Mobiluncus curtisii bacteremia.

Mobiluncus curtisii was isolated from the blood of a 35-year-old man with a medical history of ulcerative colitis who was admitted unconscious to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). A CT scan revealed massive intracerebral hemorrhage in the left hemisphere. Temperature remained constant over 38.5 degrees C; therefore, two sets of blood cultures were collected. One anaerobic bottle BacT/ALERT SN (bioMerieux, France) was detected as positive after 5 days of incubation and a Gram stain confirmed a gram variable curved-shaped rod. The patient died 18 h after being admitted to the hospital.

Isolation of Mobiluncus in four cases of extragenital infections in adult women.

In four adult women with various clinical conditions, curved anaerobic bacilli, similar to organisms recently assigned to the new genus Mobiluncus, were isolated from extragenital sources. None of the patients presented symptoms or clinical abnormalities related to the genital tract. The clinical data of these cases are reported and the microbiological findings are briefly described.

Microbiological, epidemiological and clinical correlates of vaginal colonisation by Mobiluncus species.

The microbiological and epidemiological correlates of vaginal colonisation by Mobiluncus species were examined among randomly selected women attending a sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinic. Women positive for Trichomonas vaginalis were excluded. Mobiluncus spp. were detected by Gram stained vaginal smear in 21% of 633 STD clinic patients, including 53% of those with and 4% of those without bacterial vaginosis (BV), as diagnosed by clinical criteria. Gardnerella vaginalis and Mycoplasma hominis detected by vaginal culture and Mobiluncus detected by vaginal Gram stain were each independent

Mobiluncus and clue cells as predictors of PID after first-trimester abortion.

Women attending our Department for a first-trimester abortion were examined for the presence of Mobiluncus species. C. trachomatis or clue cells in vaginal discharge in an attempt to identify risk groups for development of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) after first-trimester abortion. A correlation was found between the presence of Mobiluncus and clue cells in vaginal discharge and the incidence of PID after first-trimester abortions. These women were also older than those in whom C. trachomatis was identified. Our study indicates that screening for C. trachomatis and clue cells in vaginal

Mobiluncus species in gynaecological and obstetric infections: antimicrobial resistance and prevalence in a Turkish population.

The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence and antimicrobial resistance of Mobiluncus species isolated from specimens collected from Turkish women with gynaecological infections. Mobiluncus species were isolated on enriched Schaedler agar and RLK agar plates under anaerobic conditions. The MICs of various antibiotics were evaluated using an agar dilution procedure. The prevalence of Mobiluncus species isolated from vulvo-vaginal abscesses, endometrial smears, salpingitis and bacterial vaginosis was 2%, 4.7%, 3.8% and 49%, respectively. Mobiluncus isolates were only resistant to

Extracellular vesicles from vaginal Gardnerella vaginalis and Mobiluncus mulieris contain distinct proteomic cargo and induce inflammatory pathways.

Colonization of the vaginal space with bacteria such as Gardnerella vaginalis and Mobiluncus mulieris is associated with increased risk for STIs, bacterial vaginosis, and preterm birth, while Lactobacillus crispatus is associated with optimal reproductive health. Although host-microbe interactions are hypothesized to contribute to reproductive health and disease, the bacterial mediators that are critical to this response remain unclear. Bacterial extracellular vesicles (bEVs) are proposed to participate in host-microbe communication by providing protection of bacterial cargo, delivery to intra

Severe sepsis caused by Mobiluncus curtisii subsp. curtisii in a previously healthy female: case report and review.

We present the case of a 54-year-old female with life-threatening septicaemia due to Mobiluncus curtisii subsp. curtisii. Her admission was complicated by septic shock, renal failure, disseminated intravascular coagulation, the adult respiratory distress syndrome and spontaneous splenic rupture. The patient survived with full intensive care support and intravenous ceftriaxone. Extra-genital infection with Mobiluncus species is rarely diagnosed and has been confined to breast abscesses and non-life-threatening bacteraemia. A review of extra-genital infections with Mobiluncus species is presente

Intrauterine colonization with Gardnerella vaginalis and Mobiluncus mulieris induces maternal inflammation but not preterm birth in a mouse model.

