Supercritical miniaturization of turbulence in microsystems.

The onset of turbulence in microsystems remains a fundamental scientific and engineering challenge due to the dominance of viscous forces at small confined scales. This study, therefore, experimentally demonstrates the concept of Turbulence-On-a-Chip by generating and characterizing turbulent-like flow regimes in microconfined environments under high-pressure transcritical conditions, without the addition of any external force or passive strategy. A custom-built microfluidic test rig is developed to operate with CO[Formula: see text] at supercritical pressures and controlled temperature differ

Miniaturization of hydrolase assays in thermocyclers.

We adapted the protocols of reducing sugar measurements with dinitrosalicylic acid and bicinchoninic acid for thermocyclers and their use in enzymatic assays for hydrolases such as amylase and β-1,3-glucanase. The use of thermocyclers for these enzymatic assays resulted in a 10 times reduction in the amount of reagent and volume of the sample needed when compared with conventional microplate protocols. We standardized absorbance readings from the polymerase chain reaction plates, which allowed us to make direct readings of the techniques above, and a β-glycosidase assay was also established un

Aerogel micro-optics and their homothetic miniaturization.

We report the design, fabrication and characterization of functional refractive microlens arrays and micro-Fresnel zone plate arrays made of three distinct material states, namely ultra-porous monolithic silica aerogel, silica xerogel, and dense fused silica, all derived from a common template. Aerogel and xerogel elements serve as master objects which are thermally vitrified via viscous flow to produce dense fused silica microlenses. In this process, the skeletal silica network collapses, densifies, and contracts while preserving morphological similarity, effectively constituting a homothetic

Optics miniaturization strategy for demanding Raman spectroscopy applications.

Raman spectroscopy provides non-destructive, label-free quantitative studies of chemical compositions at the microscale as used on NASA's Perseverance rover on Mars. Such capabilities come at the cost of high requirements for instrumentation. Here we present a centimeter-scale miniaturization of a Raman spectrometer using cheap non-stabilized laser diodes, densely packed optics, and non-cooled small sensors. The performance is comparable with expensive bulky research-grade Raman systems. It has excellent sensitivity, low power consumption, perfect wavenumber, intensity calibration, and 7 cm-1

Miniaturization: the clue to clinical application of the artificial placenta.

The artificial placenta as a fascinating treatment alternative for neonatal lung failure has been the subject of clinical research for over 50 years. Pumpless systems have been in use since 1986. However, inappropriate dimensioning of commercially available oxygenators has wasted some of the theoretical advantages of this concept. Disproportional shunt fractions can cause congestive heart failure. Blood priming of large oxygenators and circuits dilutes fetal hemoglobin (as the superior oxygen carrier), is potentially infectious, and causes inflammatory reactions. Flow demands of large extracor

Miniaturization and Optimization of NMR Shimsets Allow Efficient Field Shimming.

We present a finite element method (FEM)-based framework for the joint optimization of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) cells, encompassing both the radio frequency (RF) coil and integrated shim systems. This approach enables systematic design with respect to sensitivity, RF isolation, and magnetic field homogeneity, ensuring efficient operation under demanding high-field conditions. As a proof of concept, we demonstrate a four-channel parallel NMR spectroscopy probe, where each channel incorporates a stripline-based RF detector confined by ground planes for intrinsic shielding and reduced int

Miniaturization: How many cells are needed to build a tooth?

BACKGROUND: Organs that develop early in life, and are replaced by a larger version as the animal grows, often represent a miniature version of the adult organ. Teeth constituting the first functional dentition in small-sized teleost fish, such as medaka (Oryzias latipes), are examples of such miniature organs. With a dentin cone as small as the size of one human cell, or even smaller, these teeth raise the question how many dentin-producing cells (odontoblasts) are required to build such a tooth, and whether this number can be as little as one. RESULTS: Based on detailed observations with tr

Miniaturization of a planar-electrode linear ion trap mass spectrometer.

RATIONALE: We describe the miniaturization of a linear-type ion trap mass spectrometer for possible applications in portable chemical analysis. This work demonstrates the potential and the advantages of using lithographically patterned electrode plates in realizing an ion trap with dimension y0 less than 1 mm. The focus of this work was to demonstrate the viability and flexibility of the patterned electrode approach to trap miniaturization, and also to discover potential obstacles to its use. METHODS: Planar, low-capacitance ceramic substrates were patterned with metal electrodes using photol

Convergent genome streamlining accompanies independent miniaturization in the world's smallest fishes.

Miniaturization, the reduction of adult body size to an extreme degree, has evolved repeatedly across vertebrates. Yet its genomic underpinnings remain poorly understood. Cypriniformes, the most species-rich order of freshwater fishes, contains multiple miniaturized lineages that have evolved via contrasting developmental processes. Proportioned dwarfs are tiny-bodied but otherwise morphologically similar to larger relatives, while progenetic miniatures exhibit developmental truncation and retain larval-like anatomical features into adulthood. Using a new time-calibrated phylogeny of 309 cypri

Toward Miniaturization of Defibrillators: Design of a Defibrillation Charge/Discharge Circuit.

