Statistical finite elements for misspecified models.

We present a statistical finite element method for nonlinear, time-dependent phenomena, illustrated in the context of nonlinear internal waves (solitons). We take a Bayesian approach and leverage the finite element method to cast the statistical problem as a nonlinear Gaussian state-space model, updating the solution, in receipt of data, in a filtering framework. The method is applicable to problems across science and engineering for which finite element methods are appropriate. The Korteweg-de Vries equation for solitons is presented because it reflects the necessary complexity while being su

Statistical models for autocorrelated count data.

A generalized linear mixed model is an increasingly popular choice for the modelling of correlated, non-normal responses in a regression setting. A number of methods are currently available for fitting a generalized linear mixed model including Monte-Carlo Markov-Chain maximum likelihood algorithms, approximate maximum likelihood (PQL), iterative bias correction, and others. Of interest in this paper is to compare the parameter estimation of the various methods in the modelling of a count data set, the incidence of polio in the USA over the period 1970-1983, using a longlinear generalized line

[Statistical models for spatial analysis in parasitology].

The simplest way to study the spatial pattern of a disease is the geographical representation of its cases (or some indicators of them) over a map. Maps based on raw data are generally "wrong" since they do not take into consideration for sampling errors. Indeed, the observed differences between areas (or points in the map) are not directly interpretable, as they derive from the composition of true, structural differences and of the noise deriving from the sampling process. This problem is well known in human epidemiology, and several solutions have been proposed to filter the signal from the

Spatial Optical Simulator for Classical Statistical Models.

Optical simulators for the Ising model have demonstrated great promise for solving challenging problems in physics and beyond. Here, we develop a spatial optical simulator for a variety of classical statistical systems, including the clock, XY, Potts, and Heisenberg models, utilizing a digital micromirror device composed of a large number of tiny mirrors. Spins, with desired amplitudes or phases of the statistical models, are precisely encoded by a patch of mirrors with a superpixel approach. Then, by modulating the light field in a sequence of designed patterns, the spin-spin interaction is r

Generalized image models and their application as statistical models of images.

A generalized image model (GIM) is presented. Images are represented as sets of four-dimensional (4D) sites combining position and intensity information, as well as their associated uncertainty and joint variation. This model seamlessly allows for the representation of both images and statistical models (such as those used for classification of normal/abnormal anatomy and for inter-patient registration), as well as other representations such as landmarks or meshes. A GIM-based registration method aimed at the construction and application of statistical models of images is proposed. A procedure

Predictors and statistical models in congenital diaphragmatic hernia.

Despite advances in intensive care, congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) maintains a risk of death >35%. Mortality predictors have been claimed, using logistic regression. When the outcome of interest is rare (i.e. <20%), the odds ratio, measured by logistic regression, is approximately equal to the relative risk, calculated by log-binomial model. However, for common events, the odds ratio misleads the exposition risk. The aims are to identify independent predictors of mortality in high-risk CDH, using the log-binomial model and disclose if the exposition risks could differ applying in compar

Statistical Physics Approaches to Adsorption Isotherm Models: A Review.

The present review critically examines the application of statistical physics to the development and interpretation of adsorption isotherm models, with particular emphasis on systems relevant to wastewater treatment. Rather than describing adsorption solely through empirical uptake curves, statistical physics provides a molecular-level framework that connects equilibrium adsorption data to descriptors of steric effects, energetic heterogeneity, and thermodynamic behavior. The models reviewed encompass monolayer, multilayer, single-solute, competitive, binary, ternary, and quaternary adsorption

Machine Learning and Statistical Models to Predict Postpartum Hemorrhage.

OBJECTIVE: To predict a woman's risk of postpartum hemorrhage at labor admission using machine learning and statistical models. METHODS: Predictive models were constructed and compared using data from 10 of 12 sites in the U.S. Consortium for Safe Labor Study (2002-2008) that consistently reported estimated blood loss at delivery. The outcome was postpartum hemorrhage, defined as an estimated blood loss at least 1,000 mL. Fifty-five candidate risk factors routinely available on labor admission were considered. We used logistic regression with and without lasso regularization (lasso regression

Virtual reconstruction of midface defects using statistical shape models.

PURPOSE: This study evaluates the accuracy of a statistical shape model (SSM) for virtual fracture reconstruction of the lateral midface. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A uniform bony defect of the right zygoma was created. A virtual reconstruction was performed by using the standard procedure of mirroring the unaffected to the affected side (Group I) and by using the statistical model based on 178 pathologically unaffected CT scans (Group II). The accuracy of the statistical shape model was evaluated in comparison to the present mirroring protocol. The reconstructed region was compared with the orig

Huffman and linear scanning methods with statistical language models.

