There is a significant debate over the moral status of human embryos. This debate has important implications for practices like abortion and IVF. Some argue that embryos have the same moral status as infants, children, and adults. However, critics claim that the frequency of pregnancy loss/miscarriage/spontaneous abortion shows a moral inconsistency in this view. One line of criticism is that those who know the facts about pregnancy loss and nevertheless attempt to conceive children are willing to sacrifice embryos lost for the healthy children they ultimately have. I respond to this criticism

Prabhpal Singh has recently defended a relational account of the difference in moral status between fetuses and newborns as a way of explaining why abortion is permissible and infanticide is not. He claims that only a newborn can stand in a parent-child relation, not a fetus, and this relation has a moral dimension that bestows moral value. We challenge Singh's reasoning, arguing that the case he presents is unconvincing. We suggest that the parent-child relation is better understood as an extension of an existing relationship formed during the gestational period. The change in this relation a

Ethical deliberations are unfolding for potentially controversial organoid-entities such as brain organoids and embryoids. Much of the ethical deliberation centers on the questionable moral status of such organoid-entities. However, while such work is important and appropriate, ethical deliberations may become too exclusively rooted in moral status and potentially overshadow other relevant moral dilemmas. The ethical discussion on organoid models can benefit from insights brought forth by both Judith Jarvis Thomson and Don Marquis in how they attempted to advance the abortion debate. To discus

UK bio-law is praised for its pragmatic governance of ethically contested practices, especially embryo research, where the post-Warnock settlement regulates conduct through licensing, oversight, and the 14-day or primitive streak rule without resolving moral-status disputes. This article argues that this pragmatism exposes a structural incoherence, partly narrowed but not resolved by abortion-law reform. Embryo research law treats the embryo as a procedurally governed object, while abortion law has historically operated through a criminal-exception model under the Offences Against the Person A

In this paper, I argue for an expansion of moral concern in bioethics beyond sentience-based and status-based frameworks. Drawing on Lukács' and Honneth's work on reification, I show that even where the sentience, species membership, or moral status of an entity is unknown, there are compelling ethical reasons to be concerned about the creation, manipulation, and use of such entities. I reconceive reification not just as a social pathology but as a moral vice: a disordered, objectifying mode of perception. Understood in this way, reification provides a flexible normative framework that applies

In this paper, I suggest that, if we are committed to accepting a threshold approach to personhood, according to which all beings above the threshold are persons with equal moral status, there are strong reasons to also recognise a second threshold that would be reached through human pregnancy, and that would confer on pregnant women a temporary superior moral status. This proposal is not based on the moral status of the fetus, but on the moral status of the pregnant woman. It is not only the fetus which is an organism sui generis: the pregnant woman, also, is a unique being. Following almost

The antiabortion movement is increasingly using ostensibly scientific measurements such as 'fetal heartbeat' and 'fetal pain' to provide 'objective' evidence of the moral status of fetuses. However, there is little knowledge on how clinicians conceptualise and operationalise the moral status of fetuses. We interviewed obstetrician/gynaecologists and neonatologists on this topic since their practice regularly includes clinical management of entities of the same gestational age. Contrary to our expectations, there was consensus among clinicians about conceptions of moral status regardless of spe

Persons of low socioeconomic status generally experience worse health and shorter lives than their better off counterparts. They also suffer a greater incidence of adverse psychosocial characteristics, such as low self-esteem, self-efficacy, and self-mastery and increased cynicism and hostility. These population data suggest another category of harm to persons: diminished moral agency. Chronic socioeconomic deprivation can create environments that undermine the development of self and capacities constitutive to moral agency--i.e., the capacity for self-determination and crafting a life of one'

