Economies of scale in Saudi Arabia's refining sector: An application of modern econometric models.

This paper aims to reveal how the refining industry's inputs in Saudi Arabia affect its output and to forecast refining industry dynamics. The variables used in this paper are the refined petroleum products representing the dependent variable, with natural gas liquids, crude oil, labor, and capital acting as explanatory variables covering the period 1990-2020. The long run cointegration of the variables was observed. An error correction model utilizing the Cobb-Douglas production function framework was performed. Furthermore, this study applied the vector autoregressive model (VAR) and its dia

Explaining regional variations in health care utilization between Swiss cantons using panel econometric models.

BACKGROUND: In spite of a detailed and nation-wide legislation frame, there exist large cantonal disparities in consumed quantities of health care services in Switzerland. In this study, the most important factors of influence causing these regional disparities are determined. The findings can also be productive for discussing the containment of health care consumption in other countries. METHODS: Based on the literature, relevant factors that cause geographic disparities of quantities and costs in western health care systems are identified. Using a selected set of these factors, individual p

Insight into the main determinants of the struggle against overweight and obesity in Chile: Use of random forest techniques and econometric models.

Overweight and obesity are considered the greatest public health problem in this emerging country, which worldwide has the second-highest percentage of overweight people among its population. The objective of this work was to analyse to what extent factors traditionally used in the study of overweight and obesity (such as sociodemographic and behavioural) and new variables proposed in the literature (such as stress, financial stress and emotional support) explain this disease in the adult population of Chile. Data were obtained from the III National Health Survey (ENS) administered by the Mini

Real-world assessment to estimate multiple attributes related to treatment cost driver for mantle cell lymphoma in Japan by econometric modeling.

This study was conducted using a nationwide health care database of Japan between 1 April 2008 and 30 September 2022 to evaluate the economic burden on patients with mantle cell lymphoma (MCL). Structural equation modeling (SEM) is an advanced multivariate analysis framework used to assess the relationships between observed and latent variables within predefined causal models. In this study, SEM was employed to identify cost drivers and estimate variables related to MCL treatment cost. A total of 2,838 patients having at least one confirmed diagnosis of MCL participated in this study. As for t

Incomes, attitudes, and occurrences of invasive species: an application to signal crayfish in Sweden.

This article analyzes and carries out an econometric test of the explanatory power of economic and attitude variables for occurrences of the nonnative signal crayfish in Swedish waters. Signal crayfish are a carrier of plague which threatens the native noble crayfish with extinction. Crayfish are associated with recreational and cultural traditions in Sweden, which may run against environmental preferences for preserving native species. Econometric analysis is carried out using panel data at the municipality level with economic factors and attitudes as explanatory variables, which are derived

What characteristics of dogs help them stay shorter in shelters? Evidence from a polish animal shelter.

Staying in animal shelters can be stressful for dogs because of exposure to noise, unfamiliar environment, and social separation. Consequently, the wellbeing of sheltered dogs could be improved through reduction of length of stay in a shelter (LOS). To help inform the development of interventions aimed at LOS reduction, we analyze dogs' characteristics affecting their LOS. We use econometric modeling to identify the characteristics's influence by simultaneously controlling for multiple factors. We use data from Poland's largest animal shelter (11805 observations from the years 2000-2020). We c

Adaptive Elastic Net for Generalized Methods of Moments.

Model selection and estimation are crucial parts of econometrics. This paper introduces a new technique that can simultaneously estimate and select the model in generalized method of moments (GMM) context. The GMM is particularly powerful for analyzing complex data sets such as longitudinal and panel data, and it has wide applications in econometrics. This paper extends the least squares based adaptive elastic net estimator of Zou and Zhang (2009) to nonlinear equation systems with endogenous variables. The extension is not trivial and involves a new proof technique due to estimators lack of c

Econometric ARIMA methodology to elucidate the evolution of trends in nosocomial antimicrobial resistance rates in the European Union.

BACKGROUND: Infections with bacteria harbouring resistance to cephalosporins or fluoroquinolones (FQ) constitute a serious hazard to human health. OBJECTIVES: To establish a methodology based on econometric analysis and the largest European Union (EU) resistance database (EARS-Net), to model nosocomial antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in the EU and to detect tendency changes, steps or peaks. The contribution of legislation based on third-generation cephalosporin (3GC) and FQ class referrals to resistance rate patterns is evaluated. METHODS: Resistance to 3GC and FQ was examined in nosocomial E

International migration and falling into the income 'safety net': social assistance among foreign citizens in Sweden.

The author focuses on public assistance payments to international immigrants in Sweden. "One object of the article is to give a statistical overview of the subject; another is to discuss reasons why international migrants receive social assistance more frequently than others. The latter leads to the formulation of econometric models and the estimation for immigrants with different backgrounds." It is found that "the number of immigrants receiving social assistance has increased since the mid-1960s. We also found that immigrants are considerably more frequent recipients of social assistance tha

Revisiting the Environmental Kuznets Curve in West Africa: A spatial econometric analysis of growth, globalization, and emissions.

