Psychological models of self-mutilation.

The descriptive models of self-mutilation fall into three broad categories. The psychodynamic formulation; the second category includes the anxiety reduction model, the hostility model, the behavioral learning model and the appeal model; the third social learning category includes the group-epidemic model and aspects of the violence and punishment model. The three models support the view that there is no single cause or motive responsible for self-mutilating behavior. Having a number of factors in mind allows for flexibility and enables clinicians to test particular hypotheses during managemen

Psychological Reserve/External Psychological Control in Psychotherapy: Review and New Models.

This article is about the concept of external psychological control (having a sense of psychological control over the environment). This article examines the construct of external psychological control and differentiates it from similar concepts, showing its unique attributes and how it can help understand a diverse array of psychological phenomena. Of note, external psychological control differs from internal psychological control, which is about maintaining internal psychological equilibrium or being grounded. The term psychological control is similar to terms, but we show that it differs fr

Motorcycle accidents, rider behaviour, and psychological models.

The aims of the present study were to: (a) investigate the factor structure of the Motorcycle Rider Behaviour Questionnaire (MRBQ) [Elliott, M.A., Baughan, B.J., Sexton, B.F., 2007. Errors and violations in relation to motorcyclists' crash risk. Accident Analysis and Prevention 39, 491-499] in among Turkish riders, and (b) study the relationships between different types of rider behaviour and motorcyclists' active and passive accidents and offences, and (c) investigate the usefulness of the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB), Health Belief Model (HBM), and Locus of Control (T-LOC) in explaining

From fragmentation to transtheoretical models of psychological therapy.

In psychological therapy, clinical training and practice is usually based on one or several of the traditional theoretical treatment orientations' subvariants and varies considerably from country to country. However, no traditional clinical theory provides a fully defined and tested causal network between concepts of disorders and clinical interventions that includes tests of alternative explanations. Adhering to the traditional orientations also bears the risk of hindering innovation and the dynamic exchange of ideas. As a consequence, therapists decide which theory to follow based on their c

[Psychological concepts - design of clinical models of schizophrenia].

This publication presents an analysis of the psychological concepts, involved in the construction of clinical models of schizophrenia; in particular - the new clinical-biological paradigm of schizophrenia (reflecting the data of own psychometric studies). Based on the analysis, 3 modes of interaction between clinical and psychological constructs in the construction of models of schizophrenia were identified. The conceptualization of clinical models was carried out from the perspective of the contribution of psychological and psychometric constructs - allowing to expand theoretical ideas about

Measurement of psychological disorders using cognitive diagnosis models.

Cognitive diagnosis models are constrained (multiple classification) latent class models that characterize the relationship of questionnaire responses to a set of dichotomous latent variables. Having emanated from educational measurement, several aspects of such models seem well suited to use in psychological assessment and diagnosis. This article presents the development of a new cognitive diagnosis model for use in psychological assessment--the DINO (deterministic input; noisy "or" gate) model--which, as an illustrative example, is applied to evaluate and diagnose pathological gamblers. As p

Subjective models of psychological disorders: mental health professional's perspectives.

This exploratory study is an extension of previous studies which have applied personal construct theory (PCP) methodology toward a better understanding of the structure and dynamics of multidisciplinary mental (and physical) health care (Kirkcaldy and Pope, 1992; Kirkcaldy et al., 1993, 2000, 2005; Kirkcaldy and Siefen, 1999). In this study we wanted to use similar cluster statistical analyses, not unlike PCP analysis, to identify the diverse subjective models of psychological ailments such as anxiety, depression, psychosis, mania, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), post stress traumatic dis

Fibromyalgia Animal Models Using Intermittent Cold and Psychological Stress.

Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic pain condition characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain and other frequent symptoms such as fatigue, sleep disturbance, cognitive impairment, and mood disorder. Based on the view that intermittent stress would be the most probable etiology for FM, intermittent cold- and intermittent psychological stress-induced generalized pain (ICGP and IPGP) models in mice have been developed and validated as FM-like pain models in terms of the patho-physiological and pharmacotherapeutic features that are shared with clinical versions. Both models show long-lasting and

A model of engagement in psychological therapy.

'Engaging' well in psychological therapy is generally associated with more positive clinical outcomes. However, the literature shows little agreement on how to define, conceptualise and measure engagement. Few studies focus primarily on engagement, and those that include engagement measures within other designs rely mainly on single behavioural indicators, such as whether between-session tasks (e.g. 'homework' in cognitive behavioural therapy) were completed, or the number of sessions attended. Although pragmatic, I suggest these indicators do not capture the full sense of what engagement mean

The alcohol paradox: a psychological model.

