate relative risks and 95% confidence

Follow-up Survey Response in Relation to Military Deployments.

INTRODUCTION: The longitudinal study of service members is necessary to assess the unique occupational exposures and experiences that may affect long-term health and well-being. However, certain inherent aspects of military service, such as military deployments, may make repeated follow-up survey assessments for collecting ongoing exposures, health symptoms, and health outcomes challenging. The aim of this study was to understand the impact of deployment on follow-up survey response rates across a 3-year period among eligible participants in a large contemporary military cohort. Relationship to Deployment on Sarcoidosis Staging and Severity in Military Personnel.

INTRODUCTION: Ongoing studies are investigating the potential link between deployment to Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom and relationship to increases in pulmonary disease. While increases in certain diseases such as asthma and airway hyperreactivity are well established, data on other chronic pulmonary diseases such as sarcoidosis have not been defined. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted of all active duty military personnel diagnosed with sarcoidosis from 2005 to 2010. Deployment dates and locations were obtained through the Armed Forces

Predicting mental health problems in military personnel following deployment: The Military Mental Health Risk Screen.

Many military service members experience posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other mental health conditions following deployment; however, current methods for screening and identifying those at risk for developing mental health disorders are insufficient. The present study used archival, prospectively collected longitudinal data on risk factors to create a brief screening measure that could be used to proactively identify those most likely to develop longer-term PTSD and other mental health symptoms following deployment. Data were available for 512 military personnel, and the sample was r

Violent behaviour in U.K. military personnel returning home after deployment.

BACKGROUND: There is growing concern about an alleged rise in violent behaviour amongst military personnel returning from deployment to Iraq and Afghanistan. The aims of this study were to determine the prevalence of violence in a sample of U.K. military personnel following homecoming from deployment in Iraq and to examine the impact of deployment-related experiences, such as combat trauma, on violence, and the role of sociodemographics and pre-enlistment antisocial behaviour. METHOD: This study used baseline data from a cohort study of a large randomly selected sample of U.K. Armed Forces pe

Study of Active Duty Military Personnel for Environmental Deployment Exposures: Pre- and Post-Deployment Spirometry (STAMPEDE II).

BACKGROUND: There is significant concern about the respiratory health of deployed military service members given the reported airborne hazards in southwest Asia, which range from geologic dusts, burn pit emissions, chemical exposures, and increased rates of smoking. There has been no previous comparison of pre- and post-deployment lung function in these individuals. METHODS: Military personnel who deployed to southwest Asia in support of ongoing military operations were recruited from the Soldier Readiness Processing Center at Fort Hood, Texas, from 2011 to 2014.
