Islamic lifesaving human milk donation model for small and sick preterm: Policy development.

BACKGROUND: Premature birth predisposes preterm infants to life-threatening complications. Donor human milk is as effective as a mother's own milk when mothers cannot produce enough milk. In Islam, receiving donor human milk creates a milk kinship that imposes religious restrictions. Therefore, Muslim countries have made limited efforts to develop human milk donation policies that meet international standards and Islamic regulations. PURPOSE: To develop a health policy model about human milk donation for small and sick preterm infants in neonatal intensive care units in Jordan based on the CD

"Milk makes me sick but my body needs it": conflict and contradiction in the establishment of authoritative knowledge.

This article takes lactose intolerance as a topic for exploring clashes of power, authority, and knowledge in clinical interactions and interpretations of laywomen. In clinics providing maternal and child care, staff and clients jointly produced authoritative knowledge, most often a version of biomedicine. The Euroamerican staff tended to give advice that was biologically appropriate for them but not for many of their patients, a process reflecting what we refer to as biocentrism. Resulting information given to pregnant and lactating women and diagnoses of children's growth patterns were inapp

[The Changing Value of Mother's Milk. Feeding Premature and Sick Newborns Since the Late 19th Century].

In the 1960s/early 70s there was a widespread conviction in West Germany that mother's milk was no longer essential even for premature infants given the availability of improved industrial milk products. But today the superiority of human milk is again undisputed, and progress in neonatology has created a growing target group of extremely premature infants who show clear benefits from being fed with human milk, particularly regarding improved outcomes. Currently there is a revival of donor milk banks (FMB). Globally there are around 500, 15 in Germany. Until the 1960s, mother's milk was the pr

Drinking milk or water has no effect on the severity of optokinetic rotation-induced symptoms of motion sickness.

BACKGROUND: The present study investigated the effects of drinking milk or water before viewing an optokinetic rotation drum on the severity of motion sickness and abnormal gastric myoelectric activity. METHODS: There were 27 subjects who drank 300 ml of milk or water, or drank nothing, in three separate sessions with 2-d intervals between every two sessions. Subjects in each session then viewed a vertically striped optokinetic rotation drum for 16 min. Symptoms of motion sickness and electrogastrograms (EGGs) were measured. RESULTS: Subjects reported no significant difference in symptoms of

Optokinetic rotation-induced taste aversions correlate with over-all symptoms of motion sickness in humans.

51 subjects were divided into Familiar- and Unfamiliar-drink groups based on whether they had tasted soybean milk before the experiment. Each subject then viewed an optokinetic rotating drum for 10 min. Subjective assessments of nausea and over-all symptoms of motion sickness were measured during the drum rotation. Two hours later subjects drank the soybean milk again. The consumed volume and rating of likeableness of the drink were subsequently measured. Analysis showed that the subjects in the Unfamiliar-drink group reported significantly higher taste aversion and consumed significantly less

A decision-tree model to detect post-calving diseases based on rumination, activity, milk yield, BW and voluntary visits to the milking robot.

Early detection of post-calving health problems is critical for dairy operations. Separating sick cows from the herd is important, especially in robotic-milking dairy farms, where searching for a sick cow can disturb the other cows' routine. The objectives of this study were to develop and apply a behaviour- and performance-based health-detection model to post-calving cows in a robotic-milking dairy farm, with the aim of detecting sick cows based on available commercial sensors. The study was conducted in an Israeli robotic-milking dairy farm with 250 Israeli-Holstein cows. All cows were equip

Towards practical application of sensors for monitoring animal health: the effect of post-calving health problems on rumination duration, activity and milk yield.

Three sources of sensory data: cow's individual rumination duration, activity and milk yield were evaluated as possible indicators for clinical diagnosis, focusing on post-calving health problems such as ketosis and metritis. Data were collected from a computerised dairy-management system on a commercial dairy farm with Israeli Holstein cows. In the analysis, 300 healthy and 403 sick multiparous cows were studied during the first 3 weeks after calving. A mixed model with repeated measurements was used to compare healthy cows with sick cows. In the period from 5 d before diagnosis and treatment

[51Cr]EDTA intestinal permeability in children with cow's milk intolerance.

Making use of [51Cr]EDTA as a permeability marker, we measured intestinal permeability in a group of 20 children with proven cow's milk intolerance (CMI), a group of 17 children with similar complaints where CMI was excluded (sick controls), and a group of 12 control children. [51Cr]EDTA test results (mean +/- SD) were 6.85 +/- 3.64%, 3.42 +/- 0.94%, and 2.61 +/- 0.67% in the group with CMI, the sick control, and the control group, respectively. When compared to both control groups, patients with cow's milk intolerance (CMI) showed a significantly increased small bowel permeability. We conclud

Using activity and milk yield as predictors of fresh cow disorders.

