Journal of evidence-based integrative medicine2018eng
BACKGROUND: Montanoa frutescens and Montanoa grandiflora have been indistinctly used for centuries in traditional Mexican medicine for reproductive impairments, anxiety, and mood disorders. Preclinical studies support their aphrodisiac and anxiolytic properties, but their effects on mood are still unexplored.
METHODS: The effects of 25 and 50 mg/kg of M frutescens and M grandiflora extracts were evaluated on days 1, 7, 14, 21, and 28 of treatment, and compared with fluoxetine (1 mg/kg) and Remotiv (7.14 mg/kg) in Wistar rats. The participation of GABAA receptor in the effects produced by the

Montanoa tomentosa has been used in Mexican traditional medicine as a labor inducer and contraceptive, as well as for the treatment of pain after childbirth. In this sense, M. tomentosa is an important source of metabolites with potent anti-inflammatory activity. The objective of this work was to evaluate the anti-inflammatory activity of extracts: n-hexane (MtHex), ethyl acetate (MtAc), and methanol (MtMe), and compounds isolated from leaves of M. tomentosa. The anti-inflammatory effect was evaluated in the 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA)-induced ear edema model in mice. The compou

Freshly prepared aqueous decocts of the Mexican plant Montanoa tomentosa (Zoapatle) were administered orally to six women in the early stages of pregnancy for two days prior to the interruption of gestation by vacuum aspiration. The daily dose administered varied between 1.0 and 1.4 gm-equivalent of dry leaves per kilogram of body weight. A comparable control group of six pregnant women received the same volume of commercial tea according to the same schedule before vacuum aspiration. Administration of Zoapatle extracts resulted in a menstrual-like cramp and a significant dilatation of the cer

Yucuyahui (zoapatle-Montanoa tomentosa), is a wild herb used as a folk oxytocic-remedy. Eight pregnant women drank infusions of the herb during the labor and their newborns showed cardiorespiratory depression that needs basic or advanced life support to recover. They improved during the first minutes with an average Apgar score at one minute of 4.5, and 7.4 at ten minutes (p < 0.05). A negative correlation was found between the number of ingested infusions and the Apgar score at the one minute (r = -0.65). Simultaneous administration of alcoholic beverages in three of the pregnant woman did no

Plants long employed in traditional medicine remain promising yet underexplored sources of antioxidant compounds. Montanoa bipinnatifida C. Koch, native to southern Mexico, is one such species with a largely uncharacterized chemical profile. In this study, a hydroethanolic of Montanoa bipinnatifida C. Koch leaf extract (MB-LE) was prepared via maceration with 70% ethanol, yielding 18% (w/w), and subsequently analyzed using spectroscopic and metabolomic approaches. UV-Vis and FTIR spectra revealed a chemically diverse matrix enriched in phenolic and nitrogen-containing constituents. High-resolu

BACKGROUND: Montanoa grandiflora, a plant species native from Mexico to Central America, locally known as "Teresita" in Yucatán, México, is used to alleviate anxiety, rheumatism, and stomach issues. This study aims to investigate the anti-inflammatory properties of the methanol extract of Montanoa grandiflora leaves (MMG) in experimental models of inflammation.
METHODS: Gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy was used to characterize the MMG; cytotoxicity was assessed by MTT assay on murine macrophages and hemolysis assay. The in vitro anti-inflammatory activity was evaluated on LPS-stimulated m

Ancient cultures have long studied plants for medicinal use. Today, multidisciplinary research focuses on re-evaluating these plants to discover drugs for treating various diseases, including psychiatric disorders. Pre-Columbian Mesoamerican cultures described three plants (Montanoa tomentosa, Montanoa frutescens, and Montanoa grandiflora) for treating both anxiety and depression disorders, which were called cihuapahtli in Nahuatl. This narrative review describes and analyzes the ethnobotanical use and phytochemical, pharmacological, behavioral, and toxicological effects of cihuapahtli, which

Background/Objectives: Ethanol-induced gastric injury is a widely used experimental model for evaluating gastroprotective interventions because it reproduces key features of gastric mucosal damage, including oxidative stress, lipid peroxidation, inflammation, and epithelial disruption. Previous phytochemical characterization of Montanoa bipinnatifida leaves revealed a rich profile of bioactive polyphenols with antioxidant potential. Therefore, this study investigated the gastroprotective effects of a hydroethanolic leaf extract of M. bipinnatifida in female CD-1 mice subjected to ethanol-induc

Throughout colonial history, botanical exploration expanded Western scientific knowledge while reinforcing systems of control, particularly through the erasure of plant knowledge regarding human reproduction issues. Abortifacients, long used by Black and Indigenous communities for fertility regulation and abortion, was among the areas for which traditional knowledge was most frequently silenced. These plants enabled reproductive autonomy and disrupted the colonial agenda of controlling laboring bodies. This synthesis draws heavily from Mexican ethnobotanical practices, and pays equal attention

The zoapatle aqueous crude extract has been used in Mexico for the last 5 centuries for the induction of labor, treatment of post-partum bleeding problems, and as a menses inducer. Today, it is sold in street markets, and its long documented history of use by humans could be taken as indirect evidence of a lack of toxicity. Rigorous pharmacological and clinical studies described here, fully confirm the empirical observations.

In vitro histamine response in rat and guinea pig uterine strips was similar to the one observed with zoapatle aqueous crude extract (ZACE). The relaxing effect elicited by ZACE/tomentosa on the in vitro rat uterine strips was not mediated by activation of H-2 histamine receptors; moreover, the increase on uterine contractility elicited by ZACE/tomentosa on the in vitro guinea pig uterine strip was not mediated through the activation of H-1 histamine receptors.

A low piperine fractional Piper nigrum extract (PFPE) was prepared by mixing cold-pressed coconut oil and honey in distilled water, namely, PFPE-CH. In this study, PFPE-CH was orally administered as a dietary supplement to decrease the risk of tumor formation and reduce the side effects of chemotherapeutic drugs during breast cancer treatment. The toxicity study demonstrated no mortality or adverse effects after administrating PFPE-CH at 5000 mg/kg during a 14-day observation period. Additionally, PFPE-CH at 86 mg/kg BW/day did not cause any harm to the kidney or liver function of the rats for