The paradoxical continuation of excessive drinking by chronic alcoholics despite extremely aversive personal deterioration is addressed by a two-factor theory. The theory regards the increasing stereotypy of alcohol-related behaviors as a function of: (a) primary neuropsychological impairments that result from alcohol abuse and (b) secondary fears of catastrophic failure attendant upon brain dysfunction, which leads to acquired aversions to situations that require adaptive behaviors. A schematic quantitative model of this formulation is presented that may be useful to practicing psychologists

Cognition in mania and depression: psychological models and clinical implications.

Affective disorders, including bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder, are highly prevalent throughout the world and are extremely disabling. Diagnostic and Statistical Manual criteria and psychological models strongly implicate cognitive dysfunctions as being integral to our understanding of these disorders. We review the findings from studies that have used neurocognitive tests and functional imaging techniques to explore abnormal cognition in affective disorders. In particular, we highlight the evidence for cognitive dysfunctions that persist into full clinical remission, and the re

Using expectation violation models to improve the outcome of psychological treatments.

Expectations are a central maintaining mechanism in mental disorders and most psychological treatments aim to directly or indirectly modify clinically relevant expectations. Therefore, it is crucial to examine why patients with mental disorders maintain dysfunctional expectations, even in light of disconfirming evidence, and how expectation-violating situations should be created in treatment settings to optimize treatment outcome and reduce the risk of treatment failures. The different psychological subdisciplines offer various approaches for understanding the underlying mechanisms of expectat

Emotion regulation and other psychological models for body-focused repetitive behaviors.

The term body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs) refers to a group of recurrent, problematic, destructive behaviors directed toward the body, including hair-pulling, skin-picking, and nail-biting. Individuals with BFRBs report diminished control over the behavior and a range of physical and psychological sequelae. Recent research on psychological models for BRFBs has investigated the role of emotion regulation (ER), and many authors in this area have conceptualized problematic body-focused behavior as a maladaptive ER mechanism. This article organizes and reviews the empirical research on th

[Psychological stress factors in erectile dysfunctions. Causal models and empirical results].

In this paper the role of psychosocial factors in erectile dysfunction is examined in two different ways: (1) Current approaches to the causation of psychogenic erectile dysfunctions are reviewed and discussed. (2) Empirical results from a large unselected sample of sexually dysfunctional men are presented and compared to a sample of functional men. Concerning etiological models the traditional unidimensional dichotomous concepts (psychogenic versus organic) of erectile dysfunction have to be abandoned and replaced by two-dimensional models that are able to take the clinical reality into accou

Not without cost: The philosophical and psychological drawback of hybrid effort models.

Haueis and Colaço argue that motivational/computational models of effort should incorporate metabolic factors. But metabolic and motivational accounts predict the same behavioral patterns, making their contributions hard to distinguish empirically. Moreover, philosophy provides independent reasons favoring motivational accounts: effort is unified across domains and normatively significant in ways metabolic factors cannot capture.

Psychological Stress Promotes Tumor Growth in Hepatocellular Carcinoma Models Through Myeloid Signaling.

Psychological stress has long been implicated in cancer progression, yet the underlying biological pathways remain incompletely understood. In particular, the influence of stress on myeloid cells remains poorly explored. Here, we demonstrate that restraint stress accelerates hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) progression through coordinated regulation of macrophages and neutrophils. Across sexes and strains, stressed mice exhibited enhanced tumor growth accompanied by marked neutrophil infiltration and elevated expression of neutrophil-attracting chemokines. Integrative analyses combining single-c

Ownership psychology as a cognitive adaptation: A minimalist model.

Ownership is universal and ubiquitous in human societies, yet the psychology underpinning ownership intuitions is generally not described in a coherent and computationally tractable manner. Ownership intuitions are commonly assumed to derive from culturally transmitted social norms, or from a mentally represented implicit theory. While the social norms account is entirely ad hoc, the mental theory requires prior assumptions about possession and ownership that must be explained. Here I propose such an explanation, arguing that the intuitions result from the interaction of two cognitive systems.

Breast implants and illness: a model of psychological factors.

Studies of disease outcomes have not produced an explanation or an intervention for the symptoms and complaints that some women have attributed to breast implants. Reviews of the literature have found no increased risk of specific systemic disease, and no treatment recommendations have emerged. However, similar symptoms in fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, and other contexts have been considered to be stress or behaviourally mediated, and a number of promising behavioural interventions have been developed. Aetiological, research, and treatment implications may follow from the consideration of suc
