To assess the potential toxicity of mistletoe ingestion, data were collected on 14 cases of ingestion of one to three berries or one or two leaves of American mistletoe (Phoradendron sp) from 1982 to 1985. Eleven patients ingested berries and three ingested leaves; none became symptomatic. Nine patients were observed at home without intervention except poison center telephone follow-up. Five had induced emesis, including two who were referred to emergency departments for evaluation, where no findings other than ipecac-induced vomiting were noted. Also reviewed were data on a total of 318 cases

Life-threatening side effects of mistletoe therapy are mostly negated by physicians working in complementary medicine. This article reports on a case of life-threatening anaphylactic shock after carrying out mistletoe therapy. In patients with a carcinoid syndrome (flushes, diarrhea, bronchoconstriction) the diagnosis of anaphylactic shock can be masked by the findings of a neuroendocrine neoplasm. Before a planned complementary medicine mistletoe therapy patients should also be well-informed on rare life-threatening side effects.

We described a 55-year-old man, in whom the first manifestation of retroperitoneal fibrosis (RPF) was only coronary arterial involvement, which had no periaortic or peri-iliac and urinary system retroperitoneum involvement in general and other systemic clinical manifestations. Coronary manifestation was called "mistletoe sign" on the images. Here, we report a case of IgG4-related RPF remission that was only coronary arterial involvement after treatment.

Partially and highly purified lectins from Viscum album L. (mistletoe) cause a dose-dependent decrease of viability of human leukemia cell cultures, MOLT-4, after 72 h treatment. The LC50 of the partially purified lectin was 27.8 ng/ml, of the highly purified lectin 1.3 ng/ml. Compared to the highly purified lectin a 140-fold higher protein concentration of an aqueous mistletoe drug was required to obtain similar cytotoxic effects on MOLT-4 cells. Cytotoxicity of the highly purified lectin was preferentially inhibited by D-galactose and lactose, cytotoxicity of the mistletoe drug and the parti

BACKGROUND: Extracts of mistletoe (Viscum album) are used in many countries for adjuvant cancer therapy. These extracts contain mistletoe lectins and viscotoxins that are supposed to have immunostimulating and cytotoxic effects, respectively. The treatment is usually well tolerated.
OBJECTIVE: To report a case of severe anaphylaxis secondary to mistletoe extract administration with demonstrable anti-IgE antibodies to mistletoe.
METHODS: Skin prick tests, basophil histamine release, basophil activation test, and immunoblotting were performed to characterize the pathophysiology of this reactio

PURPOSE: Knowledge of natural mistletoe lectins (nML) pharmacokinetics can be regarded as essential for further rational studies with mistletoe preparations. Studies with intravenous application of a recombinant type II ribosome inactivating protein (rML) analogous to nML revealed a short half-life of about 13 min in cancer patients. This open-label, phase I, monocenter clinical trial was performed in order to describe the pharmacokinetics of nML.
METHODS: In 15 healthy male volunteers aged 18-42 years, nML were detected with a modified sandwich immuno-polymerase chain reaction (PCR) techniqu

Parasitic plants known as mistletoes are a key resource in ecosystems and form intricate networks of biotic interactions. Several mistletoe species exhibit specific associations with particular hosts and dispersers, such as Psittacanthus robustus, which is distributed across South America. Here, we assessed the climatic niche similarity between P. robustus, its host trees, and seed dispersers, and identified the main factors influencing the parasite's occurrence. We analyzed the spatial overlap among P. robustus, hosts, and seed dispersers using niche equivalence and similarity tests and asses

The European mistletoe (Viscum album) is an epiphytic hemiparasite that attaches to its host by an endophytic system. Two aspects are essential for its survival: the structural integrity of the host-parasite interface must be maintained during host growth and the functional integrity of the interface must be maintained during ontogeny and under mechanical stress. We investigated the mechanical properties of the mistletoe-host interaction. Intact and sliced mistletoe-host samples, with host wood as reference, were subjected to tensile tests up to failure. We quantified the rough fractured surfa

Although multimodal therapeutic management has significantly improved outcome in prostate cancer (PCa) patients, treatment options for castrate-resistant disease remain challenging. Plant-derived mistletoe extracts have supported cancer patients and are, therefore, widely used as complementary medicine. However, mechanisms behind possible mistletoe benefits to PCa patients remain to be explored. The present study was designed to evaluate the effect of mistletoe extracts from four different host trees (Tiliae, Populi, Salicis, and Crataegi) on the growth and proliferation of PCa cell lines in v

