Health Care of Sexual Minority Women.

Sexual minority women may be invisible in health care settings unless practitioners ask every patient about sexual attractions/behaviors and identity. Sexual minority women need to feel comfortable and able to share information about their sexual identity, partners, and lives. No medical diagnoses are found more commonly in sexual minority women, but problems such as overweight/obesity, increased tobacco and alcohol use, increased mental health problems, and a past history of childhood sexual abuse are common. These factors intertwine when treating sexual minority women.

HIV/AIDS: a minority health issue.

HIV infection among racial and ethnic minorities is an ongoing health crisis. The disproportionate impact of HIV infection on racial and ethnic minorities has affected communities already struggling with many social and economic challenges, such as poverty, substance abuse, homelessness, unequal access to health care, and unequal treatment once in the health care system. Superimposed on these challenges is HIV infection, the transmission of which is facilitated by many of these factors. Although the epidemic is disproportionately affecting all racial and ethnic minorities, within these minority

Words and Deeds: Presidential Discussion of Minority Health, Public Policies, and Minority Perceptions.

What are the different rhetorical approaches presidents used to address minority health inequality? More importantly, how have the efforts of presidents impacted minorities' perceptions of health? I offer a historical perspective that describes the three major periods of presidential engagement in discussions of minority health since the 1960s. I couple this historical overview with an empirical assessment that introduces a novel and extensive dataset of every presidential discussion of minority health spanning five decades (1960-2016). This study finds that, since the early 1990s, presidents

Mental Health in Sexual Minority and Transgender Women.

Although sexual minority women (SMW) and transgender women have become increasingly visible in recent years and have made progress in achieving civil rights, they continue to face significant levels of discrimination, stigma, and physical violence. As a result, each group faces a wide variety of health disparities, including mental illness and substance use disorders. Overall, both SMW and transgender women experience higher rates of mood and anxiety disorders, suicidality, and substance use disorders than their heterosexual and cisgender counterparts. Digestive Health in Sexual and Gender Minority Populations.

It has been over 50 years since the Stonewall Inn Riots in June 1969, a seminal event for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and other sexual and gender-diverse minorities (LGBTQI+, or lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and everyone else) rights movement. However, sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals still face discrimination and harassment due to their sexual orientation or gender identity. As such, the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities has identified SGM communities as a "health disparity population." Broadly, there

Perceived impact of oral health conditions among minority adolescents.

OBJECTIVES: This study assessed the perceived impact of oral health conditions, and the relationship of two measures of self-reported outcome, the RAND SF-36 and the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP), to clinical indicators of oral health among inner-city adolescents. METHODS: A convenience sample of 93 minority adolescents completed the RAND SF-36 and the OHIP and 76 of them completed a clinical dental examination assessing DMFS. RESULTS: Participants averaged 14.4 (SD = 1.2) years old; 52 percent were female; and 86 percent were African-American. The mean DMFS was 8.8 (SD = 6.3). Participa

Sexuality Minority Status, Victimization, Mental Health, and Substance Use.

Background: Prior research suggests that sexual minority status is related to victimization, mental health issues, and substance use. However, few studies have sought to connect these relationships in a way supported by theory, and fewer have utilized probability and/or nationally representative samples. Objective: The current study seeks to test the relationships among these variables, guided by general strain theory (GST). Methods: One wave of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health dataset (Add Health) (N = 14,121) and path modeling in Mplus are utilized. Results: Mode

Gender Minority Youth Experiencing Homelessness and Corresponding Health Disparities.

PURPOSE: Pediatricians and youth service providers frequently interface with vulnerable populations, including gender minority youth (e.g., transgender, nonbinary, gender questioning, and other gender diverse individuals) and youth experiencing homelessness. The purposes of this study are to estimate the prevalence of homelessness and types of homelessness experienced among gender minority youth and their corresponding health outcomes. METHODS: Data for this study came from gender minority (n = 3,194) and cisgender (n = 93,337) high school students who answered questions on transgender status

Psychosocial assets and mental health of minority medical students.

