What is nursing in advanced nursing practice? Applying theories and models to advanced nursing practice-A discursive review.

AIM: This article appraises models and theories related to advanced nursing practice. It argues that while the role of the advanced nurse practitioner builds on and extends beyond traditional nursing, it remains firmly grounded in 'caring'. BACKGROUND: The stereotype that nurses 'care' and doctors 'cure' is fading. Increasingly, nurses have crossed boundaries and conducted independent assessment, diagnosis, prescribing and consultation, which used to be the doctor's role. Confusion and argument have arisen due to the higher-level practice of the advanced nurse practitioner, as many questions

Evaluation of Predictive Models of Inpatient Nursing Workloads.

The efficient allocation of medical personnel to clinical care requires adapting to fluctuating requirements. Nursing workloads at hospital wards depend not just on patient numbers (occupancy), but are also associated with individual features that are increasingly available in Electronic Health Records (EHRs). These EHRs thus promise to support human resource management with automated predictions of patient-specific nursing needs. To evaluate EHR-based workload estimates, we trained Random Forest (RF) and Gradient Boosting (GB) models in an anonymous dataset of 27,178 inpatient cases and 53 at

Quality Standards, Competency Models, and Curricula of Nursing Education and Training in Addiction Nursing: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: The nursing profession is crucial to both the prevention and treatment of substance use disorders. Higher education in nursing in the field of addiction varies among countries, and the quality of these programs also differs. It is of vital importance to observe how professional capacity and quality care in addiction nursing (AN) are being secured. The objective of this scoping review was to explore educational interventions (EI) within AN, at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, with a focus on describing the curricula, key competencies, quality standards, and the competency

The Healthy Addiction Treatment Recovery Model: Developing a Client-Driven, Nurse-Led Addiction Nursing Model.

The current model of nursing within international addiction services has been described as task oriented and reactive. Yet, it is known that nursing models should be led by client need and operate within the domain of the client and their wider environment. The aim of this study was to address this gap within addiction nursing and to develop an evidence-based addiction nursing model. To objectively assess the needs of clients, a cross-sectional survey was implemented within a representative selection of six drug treatment clinics and a sample of clients in receipt of opiate agonist treatment in

Manitoba's Provincial Travel Nurse Team: A Unique Staffing Model for Nurses.

The growing demand in providing healthcare services combined with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on healthcare staffing has created a situation where the supply of available nurses is not keeping up with the demand with increasing competition for limited resources. Rural and remote locations face unique challenges in recruiting and retaining skilled staff. Manitoba's Provincial Travel Nurse Team (PTNT) was created as an alternative staffing model with flexible employment options to retain nurses in the public health system. The PTNT's early success has demonstrated that this model can su

A model to support nursing students with dyslexia.

Dyslexia is one of the most commonly declared disabilities in higher educational institutions in the UK. This article explores the effects of specific learning difficulties, in particular dyslexia, on pre-registration nursing students on practice placements in clinical environments. The author proposes use of the OPEL model, which provides a simple, structured framework for supporting nursing students with specific learning difficulties in practice placements. This model could be applied to clinical situations where constructive support is necessary to enable the student to achieve the standar

The Multi-Agentization of a Dual-Arm Nursing Robot Based on Large Language Models.

Nursing robots are designed to serve users, and their ability to interact with humans, as well as to make task-related decisions and decompositions based on such interactions, is a fundamental prerequisite for autonomous execution of nursing tasks. Large language models offer an effective approach to facilitating human-robot interaction. However, their global perspective can lead to confusion or reduced precision when coordinating the execution of tasks by a dual-arm robot, often generating execution sequences that are inconsistent with real-world conditions. To address this challenge, this st

[Nursing--construction of a model based on the medical discourse].

The purpose is to trace a parallel between the medical discourse contents and the expected and stereotyped nurses behavior at the beginning of the twentieth century. It is a historic-social approach in which was made use of speeches uttered by nurses and physicians at nursing and medicine schools. The analysis of physicians discourse compared to nurses discourse disclose the formation of a mentality shaped and turned docile by the medical power which wanted them holy and servile.

Feminist theory and nursing: an empowerment model for research.

This article describes the use of the feminist process to empower nurses in conducting research. The criteria for feminist research, defined by Duffy, are applied to a research study that identifies the effects of physical abuse during pregnancy on maternal-infant outcomes. The authors describe the process of empowerment of the investigators through the use of a consortium model of research, the staff nurses who are conducting the interviews, and the research participants (pregnant women). The integration of feminist principles and nursing research is a process that merges similar beliefs and