Sudden cardiac death (SCD) is caused by a change in heart rhythm. Ventricular fibrillation (VF) is the most common cause of SCD, and electrical defibrillation is the most effective method of terminating VF. Miniaturization of defibrillators has extraordinary significance. In this study, we proposed a miniaturized design for the defibrillator charge/discharge circuit. The core circuit, composed by low-operating-voltage and surface-mount elements, achieved a size of 4.9 cm × 4.9 cm. We specially designed a voltage management system to power the system by a low-voltage battery. The proposed circu

Miniaturization of duckweeds occurred through compression of the angiosperm body plan.

Miniaturization, or an extreme reduction in body size, is present in both the plant and animal kingdoms. In animals, this concept has been studied across a range of systems, where it has been associated with the vestigialization or loss of structures such as the reduction of lungs in miniature frogs1 and the loss of body segments in tardigrades.2 By contrast, the morphological mechanisms underlying plant miniaturization remain poorly understood. The Araceae exhibits a striking evolutionary breadth, encompassing both the smallest flowering plants and some of the largest herbaceous species known

Designed miniaturization of microfluidic biosensor platforms using the stop-flow technique.

Here, we present a novel approach to increase the degree of miniaturization as well as the sensitivity of biosensor platforms by the optimization of microfluidic stop-flow techniques independent of the applied detection technique (e.g. electrochemical or optical). The readout of the labeled bioassays, immobilized in a microfluidic channel, under stop-flow conditions leads to a rectangular shaped peak signal. Data evaluation using the peak height allows for a high level miniaturization of the channel geometries. To study the main advantages and limitations of this method by numerical simulation

MEMS vapor cells-based Rydberg-atom electrometry toward miniaturization and high sensitivity.

Rydberg-atom electrometry, as an emerging cutting-edge technology, features high sensitivity, broad bandwidth, calibration-free operation, and beyond. However, until now the key atomic vapor cells used for confining electric field-sensitive Rydberg atoms nearly made with traditional glass-blown techniques, hindering the miniaturization, integration, and batch manufacturing. Here, we present the wafer-level MEMS atomic vapor cells with glass-silicon-glass sandwiched structure that are batch-manufactured for both frequency stability and electric field measurement. We use specially customized ult

Towards point-of-care HIV testing: Terahertz PCF sensor integration and miniaturization.

The Human Immunodeficiency Virus, or HIV, is a retrovirus which aims at CD4 cells in particular to destroy the body's natural defenses along with impair its capacity for fighting off illness plus ailments. In this circumstance we suggested a Photonic Crystal Fiber (PCF) sensor for detection of this lethal virus. Our intended sensor exhibits Max Relative Sensitivity (RS) 95.2% & 95% for x & y axis correspondingly when f = 3.0 THz. It also impresses us with minimal Confinement Loss (CL) of 1.06 × 10-7 & 2.04 × 10-7dB/m plus Effective Material Loss (EML) of 0.0078 & 0.0110 cm-1 in that order for

Simplex-anchored regressors for fast global optimization-oriented miniaturization of microwave circuits.

The small physical size of high-frequency components is an essential prerequisite in an increasing number of applications. While size reduction of microwave circuits can be achieved with a suitable choice of architecture, ensuring the best available compromise between electrical parameters and size necessitates meticulous adjustment of all system dimensions. Due to the complexity of electrically small structures, parameter adjustment should be executed globally. Nevertheless, it is an expensive endeavor because it entails a large number of system evaluations executed through electromagnetic (E

Recent advances in miniaturization-the role of microchip electrophoresis in clinical analysis.

This review is a follow-up from the last review published in 2012 that covers the same topic [22]. Its aim is to cover new innovations and developments since then, involving the role of microchip capillary electrophoresis (MCE) in clinical analysis. MCE has shown great promise in separation science, as it's a state-of-the-art analytical separation technique that offers speed, portability, reduced sample, and reagent requirements, repeatability, can be used online or offline, and can be coupled with many kinds of analytical detectors. It is particularly important in clinical analysis, as it off

Miniaturization in Domestic Dogs: Relationships Among Cranial Shape, Head Indexes, and Body Weight.

Diagnostic interpretation is complicated by normal anatomic variation in canine heads. This retrospective cross-sectional study examined how miniaturization-proxied by body weight-relates to four cranial shape categories (archetypal, intermediate, round, and extreme round) and three quantitative head measures (cranial index, skull index, and facial index) in 852 domestic dogs using archived medical records, including CT images. Dogs were also grouped for further analysis: Group A, breeds predisposed to syringomyelia; Group B, breeds not at risk. Head indexes correlated positively with each oth
