BACKGROUND: Over the last two decades, a significant spread of dirofilariasis has been observed in eastern and central Europe. However, data on the circulation of Dirofilaria spp. in Moldova were absent although direct neighbor states reported high incidence rates of human dirofilariasis.
METHODS: Daily mean temperature data were used to calculate Dirofilaria spp. development units, which were used to estimate the potential for complete extrinsic development in the mosquitoes (= sum of potential Dirofilaria spp. transmission days). In addition, 4,481 adult female mosquitoes were collected fro

BACKGROUND: Moldova experienced a nationwide mumps outbreak between 2007 and 2008. Single-dose monovalent mumps vaccination at 15 to 18 months was introduced in 1983, replaced by a 2-dose MMR schedule at age 1 and 6 to 7 years in 2002. We investigated the outbreak to quantify its extent, explore the role of primary and secondary vaccine failure, and provide control recommendations.
METHODS: We analyzed national mumps surveillance and vaccination coverage data to estimate vaccine effectiveness (VE) using the screening method. A retrospective cohort study in 5 educational institutions was condu

Organ trafficking is an illegal means of meeting the shortage of transplants. The activity flourishes for several interacting reasons, such as medical needs, poverty and criminality. Other factors are fundamental conceptual structures such as the dream of the regenerative body as well as the view of the body as an object of utility and an object of value. The article aims to go behind the normative discussions that usually surround organ trafficking. Why this is happening, and what the societal consequences are, is examined through ethnographic fieldwork. The focus is on the shadow economies t

Abortion has been available legally in Moldova since 1955, and since then the abortion rate has gradually declined. The quality of abortion care remains low, however, and there is a high level of maternal mortality related to unsafe abortion. The goals of the 2005-2015 National Reproductive Health Strategy are to reduce unwanted pregnancy, reduce abortion-related morbidity and mortality, improve access to and quality of abortion care, including the methods of vacuum aspiration and medical abortion. This paper presents information on the current abortion law, policy and services in Moldova. It

BACKGROUND: Countries of eastern Europe are considered, due to several risk factors, more vulnerable to infections with newly (re)emerging pathogens. During the last decade, in several European countries, reports of autochthonous cases of ocular thelaziosis due to Thelazia callipaeda have been published, posing a great concern from both veterinary and public health perspective. However, in the Republic of Moldova only limited epidemiological data are available regarding zoonotic vector-borne pathogens and, until now, no data exist on the zoonotic nematode T. callipaeda.
METHODS: In September

In 1994-1996, the Republic of Moldova was stricken with an epidemic of diphtheria after >30 years of routine diphtheria immunization and the near absence of the disease for nearly 20 years. The intensity of the epidemic gradually grew, reaching a peak in 1994-1995. The epidemiology of diphtheria in Moldova during this period is described along with laboratory findings and control measures. Pharyngeal diphtheria was the predominant clinical form of the disease (97% of cases), and it most often developed in a localized form (70%), with 20% in the toxic form. The clinical diagnosis of diphtheria

The Republic of Moldova undertook reforms in tuberculosis (TB) control and health care consistent with international recommendations and advanced towards the global target for case detection. The number of TB cases notified increased overall by 50% during 2001-2005. Expansion of the DOTS strategy and full coverage coincided with a greater role for primary health care (PHC) in TB control and the advent of national insurance for TB diagnosis and treatment. These developments and improvements in laboratories, surveillance, medical personnel skills, and public awareness contributed to increased ca

Antimicrobial-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae poses a global threat to human, animal, and environmental health. The challenges of AMR surveillance have led to the development of advanced molecular biology techniques, such as genomic sequencing, to identify the resistance gene diversity and the factors contributing to the AMR emergence and spreading. In this study, a total of 99 Klebsiella pneumoniae strains suspected of producing ESBL or carbapenemases were collected between January 2020 and December 2023 from nine hospital laboratories, predominantly from hospital-associated infections/isolat

Although the Republic of Moldova had good vaccination rates, anti-vax messages have recently begun to spread, eroding the population's confidence. Vaccination coverage against measles, mumps, and rubella at the target age of 12 months decreased from 95% in 2008 to 83% in 2021. The recent measles outbreak in Romania and three confirmed cases in Moldova, combined with the refugee crisis, have highlighted the importance of vaccination and sparked online conversations on this subject. A mixed-methods study was conducted, involving social listening activities on immunization using the Talkwalker so

The present study aimed to evaluate the extent of Dirofilaria immitis and D. repens exposure in humans from eastern and southern areas of Romania and central Moldova by serological methods. The serological screening was performed on a total of 450 serum samples (187 from Romania and 263 from Moldova). The sera were collected using a convenience sampling with the help of physicians from the hospitals of the study areas. All samples were analysed by a non-commercial ELISA test for the detection of IgG antibodies against adult somatic antigens of D. immitis and D. repens. The results showed a tot

INTRODUCTION: Injuries represent a major public health issue, causing approximately 16,000 deaths globally each day (10% of all deaths), which is 32% more than the combined total caused by malaria, tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS. Over the past 15 years, the WHO and regional initiatives have supported the piloting of trauma registries in low- and middle-income countries as essential tools for monitoring, planning, and prevention.
OBJECTIVE: This article aims to assess the feasibility and utility of implementing a national trauma registry in the Republic of Moldova, in order to improve injury surve

During the 2023-2024 influenza season, the Republic of Moldova, a lower-middle income country seeking accession into the European Union, independently financed their influenza vaccine supply transitioning from external support from the Partnership for International Vaccine Initiatives, a collaboration conceived in 2015. As part of this transition, a mixed-methods evaluation was conducted from May 2023 - January 2024 to identify current strengths and weaknesses of the influenza vaccination program. A total of 157 interviews were conducted: one with the National Immunization Program (NIP), six w

The Echinococcus granulosus tapeworm is responsible for cystic echinococcosis (CE), a zoonotic disease with worldwide distribution. The life cycle of the parasite is mainly domestic and takes place between dogs and livestock species. A slaughterhouse survey was conducted in 2012 in the Republic of Moldova in order to estimate the prevalence of CE. A total of 1525 cattle, 5580 sheep and 12,700 pigs were surveyed. No CE infection was observed in pigs, while prevalence was estimated at 59.3% in cattle and 61.9% in sheep. Infection was significantly higher in animals raised in private households t