Current scanning access methods for text generation in AAC devices are limited to relatively few options, most notably row/column variations within a matrix. We present Huffman scanning, a new method for applying statistical language models to binary-switch, static-grid typing AAC interfaces, and compare it to other scanning options under a variety of conditions. We present results for 16 adults without disabilities and one 36-year-old man with locked-in syndrome who presents with complex communication needs and uses AAC scanning devices for writing. Vibe Coding for Statistical Analysis Using Large Language Models.

BACKGROUND: Large language models have accelerated the adoption of generative artificial intelligence (AI), making AI tools more widely accessible through conversational prompting. One emerging application is vibe coding, in which users use natural-language prompts to generate code and desired outputs rather than manually writing traditional code. OBJECTIVE: To examine AI-assisted, human-in-the-loop (HITL) vibe coding as a proof of concept for data analysis, describe its components and a proposed workflow with explicit safeguards, and present a case study illustrating its use and potential fa

Longitudinal models of skill development: conceptual and statistical considerations.

Several conceptual and statistical decisions must be considered when estimating longitudinal models of skill development. Conceptual decisions refer to how skill development processes are hypothesized to influence one another over the developmental period of focus. Statistical decisions are primarily related to how to rule out confounding explanations (i.e., in efforts to provide stronger causal inference) and how to account for between- and within-person variation over time. Statistical considerations typically receive greater attention, but the current study aims to bring complementary focus

Statistical models for the control phase of clinical monitoring.

The rise in the prevalence of chronic conditions means that these are now the leading causes of death and disability worldwide, accounting for almost 60% of all deaths and 43% of the global burden of disease. Management of chronic conditions requires both effective treatment and ongoing monitoring. Although costs related to monitoring are substantial, there is relatively little evidence on its effectiveness. Monitoring is inherently different to diagnosis in its use of regularly repeated tests, and increasing frequency can result in poorer rather than better statistical properties because of m

Statistical inference on change points in generalized semiparametric segmented models.

The segmented model has significant applications in scientific research when the change-point effect exists. In this article, we propose a comprehensive semiparametric framework in segmented models to test the existence and estimate the location of change points in the generalized outcome setting. The proposed framework is based on a semismooth estimating equation for the change-point estimation and an average score-type test for hypothesis testing. The root-n consistency, asymptotic normality, and asymptotic efficiency of estimators for all parameters in the segmented model are rigorously stu

3D biplanar reconstruction of lower limbs using nonlinear statistical models.

Three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of lower limbs is of great interest in surgical planning, computer assisted surgery, and for biomechanical applications. The use of 3D imaging modalities such as computed tomography (CT) scan and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has limitations such as high radiation and expense. Therefore, three-dimensional reconstruction methods from biplanar X-ray images represent an attractive alternative. In this paper, we present a new unsupervised 3D reconstruction method for the patella, talus, and pelvis using calibrated biplanar (45- and 135-degree oblique) radio

Integrating a functional view on suicide risk into idiographic statistical models.

Acute risk of death by suicide manifests in heightened suicidal ideation in certain contexts and time periods. These increases are thought to emerge from complex and mutually reinforcing relationships between dispositional vulnerability factors and individually suicidogenic short-term stressors. Together, these processes inform clinical safety planning and our therapeutic tools accommodate a reasonable degree of idiosyncrasy when we individualize interventions. Unraveling these multifaceted factors and processes on a quantitative level, however, requires estimation frameworks capable of repres

Statistical performance evaluation of biometric authentication systems using random effects models.

As biometric authentication systems become more prevalent, it is becoming increasingly important to evaluate their performance. This paper introduces a novel statistical method of performance evaluation for these systems. Given a database of authentication results from an existing system, the method uses a hierarchical random effects model, along with Bayesian inference techniques yielding posterior predictive distributions, to predict performance in terms of error rates using various explanatory variables. By incorporating explanatory variables as well as random effects, the method allows for

Phase transitions and finite-size effects in integrable virial statistical models.

We analyze thermodynamic models for fluid systems in equilibrium based on a virial expansion of the internal energy in terms of the volume density. We prove that the models, formulated for finite-size systems with N particles, are exactly solvable to any expansion order, as expectation values of physical observables (e.g., volume density) are determined from solutions to nonlinear C-integrable partial differential equations (PDEs) of hydrodynamic type. In the limit N→∞, phase transitions emerge as classical shock waves in the space of thermodynamic variables. Near critical points, we argue tha
