Transitioning from military medics to registered nurses.

The nursing shortage in the USA is expected to reach 260,000 registered nurses (RNs) by 2025. The most profound shortages are expected in California and Florida, translating into 109,779 and 128,364 RN jobs, respectively. Despite a foreseen growth in nursing career opportunities nationwide, the supply of nurses will be insufficient to meet the corresponding demand. Capitalizing on prior education, experience, and skills of military clinical personnel to fill these jobs could significantly reduce the projected nursing shortage. Canadian Military Nurse Deaths in the First World War.

This paper examines the lives of sixty-one Canadian Nursing Sisters who served during the First World War, and whose deaths were attributed, more or less equally, to three categories: general illness, Spanish Influenza, and killed in action. The response by Canadian Army Medical Corps (CAMC) physicians to the loss of these early female officers who were, in fact, Canada's first female war casualties, suggests a gendered construction of illness at work in the CAMC. While nurses tried to prove themselves good soldiers, military physicians were quick to attribute their illnesses and deaths to hor

TRAINING PROGRAM FOR NURSING STAFF REGARDING VIRAL HEMORRHAGIC FEVERS IN A MILITARY HOSPITAL.

Viral hemorrhagic fevers (VHFs) refer to a group of illnesses caused by several distinct families of viruses. In general, the term "viral hemorrhagic fever" is used to describe a severe multisystem syndrome (multisystem in that multiple organ systems in the bpdy are affected). Characteristically, the overall vascular system is damaged, and the body's ability to regulate itself is impaired. These symptoms are often accompanied by hemorrhage (bleeding); however, the bleeding is it rarely life-threatening. While some types of hemorrhagic fever viruses can cause relatively mild illnesses, many of

An Exploration of Early Nurse Writings by Walt Whitman and Susie King Taylor: Beacons of Valor, Compassion, and Service for Contemporary Military Nurses.

Since the American Revolution, early nurse writers have played crucial roles in shaping the nursing profession. Their pioneering roles and writings prioritized patient advocacy through the formal elevation of nurse voices, which called for improvements in patient care through the implementation of practice standards and policy. During the American Civil War, Walt Whitman and Susie King Taylor wrote about tending to injured soldiers: dressing their wounds, honoring their service, and even witnessing their deaths. Due to time, distance, and historical constraints, Whitman and Taylor were not mem

"Doing the right thing": Moral conflicts and ethical issues experienced by military nurses during wartime.

INTRODUCTION: The War on Terrorism, which included Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) in Afghanistan from 2001 to 2014 and the concurrent Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) from 2003 to 2011, exposed military nurses to situations and challenges for which many reported feeling unprepared. Clinically, nurses faced multi-trauma injuries and devastating wounds suffered by military troops and civilians alike. Cultural issues and harsh living conditions added further complications to the care environment. The purpose of this study was to address the research question: How do military nurses identify, asses

Sociodemographic factors and career growth as determinants of staff retention among nurses in a military hospital in Saudi Arabia.

Nurses are the backbone of healthcare systems, and their retention remains a critical global challenge, as high attrition leads to a loss of expertise, continuity of care, and patient trust. The main objective of this study is to examine whether sociodemographic factors and career growth act as determinants of staff retention among nurses working in a military hospital in Saudi Arabia. A cross-sectional analytic study was conducted among nurses employed at an Armed Forces Hospital in Saudi Arabia over a 3-month period between June and August 2025. Data were collected using an online self-admin

A QuEST for Nursing Clinical Activity Exposure: Comparison of the Military Treatment Facility and a Civilian Level I Trauma Center.

INTRODUCTION: Most military nurses work day-to-day in Military Treatment Facilities (MTFs), caring for a low volume of non-trauma patients until tasked to deploy. Military-civilian partnerships (MCPs) were established to increase opportunities for trauma exposure and high acuity patient care that are often lacking at MTFs but are essential for deployment readiness. In a near-peer conflict, deployed medical teams can expect to hold patients for days before evacuation and must be proficient in prolonged casualty care. Current Air Force nurse readiness checklists do not quantify expeditionary ski

Strategic Principles and Historical Lessons Learned: The Angels of Bataan and Corregidor Case Study as an Example for Contemporary Military Nurses.

Whether a large urban trauma center facing varied healthcare crises, an understaffed hospital during a pandemic, or a remote and austere setting in a combat zone during active war, the lines between United States (US) military nurses serving in civilian or military settings continue to blur. Health care systems across America face uncharted challenges, including imminent closure related to financial factors, threats of future pandemics with equal or worse devastation than COVID-19, and outbreaks of war across the globe that require the specialty skills of medical professionals working in the U

How much is enough? Using Delphi to explore the clinical-contact-time and return-to-practice needs of military nurses.

Aim Military nurses are required to deploy worldwide at any time to support British forces. They must maintain military and clinical skills, and fulfil other military commitments as required. These diverse responsibilities make it challenging for military nurses to maintain the level of clinical expertise they require for short-notice deployments. A service evaluation was conducted to investigate issues related to clinical contact time (CCT) and to return to practice (RTP) for military nurses. Method A consultative approach was taken in the form of a modified Delphi study, followed by a milita