This study re-examines the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis for 16 West African countries from 1994 to 2023, mainly employing spatial econometric models that account for cross-border spillovers. Unlike previous EKC studies that consider countries as isolated units, this paper incorporates spatial dependence through the Spatial Durbin Model (SDM) and validates long-run dynamics using Fully Modified OLS (FMOLS) and Canonical Cointegration Regression (CCR) methods, thereby contributing to the EKC discussion. The findings indicate that CO2 emissions are significantly influenced by spat

Voluntary disclosure, banking stability, and AI-augmented forensic accounting: an exploratory econometric and machine-learning study of Palestinian banks.

INTRODUCTION: Information asymmetry between bank managers and external stakeholders is a common relationship between financial-statement fraud and banking instability. METHODS: This study combines an AI-augmented forensic accounting framework with voluntary disclosure, banking stability indicators, and exploratory machine learning (ML) approaches. The study integrates fixed-effects regression with Logistic Regression, Random Forest, XGBoost, Isolation Forest, and SHAP-based explainability using panel data from the whole population of seven banks listed on the Palestine Exchange (2019-2025).

Anticipating Economic Market Crises Using Measures of Collective Panic.

Predicting panic is of critical importance in many areas of human and animal behavior, notably in the context of economics. The recent financial crisis is a case in point. Panic may be due to a specific external threat or self-generated nervousness. Here we show that the recent economic crisis and earlier large single-day panics were preceded by extended periods of high levels of market mimicry--direct evidence of uncertainty and nervousness, and of the comparatively weak influence of external news. High levels of mimicry can be a quite general indicator of the potential for self-organized cri

Sources and processes of social influence on health-related choices: A systematic review based on a social-interdependent choice paradigm.

BACKGROUND: Most choices in healthcare are not made in social isolation. However, current econometric models treat patients' preferences as the sole determinants of their choices. Through the lens of sociology and medical sociology theories, this paper presents a systematic literature review of identifiable social influences on patients' choices, serving as a first step in developing a social-interdependent choice paradigm. METHODS: Following the PRISMA guideline and using nine databases, we identified the individual agents or groups involved in health-related choices, the functional content

Wearing failure as a path to innovation.

Innovation is a widely acknowledged key component of corporate performance management. However, most of the literature on this topic has tended to focus on determinants of corporate failure, thereby neglecting to look at the role of innovation failure in triggering innovative initiatives. By using a sample of companies covered by 2014 Community Innovation Survey data and applying econometric models, this study sought to analyze the impacts of innovative project failure. The results show that innovation failure is negatively correlated with companies' experience and acquisition of external know

A comparison of consensus and nonconsensus approaches to modeling contraceptive choice behavior.

This paper develops a more general model of contraceptive choice, taking into account a fundamental difference between the condom and the contraceptive pill, the two most commonly used reversible contraceptives in the US. The pill produces a single output of pregnancy prevention, but the condom is an input into a joint production for both pregnancy prevention and disease protection. Since the condom is ultimately used by the male, and the pill by the female, noncooperative game theory is used to model the separate male and female utility functions. Using both Stackelberg and Nash as solution c

The impact of exposure to air pollution on cognitive performance.

This paper examines the effect of both cumulative and transitory exposures to air pollution for the same individuals over time on cognitive performance by matching a nationally representative longitudinal survey and air quality data in China according to the exact time and geographic locations of the cognitive tests. We find that long-term exposure to air pollution impedes cognitive performance in verbal and math tests. We provide evidence that the effect of air pollution on verbal tests becomes more pronounced as people age, especially for men and the less educated. The damage on the aging br

Carbon emissions and financial performance in the Brazilian stock market.

This study examines the relationship between carbon emissions and the financial performance of companies listed in Brazil's Carbon Efficient Index (ICO2). Employing econometric techniques on 2021 data from 73 companies, we find a positive correlation between CO2 emissions and financial metrics like Earnings per Share (EPS), Return on Equity (ROE), and Return on Assets (ROA). We employed descriptive statistical methods for this study using ordinary least squares (OLS) and generalized least squares (GLS) estimation models. The econometric analysis software Gretl was used for linear regression an

Long-term associations between animal-source food consumption and breast and prostate cancer incidence based on cointegration and ARIMAX models.

Understanding whether and to what extent dietary habits influence the long-term incidence of hormone-sensitive cancers is undoubtedly a significant challenge. Conventional approaches, which are often limited to studies with short follow-up periods or methods that do not consider lag times, risk producing spurious associations and consequently lead to weak conclusions. In this study, we analyzed exceptionally long Italian national time series (1961–2020 for meat and dairy consumption; 1984–2020 for cancer incidence) to investigate the association between diet and the development of breast and p