PROBLEM: Preterm birth (PTB) remains a leading cause of childhood mortality. Recent studies demonstrate that the risk of spontaneous PTB (sPTB) is increased in individuals with Lactobacillus-deficient vaginal microbial communities. One proposed mechanism is that vaginal microbes ascend through the cervix, colonize the uterus, and activate inflammatory pathways leading to sPTB. This study assessed whether intrauterine colonization with either Gardnerella vaginalis and Mobiluncus mulieris alone is sufficient to induce maternal-fetal inflammation and induce sPTB. METHOD OF STUDY: C56/B6J mice, o

Immunometabolic Analysis of Mobiluncus mulieris and Eggerthella sp. Reveals Novel Insights Into Their Pathogenic Contributions to the Hallmarks of Bacterial Vaginosis.

The cervicovaginal microbiome plays an important role in protecting women from dysbiosis and infection caused by pathogenic microorganisms. In healthy reproductive-age women the cervicovaginal microbiome is predominantly colonized by protective Lactobacillus spp. The loss of these protective bacteria leads to colonization of the cervicovaginal microenvironment by pathogenic microorganisms resulting in dysbiosis and bacterial vaginosis (BV). Mobiluncus mulieris and Eggerthella sp. are two of the many anaerobes that can contribute to BV, a condition associated with multiple adverse obstetric and

Mobiluncus mulieris alters the transcriptomic profile of cervicovaginal epithelial cells, shedding light on molecular drivers of adverse reproductive outcomes.

The vaginal microbiota is critical for reproductive health, and its disruption, particularly the loss of Lactobacillus spp. and dominance of anaerobes such as Mobiluncus mulieris (community state type IV, CST IV), is associated with bacterial vaginosis, sexually transmitted infections, and adverse reproductive outcomes, including preterm birth (PTB). While Gardnerella spp. have been widely studied, the role of M. mulieris remains poorly understood. This study used an unbiased discovery approach to examine host-microbe interactions driven by M. mulieris across distinct epithelial barriers of th

Smoking in women with chronic vaginal discomfort is not associated with decreased abundance of Lactobacillus spp. but promotes Mobiluncus and Gardnerella spp. overgrowth - secondary analysis of trial data including microbio-me analysis.

BACKGROUND: Smoking is considered a risk factor for bacterial vaginosis. It is currently unknown which parameters of the vaginal environment are affected and how smoking triggers the disease. AIM OF THE STUDY: The primary objective is to estimate the effect size of smoking on vaginal pH and the Nugent score in patients with chronic vulvovaginal discomfort prior to the development of episode of vaginosis. The secondary goal is to investigate the effect of smoking on individual microscopic parameters of the vaginal environment and on subjectively reported symptoms of vaginal discomfort. METHOD

Genetic Variation in Toll-Like Receptor 5 and Colonization with Flagellated Bacterial Vaginosis-Associated Bacteria.

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a vaginal dysbiotic condition linked to negative gynecological and reproductive sequelae. Flagellated bacteria have been identified in women with BV, including Mobiluncus spp. and BV-associated bacterium-1 (BVAB1), an uncultivated, putatively flagellated species. The host response to flagellin mediated through Toll-like receptor 5 (TLR5) has not been explored in BV. Using independent discovery and validation cohorts, we examined the hypothesis that TLR5 deficiency-defined by a dominant negative stop codon polymorphism, rs5744168-is associated with an increased risk

In vitro activity of azithromycin and erythromycin against organisms associated with bacterial vaginosis and chancroid.

The in vitro activity of the new macrolide azithromycin and erythromycin against Haemophilus ducreyi, Gardnerella vaginalis, Bacteroides spp. and Mobiluncus spp. was compared. Gardnerella vaginalis, Mobiluncus spp. and Haemophilus ducreyi were highly susceptible to both agents but azithromycin was more effective overall against all three groups of organisms. The activity of both antibiotics against Bacteroides spp. varied greatly, but azithromycin was again more active. Collectively, 62% of all Bacteroides strains were susceptible to erythromycin (MIC 1 mg/1) and 74% were susceptible to azithr

Bacterial vaginosis.

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is the most common of the vaginitides affecting women of reproductive age. It appears to be due to an alteration in the vaginal ecology by which Lactobacillus spp., the predominant organisms in the healthy vagina, are replaced by a mixed flora including Prevotella bivia, Prevotella disiens, Porphyromonas spp., Mobiluncus spp., and Peptostreptococcus spp. All of these organisms except Mobiluncus spp. are also members of the endogenous vaginal flora. While evidence from treatment trials does not support the notion that BV is sexually transmitted, recent studies have show
