Obesity and the US military family.

OBJECTIVE: This review discusses the current knowledge and future directions regarding obesity within the US military family (i.e., active-duty servicemembers, as well as military spouses, children, retirees, and veterans). The increasing rates of overweight and obesity within the US military adversely impact military readiness, limit recruitment, and place a significant financial burden on the Department of Defense. DESIGN AND METHODS: The following topics are reviewed: 1) The prevalence of and the financial, physical, and psychological costs associated with overweight in military communitie

Rickettsia Felis Case Cluster in a Military Family.

Cases of flea-borne spotted fever (FBSF) have been on a steady increase in the southern United States and produce the highest numbers of reported vector-borne disease cases in Texas. Historically, cases were largely murine typhus caused by Rickettsia typhi and characterized by exposure to rodent fleas. However, more recently, spotted fever rickettsiosis caused by R. felis and characterized by exposure to the cat flea, Ctenocephalides felis, may be the dominant disease. We describe the management of a child with a complex clinical picture, including sickle cell β-thalassemia, bullous pemphigoid

Post-deployment family violence among UK military personnel.

BACKGROUND: Research into violence among military personnel has not differentiated between stranger- and family-directed violence. While military factors (combat exposure and post-deployment mental health problems) are risk factors for general violence, there has been limited research on their impact on violence within the family environment. This study aims to compare the prevalence of family-directed and stranger-directed violence among a deployed sample of UK military personnel and to explore risk factors associated with both family- and stranger-directed violence. METHOD: This study utili

Family violence in the military: a review of the literature.

Foot ulceration is a prominent cause of diabetes mellitus morbidity and mortality in developing countries. This is an observational study in which 47 consecutive diabetes mellitus patients with foot ulcers were studied over a 2-year period. Each patient's medical history, physical examination findings, and hematological and radiological features were documented. The mean age of the patients was 56 (11) years. The majority of the patients (40, 85%) had type 2 diabetes mellitus; 25% of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus were diagnosed when they presented with foot ulceration. Grades 2 and 3

Easing Licensure Barriers for Military Families.

The frequent moves necessitated by uniformed service pose employment and lifestyle challenges for military families. These economic pressures are exacerbated when military spouses require state-based licenses or certificates to practice their chosen profession. Although all states have taken some action to facilitate licensure transfers based on military moves, the imperatives of national security implicated by military recruiting and retention demand a more comprehensive solution to employment barriers facing military households. Recent legal developments at the federal level create opportuni

Child abuse and neglect in military and civilian families.

Patterns and correlates of child maltreatment were investigated both within the military and between military and civilian families. The results revealed that certain patterns and correlates emerged within the military that were significant. For example, loss of control and lack of tolerance were two major reasons given for abuse by military perpetrators . Also the stresses of family discord, new baby and continuous child care along with relocation and isolation played important roles in the occurrence of abuse within the military. When comparisons were made between military and civilian famil

Case report: Possible psittacosis in a military family member-clinical and public health management issues in military settings.

Chlamydia psittaci infection among humans (psittacosis) and pet birds (avian chlamydiosis), also known as parrot disease, parrot fever, and ornithosis, is a zoonotic bacterial disease. Humans most often become infected by inhaling the organism when urine, respiratory secretions, or dried feces of infected birds are dispersed in the air as very fine droplets or dust particles. C. psittaci infection of humans can cause influenza-like symptoms, such as fever of abrupt onset, pronounced headache, and dry cough, and can lead to severe pneumonia and non-respiratory health problems. Infection can als

How wartime military service affects children and families.

How are children's lives altered when a parent goes off to war? What aspects of combat deployment are most likely to put children at risk for psychological and other problems, and what resources for resilience can they tap to overcome such hardships and thrive? To answer these questions, Patricia Lester and Lieutenant Colonel Eric Flake first examine the deployment cycle, a multistage process that begins with a period of anxious preparation after a family receives notice that a parent will be sent into combat. Perhaps surprisingly, for many families, they write, the most stressful part of the

Impact of Family Planning Decisions Among Women in the U.S. Military.

INTRODUCTION: As of 2022, 17.5% of active duty service members are female, a population vulnerable to delayed family building because of deployments, geographic relocations, occupational hazards, and career progression demands. Despite increasing access to leadership roles, systemic support for reproductive planning remains inconsistent. The objective of this study was to evaluate how fertility planning affects career progression and retention among active duty military women. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From June 2020 to December 2023, we conducted an IRB-approved, cross-sectional, anonymous surv

Evaluation of Community Reinforcement and Family Therapy in the UK military community.

Background: Partners and family can play a key role in encouraging military service and ex-service personnel to seek help for their mental health. Community Reinforcement Approach and Family Training (CRAFT) was developed to equip concerned significant others (CSOs) of those experiencing substance use disorders with skills to encourage their loved one to enter treatment and improve their own well-being. It was adapted in the US for CSOs of ex-service personnel with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) (VA-CRAFT).Objective: This study aimed to evaluate an adaptation of VA-CRAFT for use with CS

Family perceptions of post-deployment healthcare needs of Iraq/Afghanistan military personnel.

Nearly 40 000 service members returning from Iraq and Afghanistan have suffered traumatic injuries, with over 300 000 at risk for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or other psychiatric problems. These veterans face numerous post-deployment health concerns, sharing substantial burdens with their families. Although many rely upon community-based health care, little is known about how these individuals present at family medicine clinics for perceived medical and psychological issues. We surveyed 347 patients during visits at six clinics, and respondents reported whether they,a family member o

Exploring the Lived Experiences of Pain in Military Families: A Qualitative Examination.

Chronic pain in Canadian Veterans is twice that of the general population and the prevalence of their related mental health concerns is alarmingly high. This likely puts their children at an increased risk of developing pain and mental health problems that can pervasively impact daily life and persist into adulthood. Pain care and military culture of (acute and chronic) pain have been identified as a top priority of Canadian Veterans. This study aimed to gain an in-depth understanding of the pain experiences of Canadian Armed Forces families. Thirty-five semi-structured qualitative interviews

[A day for families of military patients with post-traumatic stress disorder].

The treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder is one of the priorities of the armed forces' health service, but there are few measures for families, who are nevertheless the first to be affected. At the Robert-Picqué army training hospital in Bordeaux, an information and exchange day for carers was set up in 2018. It takes place once every term. Here is a look at how it works, its benefits and its limitations.

Impact of deployment on military families with young children: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: More than 40% of children in military families are <6 years old, a period when children are most dependent on their parents' physical and emotional availability. PURPOSE: This systematic review describes the impact of deployment since 9/11 on the mental health of military families with young children, evaluates evidence-based interventions for military parents with young children, and identifies gaps in the science limiting our ability to support the needs of these families. METHODS: Databases were reviewed from 2001 to 2014 using preferred reporting items for systematic reviews

Longitudinal predictors of children's self-blame appraisals among military families reported for family violence.

BACKGROUND: Although children's self-blame appraisals are recognized as important sequelae of child victimization that contribute to subsequent adjustment problems, little is known about the factors that predict their development and longitudinal course. OBJECTIVE: The current study examines the stability and longitudinal predictors of children's self-blame appraisals among a sample of children reported for family violence. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Children (N = 195; 63 % female) aged 7 to 17 years (Mage = 12.17) were recruited as part of a longitudinal assessment of families referred to th

Military Couples' Patterns of Family Work: Associations With Demographic Characteristics and Relational Functioning.

Although research documents the demands of military life and the influence these demands can have on family life, little is known about military couples' patterns of family work and how these patterns are associated with their relational functioning. Grounded in the vulnerability stress adaptation model, this study addressed this gap by using a latent profile analysis with dyadic data from 228 United States military couples to identify groupings of couples with distinct patterns of family work, specifically, both partners' parenting work and emotion work. Four profiles emerged. They were disti