Judith Jarvis Thomson famously argued that abortion is permissible even if we accept that a fetus qualifies as a person and possesses a right to life. The current paper presents two arguments that undermine Thomson's position. First, the paper sketches a contractarian argument that explores Thomson's violinist thought experiment from behind a veil of ignorance, which suggests that if we had an equal likelihood of being an unwanted fetus and a pregnant woman, it would be rational for us to oppose abortion. Second, the paper discusses the hypothetical self-aborting fetus, a thought experiment th

This study examines the intergenerational transfer of the genocidal trauma of the Holodomor (1932-33) and explores how marital status moderates its impact on moral injury and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in the context of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. Moral injury, distinct from PTSD, arises from the violation of moral beliefs, leading to emotional distress characterised by guilt, shame, anger, disgust and a sense of betrayal. While previous research predominantly focused on direct survivors of genocide, this study expands the understanding of moral injury to their descendants, part

BACKGROUND: Moral courage is crucial for nurses to act ethically despite professional risks. Operating room (OR) nurses frequently encounter ethical dilemmas, requiring a balance between personal convictions and institutional policies. This study investigates the current status of moral courage among OR nurses in Southwest China and explores key influencing factors.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The cross-sectional, multi-center study was conducted from April to May 2024. A total of 482 operating room nurses from 16 hospitals in Southwest China were surveyed. The nurses were assessed using a self-de

According to Mark Johnston's Personite Problem, Perdurantism-the view that persons are maximal fusions of person-stages-should be rejected, as it fails to account for the moral status of non-maximal fusions that overlap a person (personites). His Duplication Argument claims that personites have persons as duplicates in other metaphysically possible worlds. Since duplicates share all intrinsic descriptive properties, they must share normative ones, including moral status. I challenge this by accepting Johnston's duplication claim but rejecting its moral conclusion. Perdurantists can respond by

Philosophy has long been concerned with 'moral status'. Discussions about the moral status of children, however, seem often to promote confusion rather than clarity. Using the creation of 'savior siblings' as an example, this paper provides a philosophical critique of the moral status of children and the moral relevance of parenting and the role that formative experience, regret and relational autonomy play in parental decisions. We suggest that parents make moral decisions that are guided by the moral significance they attach to children, to sick children and most importantly, to a specific s

PURPOSE: Moral distress is a pervasive challenge in nursing and has been associated with burnout, job dissatisfaction, and turnover. Although Magnet Recognition has been associated with more favorable nursing practice environments and nurse outcomes, little is known about the association between Magnet status and nurses' experiences of moral distress or the role of leadership responsiveness in this association. This study examined whether management responsiveness to patient care concerns accounted for part of the association between hospital Magnet status and nurse moral distress.

Many people believe human fetuses have the same moral status as adult human persons, that it is wrong to allow harm to befall things with this moral status, and thus voluntary, induced abortion is seriously morally wrong. Recently, many prochoice theorists have argued that this antiabortion stance is inconsistent; approximately 60% of human fetuses die from spontaneous abortion, far more than die from induced abortion, so if antiabortion theorists really believe that human fetuses have significant moral status, they have strong moral obligations to oppose spontaneous abortion. Yet, few antiabo

We are sometimes unsure of the moral status of our relationships with other entities. Recent case studies in this uncertainty include our relationships with artificial agents (robots, assistant AI, etc.), animals, and patients with "locked-in" syndrome. Do these entities have basic moral standing? Could they count as true friends or lovers? What should we do when we do not know the answer to these questions? An influential line of reasoning suggests that, in such cases of moral uncertainty, we need meta-moral decision rules that allow us to either minimize the risks of moral wrongdoing or impr

This exploratory and descriptive qualitative case study examined how religious beliefs shaped decision-making and emotional experiences in a couple facing infertility who re-fused assisted reproductive technologies (ART), with partic-ular attention to moral distress concerning embryo status and the psychosocial implications of treatment refusal. Psy-chological follow-up in the context of reproductive counseling involved a heterosexual couple and a potential gestational carrier. Data were obtained from semi-structured interviews and projective graphic techniques within the House-Tree-Person fra
