Gastroprotective bio-guiding study of fruits from Mimusops balata.

Mimusops spp. is used as plant-based antiulcer drugs in Indian traditional medicine. In this study, a bio-guiding study of methanolic extracts of Mimusops balata edible fruits was performed to identify an antiulcer gastric compound. The gastric lesions induced by HCl/ethanol in mice were significantly improved by methanolic extract from seed (MESe, 300 mg/kg), but not by methanolic extract from peel (MEPe, 300 mg/kg) or pulp (MEPu, 300 mg/kg), when compared to the vehicle group. Treatment with MESe also decreased gastric ulceration induced by indomethacin. The antiulcerogenic activity of MESe

Hypotensive effect of the methanolic extract of Mimusops elengi in normotensive rats.

The methanolic extract of Mimusops elengi caused hypotensive activity in anaesthetized rats. On intravenous administration (i.v.) at a dose range of 2-16 mg/kg, it produced about a 7-38% fall in mean arterial blood pressure, in a dose-dependent manner. The effect was independent of adrenergic, muscarinic and histaminergic receptors. The hypotension was also unchanged after autonomic ganglion or angiotensin-converting-enzyme blockade. Administration of calcium channel blockers, however, including nifedipine (0.9 mg/kg) and verapamil (3.9 mg/kg), caused corresponding reductions of 81 and 64% in

Cytotoxicity of Mimusops caffra-Based Ursolic Acid, Oleanolic Acid and Derivatives Against Human Cancerous and Non-Cancerous Cell Lines.

According to the World Health Organization, cancer is still the leading cause of death for humans worldwide. Although over 100 chemotherapeutic agents are currently available for the treatment of cancer patients, the overall long term clinical benefit is disappointing due to the lack of effectiveness or severe side effects from these drugs. The use of complementary and alternative medicinal products from plants has continued to increase in past decades, due to fewer side effects of bioactive compounds from medicinal plants of which pentacyclic triterpenoids have been identified as one class of

Evaluating urban tree species for cyclone-prone and polluted environments: evidence from Bhubaneswar Smart City, Odisha.

Urban forests play a vital role in sustainable cities by providing ecological, social, and climatic benefits. However, tree selection often emphasizes aesthetics and pollution control, overlooking resilience to extreme weather, particularly cyclones in coastal regions. This study proposes a climate-resilient tree selection framework that integrates ecological function and mechanical stability. Thirty-four commonly planted species in Bhubaneswar, a cyclone-prone city in Odisha, India, were evaluated using four indices: Air Pollution Tolerance Index (APTI), Cyclone Tolerance Index (CTI), Use Val

Ursolic Acid and Its Derivatives as Bioactive Agents.

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as cancer, diabetes, and chronic respiratory and cardiovascular diseases continue to be threatening and deadly to human kind. Resistance to and side effects of known drugs for treatment further increase the threat, while at the same time leaving scientists to search for alternative sources from nature, especially from plants. Pentacyclic triterpenoids (PT) from medicinal plants have been identified as one class of secondary metabolites that could play a critical role in the treatment and management of several NCDs. One of such PT is ursolic acid (UA, 3 β-h