A 69-year-old woman presented with symptoms of presumed cardiac involvement of idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis, otherwise known as Ormond disease. Distinct pericoronary tissue proliferations were depicted at cardiac magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and coronary computed tomographic (CT) angiography. On images, the coronary manifestation was termed the "mistletoe sign." The presence of the mistletoe sign on cardiac MR and coronary CT angiographic images is probably rare, but it might be a characteristic manifestation of retroperitoneal fibrosis. With the increasing number of noninvasive card

AIM: To explore the antioxidant and free radical scavenger properties of mistletoe alkali (MA).
METHODS: The antioxidant effect of mistletoe alkali on the oxidative stress induced by carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) in rats was investigated. The rats were divided into four groups (n = 8): CCl4-treated group (1 mL/kg body weight), MA -treated group (90 mg/kg), CCl4+MA-treated group and normal control group. After 4 wk of treatment, the level of malondialdehyde (MDA), a lipid peroxidation product (LPO) was measured in serum and homogenates of liver and kidney. Also, the level of glutathione (GSH), a

Chemical pleurodesis is an effective treatment modality to reduce recurrence of malignant effusion. Several agents have been used in chemical pleurodesis but, it is not yet clear which is better. Eighteen Sprague-Dawley rats were used and classified into three groups: a group intrapleurally injected normal saline (group A, n=6), 400mg/kg talc (group B, n=6), and 9mg/kg mistletoe extraction (ME) (group C, n=6). Autopsy was performed to evaluate the pleural adhesion, pathologic examination of pleura and lung and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid analysis 4 weeks after pleurodesis. Both group B and C

PURPOSE: Mistletoe extract (ME) is widely used for patients with cancer to support therapy and to improve quality of life (QoL). However, its use is controversial due to suboptimal trials and a lack of data supporting its intravenous administration.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This phase I trial of intravenous mistletoe (Helixor M) aimed to determine the recommended phase II dosing and to evaluate safety. Patients with solid tumor progressing on at least one line of chemotherapy received escalating doses of Helixor M three times a week. Assessments were also made of tumor marker kinetics and QoL.

PURPOSE: Along with the use of herbal medicines worldwide, the number of cases of reported herbal-induced hepatotoxicity has also been increasing. This report describes a case of liver injury caused by mistletoe and kudzu extracts in a patient previously in good health.
CASE: A 55-year-old man with no significant medical history was admitted to a hospital with a 10-day history of mild fever and brownish urine. The patient also had epigastric and right upper quadrant pain. The patient's liver function test results showed significantly elevated aspartate aminotransferase (AST) (958 IU/L) and al

OBJECTIVE: Mistletoe therapy is an item of research because of its immunological features. Nevertheless, mistletoe should be also an item of research because of its semiotics. Long before R. Steiner proposed mistletoe as an anticancer drug, this plant seemed to have its meaning not by pharmacodynamics but by pharmacosemiotics and magic. Thus, metaphorical aspects of mistletoe therapy should be described by processing the transcript and paintings from a therapeutic group session of cancer patients. Especially the relation between individually and historically coded metaphors should be looked at

BALB/c-mice (n = 10 per experimental group) were intravenously infected with 5 x 10(4) and 5 x 10(5) viable cells of Listeria monocytogenes SLCC 4013. About 50-80 h after this challenge, all mice of the untreated control groups succumbed to their infection. Pretreatment of experimental animals on the optimal immunoactive schedule with the galactoside-specific mistletoe lectin (ML-1; 1 ng/kg body weight; days 1, 4, 5, 6 before challenge), however, evidently reduced the lethality of listerial infection (survival rate 60%).

The mistletoes, stem hemiparasites of Asia and Europe, have been used as medicinal herbs for many years and possess sophisticated systems to obtain nutrients from their host plants. Although knowledge about ethnomedicinal uses of mistletoes is prevalent in Asia, systematic scientific study of these plants is still lacking, unlike its European counterparts. This review aims to evaluate the literature on Scurrula and Viscum mistletoes. Both mistletoes were found to have anticancer, antimicrobial, antioxidant and antihypertensive properties. Plants from the genus Scurrula were found to inhibit ca

Viscum album (mistletoe) has been documented as a traditional treatment of diabetes. In acute 20-min tests, 1-10 mg/ml aqueous extract of mistletoe evoked a stepwise 1.1- to 12.2-fold stimulation of insulin secretion from clonal pancreatic B-cells. This effect was abolished by 0.5 mM diazoxide and prior exposure to extract did not alter subsequent stimulation of insulin secretion induced by 10 mM L-alanine, thereby negating a detrimental effect on cell viability. The insulin-releasing effect of mistletoe extract was unaltered by 16.7 mM glucose, l-alanine (10 mM), 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine (
