BACKGROUND: Mindfulness-based interventions are increasingly used to target transdiagnostic processes implicated in emotional distress, yet little is known about whether post-treatment mindfulness outcomes can be predicted from clinically interpretable participant profiles. This secondary analysis examined whether machine-learning models could predict post-intervention mindfulness following a Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program.
METHODS: The sample comprised 378 adults who completed an 8-week, face-to-face MBSR program. Candidate predictors included sociodemographic, health, med

Mentalization is the ability to keep mind in mind, both one's own and another person's mind. Without mentalization ability, man is unable to anticipate personal and other person's reactions in different situations and to control his/her own emotional states. Insufficient mentalization ability makes life erratic and uncontrollable. It is associated with emotionally unstable personality and other psychic and neuropsychiatric disorders. At least five evidence-based forms of psychotherapy have been developed for the treatment of emotionally unstable personality disorder, all promoting the patient'

The growing body of research on mindfulness has led to the development of a wide range of self-report instruments designed to assess the construct. However, conceptual and psychometric issues have arisen, partly as a result of inconsistent definitions and operationalizations, but also from challenges in scale development and validation. This systematic review synthesizes and evaluates the psychometric qualities of 21 self-report mindfulness scales intended for adult populations and tested in their English versions. The scales were evaluated in reference to nine psychometric quality domains, ea

A self-report inventory for the assessment of mindfulness skills was developed, and its psychometric characteristics and relationships with other constructs were examined. Participants included three samples of undergraduate students and a sample of outpatients with borderline personality disorder Based on discussions of mindfulness in the current literature, four mindfulness skills were specified: observing, describing, acting with awareness, and accepting without judgment. Scales designed to measure each skill were developed and evaluated. Results showed good internal consistency and test-re

BACKGROUND: University students experience elevated stress levels that increase the risk for developing mental disorders. Online mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) represent a promising low-threshold approach to improve health-related variables. However, evidence regarding their effects on psychobiological stress markers and interoceptive abilities remains limited.
METHODS: This randomized controlled trial investigated the efficacy of an 8-week guided online MBI (StudiCare Mindfulness) in university students (n = 60) compared to a waitlist control group (n = 61). Assessments were conducte

Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) are increasingly studied for clinical conditions, with evidence pointing toward their benefits for chronic and autoimmune disorders. Research shows the biological effect of MBIs on immunological pathways and benefits for fatigue, mood, and quality of life in chronic conditions. These raise the possibility of benefits in myasthenia gravis (MG). However, there is a gap in research on MBIs for MG. This paper makes the case for MG research to study the potential benefits, mechanisms, and special considerations when designing MBIs for people living with MG. Su

BACKGROUND: Mindfulness-based smoking cessation interventions may aid smoking cessation by teaching individuals to pay attention to, and work mindfully with, negative affective states, cravings, and other symptoms of nicotine withdrawal. Types of mindfulness-based interventions include mindfulness training, which involves training in meditation; acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT); distress tolerance training; and yoga.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the efficacy of mindfulness-based interventions for smoking cessation among people who smoke, and whether these interventions have an effect on menta

We have created a mindfulness approach to treat patients who experience multiple, persistent, and disabling physical symptoms that cannot be explained by a well-defined medical or surgical condition. Randomized controlled trials in this area are few, and research is hampered by the lack of clear definitions. Bodily distress syndrome (BDS) or bodily stress is an empirically defined definition unifying various conditions such as fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, and somatization disorder. In the present PhD, we explored whether patients suffering from BDS may be committed to mental trainin

Previous studies have explored the effect of mindfulness on life satisfaction, but the mechanism has not been explored in terms of daily mindfulness. Therefore, based on the mindfulness coping model, this study uses a daily diary method to examine whether individuals' daily mindfulness could predict life satisfaction and whether this relationship was mediated by rumination. In this study, 178 adults who had not received mindfulness training completed the same diary for continuous 14 days, in which their mindfulness and rumination at state level were measured. Besides, mindfulness, rumination,

Mindfulness based psychotherapeutic interventions have shown to be an effective intervention for quite some time now. These intervention, however, have not been that successful with individuals who experience dissociative disorders. There is a very clear disconnect between these two fields. In an attempt to close the gap, reviewing what mindfulness might be from an attachment and human developed lens, one can learn that there is a lot more occurring in a mindful state other than relaxation. There is a level of human development achievement that comes from a regular mindfulness practice that se

Obsessive-compulsive features are commonly found in high-achieving people including psychiatrists, psychologists, and scientists. These traits have a substantial but unrecognized cultural influence on psychiatric and psychological science and practice. This article reviews obsessive-compulsive mechanisms and discusses the ways they both promote and impede psychiatric and psychological science and practice. It examines them in relation to two of the dominant psychiatric and psychological paradigms of our era, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM), and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy. Finally

Anxiety is common during pregnancy and associated with poorer outcomes for mother and child. Our single-arm pilot study of an eight-week Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) intervention for pregnant women with elevated anxiety showed significant pre- to post-intervention improvements in anxiety, depression, worry, mindfulness, and self-compassion. It remains unclear whether these improvements are maintained post-partum and whether amount of formal mindfulness practice is correlated with outcomes. The current study examined whether 1) improvements in psychosocial outcomes were maintained

OBJECTIVE: To assess the frequency spectrum of the normal waking human eyes-closed EEG while concentrating on a mental task.
METHODS: Ten adult normal volunteers listened to a CD encouraging mindfulness for one hour and five minutes while their EEG was recorded on a 128 channel DC based ANT system. The software package BESA Research version 6.1 was used for data analysis. The data were subjected to topographic display, frequency as well as independent component analysis.
RESULTS: Near-DC activity that extended beyond one hour, as well as rhythmic wave durations ranging from about 10 to 35min

Depersonalization (DP), i.e., feelings of being detached from one's own mental processes or body, can be considered as a form of mental escape from the full experience of reality. This mental escape is thought to be etiologically linked with maltreatment during childhood. The detached state of consciousness in DP contrasts with certain aspects of mindfulness, a state of consciousness characterized by being in touch with the present moment. Against this background, the present article investigates potential connections between DP severity, mindfulness, and childhood trauma in a mixed sample of

Mindfulness and other behavioral approaches have demonstrated efficacy in treatment of different kinds of chronic pain condition and migraine in particular. Such treatments are of particular utility in the treatment of chronic forms of migraine, also associated to medication overuse headache, in reason of the relevant comorbidity - and bidirectional relationship - between migraine, and two of the most common associated conditions, namely anxiety and depression. Second, in reason of the impact that such treatments may have on behavioral issues that might promote MOH maintenance, including exter

Classical conditioning is a quintessential learning process; however, maladaptive forms of conditioning sustain many unhealthy behaviors (e.g., addiction). Mindfulness training is theorized to de-automatize conditioned behavior by decoupling stimulus and response. This study assessed the effect of mindfulness training on conditioned behavior during a classical conditioning task. Findings indicated mindfulness training decreased classically conditioned behavior relative to an active control condition, delaying the onset of first conditioned response and decreasing conditioned response frequency

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the effects of the Mindfulness-Based Blood Pressure Reduction (MB-BP) program on depression symptoms in individuals with elevated blood pressure (BP). Exploratory analyses examined whether childhood abuse or neglect moderated these effects.
METHOD: Adults with elevated BP (n = 201; ≥120/80 mmHg) were randomized to MB-BP (n = 101) or enhanced usual care (n = 100) and followed for 6 months. MB-BP trained participants in mindful self-regulation skills-self-awareness, attention control, and emotion regulation-and applied these skills to modifiable determinants of B

Thoracic aortic dissection (TAD) with aorto-oesophageal fistula formation is an uncommon but fatal cause of haematemesis. A case is presented of a previously healthy 63-year-old man who presented to the emergency department with syncope and haematemesis. He had no history of heavy alcohol intake and was previously well. Bedside portable chest x ray revealed a widened mediastinum and, while awaiting a CT angiogram, he had a further large haematemesis which led to him undergoing resuscitation and rapid sequence intubation. CT angiography of his thoracic aorta revealed a large thoracic aortic ane