The objective was to determine whether daily walking activity and milk yields could be used as predictors of metabolic and digestive disorders early in lactation. Data were collected from 1996 through 1999 from 1445 dairy cows in 3 Florida herds. Walking activity, milk yield, and other measures were collected from a computerized dairy management system. Mixed models analysis was used for data on cows before their first detected estrus, as identified by difference in activity. Healthy cows were defined as those without any metabolic or digestive disorder during the prebreeding stage, whereas a

Effect of prebiotic supplementation with stabilized rice bran in milk of pre-weaned organic Holstein calves.

BACKGROUND: The first month of life possess significant challenges for dairy calves due to high susceptibility to digestive diseases. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of prebiotic supplementation with stabilized rice bran (SRB) in milk on health, immunity, and performance of pre-weaned organic dairy calves. Holstein heifer calves (n = 90) were enrolled at 6 ± 1 days old and monitored for 28 days, from July to August 2017. Calves were randomly assigned to a control (CTR; n = 45) or a treatment group (SRB; n = 45). The CTR group received milk alone and the SRB group receive

Epidemiology of Milk-Borne Diseases.

Secular trends in milk-borne diseases in the U.S.A. show numerous outbreaks associated with ingestion of raw milk in the early 1900s until the end of World War II. Diseases common in this period, but no longer milk-borne, were typhoid fever, scarlet fever, septic sore throat, diphtheria, tuberculosis, shigellosis, and milk sickness. Milk-borne and milk-product-borne diseases rarely reported somewhere in the world were botulism, Escherichia coli enteritis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa enteritis, listeriosis, Clostridium perfringens enteritis, Bacillus cereus gastroenteritis, Haverhill fever, Q fever,

Improving donor human milk collection in a hospital without a human milk bank: a quality improvement initiative at an urban tertiary-care teaching hospital.

Feed intolerance and necrotising enterocolitis (NEC) are challenges while treating sick neonates. These can be reduced by giving human milk, but adequate availability of mother's own milk or pasteurised donor human milk (PDHM) is a challenge in neonatal setups, like ours, without an attached human milk bank. Hence, this quality improvement initiative was taken to improve donor human milk collection in our urban tertiary-care teaching hospital, to at least 500 mL per week in 4 weeks. After analysing the problem, our quality improvement team identified a shortage of human milk donation that was

Macronutrient Composition of Donated Human Milk in a New Zealand Population.

BACKGROUND: A primary role of human donor milk banks is to provide pasteurized human milk for the sick and preterm infant populations and to support the mothers of these infants as they establish their own milk supply. The results of human milk pasteurization continue to be studied to provide information that enables optimal nutrition in this sick and preterm population. RESEARCH AIMS: The aims of our study were to determine macronutrient characteristics (fat, protein, carbohydrate) and energy content of human milk donated to the Christchurch Women's Hospital Human Milk Bank in New Zealand, a

Cow's milk protein intolerance in infants under 1 year of age: a prospective epidemiological study.

Incidence and clinical manifestation of cow's milk protein intolerance (CMPI) were studied in 1158 unselected newborn infants followed prospectively from birth to 1 year of age. No food changes were required in 914 infants who were used as healthy controls. When CMPI was suspected (211 infants), diagnostic dietary interventions according to a standard protocol were performed. After exclusion of lactose intolerance, two positive cow's milk elimination/challenge tests were considered diagnostic of CMPI. Two hundred and eleven symptomatic infants were examined for possible CMPI. A large group of

Nursing sickness in the mink--a metabolic mystery or a familiar foe?

Nursing sickness, the largest single cause of mortality in adult female mink (Mustela vison), is an example of a metabolic disorder, which develops when the demands for lactation require extensive mobilization of body energy reserves. The condition is characterized by progressive weight loss, emaciation, and dehydration with high concentrations of glucose and insulin in the blood. Morbidity due to nursing sickness can be as high as 15% with mortality around 8%, but the incidence is known to vary from year to year. Stress has been shown to trigger the onset of the disease and old females and fe

Evaluation of infrared thermography compared to rectal temperature to identify illness in early postpartum dairy cows.

This study evaluated and compared infrared thermography (IRT) and rectal temperature (RT) as screening tests to identify sick transition dairy cows. Holstein cows (n = 72; 42 primiparous) had RT and IRT temperatures taken daily from 1 to 12 days in milk (DIM). Health examinations were performed daily to diagnose retained fetal membrane, milk fever and metritis, and blood was analyzed for β-hydroxybutyrate at 6 and 9 DIM to diagnose ketosis. Plasma concentrations of cortisol, interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor α and serum amyloid A at 3, 6, 9 and 12 DIM were included as additional indicators