In this study, black, white, and Hispanic medical students are compared in terms of their psychosocial assets and mental health status when they entered medical school and after a year of medical training. The data show that the minority students entered medical school with some distinct advantages over the white students. The minority students reported greater social supports, higher self-esteem, lower anxiety, and more internal locus of control. After one year, however, the blacks manifested slightly lower self-esteem and higher levels of hostility and external locus of control. The Hispanic

Nutrition and Health Disparities: The Role of Dairy in Improving Minority Health Outcomes.

Consuming a balanced diet, such as the food groups represented on MyPlate, is key to improving health disparities. Despite the best of intentions, however, the dietary guidelines can be culturally challenging, particularly when it comes to dairy consumption. Many African and Hispanic Americans avoid milk and dairy products-key contributors of three shortfall nutrients (calcium, potassium and vitamin D)-because many people in these populations believe they are lactose intolerant. However, avoiding dairy can have significant health effects. An emerging body of evidence suggests that yogurt and o

Sociopolitical Threats Heighten Minority Stress for Current Sexual and Gender Minority Public Health Trainees in the United States.

The current U.S. sociopolitical climate-marked by recent targeted anti-lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other sexual and gender minority (LGBTQ+) legislation and executive orders (i.e., sociopolitical stressors)-including those focused on antidiversity, equity, and inclusion-leads to heightened minority stress among current LGBTQ+ public health trainees, threatening their well-being and career trajectories. Macro-level (distal) stressors, such as discriminatory funding cuts, institutional censorship, and sociopolitical hostility interact with proximal stressors (i.e., expectatio

Couch-Surfing and Mental Health Outcomes among Sexual Minority Adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Sexual minority youth are at more than twice the risk of experiencing homelessness than their peers and both sexual minority youth and youth experiencing homelessness have disproportionate risk for mental health disorder symptoms. Couch-surfing is a common form of homelessness experienced by youth, but research on the relationship between couch-surfing and mental health outcomes, especially among sexual minority adolescents (SMA), is limited. METHODS: Utilizing a sample of 2,558 SMA (14-17 years old) recruited via social media and respondent-driven sampling, this study explores th

Resilience and Concussion Recovery in Minority Women: Promoting Health Equity.

Resilience is associated with the degree to which post-concussion symptoms (PCS) are experienced. However, the role of resilience in the recovery trajectory of minority women, who tend to have prolonged concussion recovery, is poorly characterized. We evaluated the association between resilience and PCS, to determine if the association differed by race. A secondary data analysis was performed. Resilience was assessed using the Resilience Scale and PCS with the Rivermead questionnaire. Both variables were evaluated 6-10 weeks post-injury. Baseline demographics, spearman correlation, and multiva

Reproductive Health Considerations in Sexual and/or Gender Minority Adolescents.

Disparities exist in the area of reproductive health for lesbian, gay, bisexual (LGB), and transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) adolescents compared with cisgender, heterosexual adolescents, particularly related to pregnancy and pregnancy risk factors. Review of the literature indicates an estimated increased risk of adolescent pregnancy involvement between 2 and 10 times higher for LGB youth compared with heterosexual youth. This might be explained by a broad spectrum of sexual health risks experienced, including an earlier age of sexual debut, exposure to sexual abuse, and a higher nu

Sexual Minority Women's Health Behaviors and Outcomes After Breast Cancer.

PURPOSE: Sexual minority women (e.g., lesbians, bisexual women, and women who prefer a female partner) are a known risk population for overweight, obesity, and mental health problems. Our objective is to compare sexual minority women with breast cancer to a control sample of sexual minority women without cancer to identify differences in healthful lifestyle practices, weight, well-being and mental health. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study of 85 sexual minority women with a breast cancer history (cases) matched by age and partner status to 85 sexual minority controls without cancer. We

Advance Care Planning Among Sexual Minority Men: Sociodemographic, Health Care, and Health Status Predictors.

Objectives: Advance care planning (ACP) specifies decision-making surrogates and preferences for serious illness or end-of-life medical care. ACP research has largely neglected sexual minority men (SMM), a population that experiences disparities in health care and health status. Methods: We examined formal and informal ACP among SMM ages 40+ in the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study (N = 1,071). Results: For informal ACP (50%), younger SMM and men with past cardiovascular events had greater odds of planning; single men had lower odds of planning.
