Nasibacterium caprae gen. nov., sp. nov., isolated from a goat with respiratory disease.

A Gram-stain-negative, aerobic and rod-shaped bacteria, designated ZY210820T, was isolated from the nasal cavity of a goat with respiratory disease in Yunnan Province, PR China. The strain grew at pH 6.0-9.0 (optimum pH 7.0), at 24-39 °C (optimum 37 °C) and with 0.5-2.0% (w/v) NaCl (optimum 1.0% NaCl). Phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the strain formed a separated branch within the family Moraxellaceae with the highest similarity of 93.1% to Acinetobacter kanungonis JCM 34131T. Phylogenomic analysis of 327 single-copy protein sequences revealed that the strain belon

36 Cornea microbiology contamination rate depending on post mortem time, retrospective analysis at croatian tissue and cell bank, UHC Zagreb.

BACKGROUND: Corneas procured post mortem are at risk of microbiology contamination, therefore decontamination procedures before storage, aseptic techniques during processing and antimicrobials used in the storage medium are routinely used. Despite that, corneas are discarded due to microbiology contamination. According to professional guidelines, corneas can be procured preferably within 24 hours after cardiac arrest but up to 48 hours. Our goal was to evaluate the risk of contamination depending on the post mortem time and the spectrum of microbes isolated. METHODS: Corneas were decontaminat

Moraxella lacunata infection associated with septicemia, endocarditis, and bilateral septic arthritis in a patient undergoing hemodialysis: a case report and review of the literature.

We report the first case of both endocarditis and bilateral septic arthritis in a patient caused by Moraxella lacunata and successful management of the infection with antimicrobial therapy. The route of entry leading to bacteremia may have been the oral cavity given the poor oral hygiene of the patient as evidenced by bleeding gums. We hypothesize that the bacteremia led to septic arthritis and mitral valve infective endocarditis. In this case report, we also review the literature on M. lacunata infections and conclude that this organism should be considered in bilateral septic arthritis in a

Development of the Tonsil Microbiome in Pigs and Effects of Stress on the Microbiome.

Tonsils, lympho-epithelial tissues located at the junction of the oropharynx and nasopharynx, play a key role in surveillance, colonization, and persistence of inhaled and ingested pathogens. In pigs, the tonsils are a reservoir for numerous bacteria and viruses, including host-specific pathogens and potential zoonotic pathogens as well as commensal organisms. However, there are no in depth studies of the development of the tonsillar microbiome in pigs, or any mammal, over time. The goal of this study was to follow the development of the tonsil microbiome in healthy pigs from birth to market w

Identification and characterisation of a biosynthetic locus for Moraxella bovis lipo-oligosaccharide.

Moraxella bovis is a Gram-negative gammaproteobacterium and is one of the causative agents of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis. The structure of lipooligosaccharide (LOS) from strain Epp63 was recently elucidated. In the present study a genetic locus of seven encoding genes with high similarity to glycosyltransferases has been identified. Mutation of these putative glycosyltransferase genes resulted in M. bovis mutant bacteria that expressed truncated LOS structures. The structures of the oligosaccharide (OS) expressed by the mutant strains were elucidated and demonstrated the role of th

Structural characterisation of the oligosaccharide from Moraxella bovoculi type strain 237 (ATCC BAA-1259) lipooligosaccharide.

The Gram-negative bacterium Moraxella bovoculi is associated with infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK), colloquially known as 'pink-eye'. IBK is an extremely contagious ocular disease of cattle. We report here the structure of the oligosaccharide derived from the lipooligosaccharide from M. bovoculi type strain 237 (also known as ATCC BAA-1259T). GLC-MS and correlation NMR analysis of the oligosaccharide revealed 5 sugar residues, with a notable central branched 3,4,6-α-D-Glcp. An additional α-D-Manp was present ~30% on the sub-terminal α-D-Manp of the 4-linked branch. This oligosaccha

The microbiome of the soft palate of swine.

The tonsil of the soft palate in pigs is a secondary lymphoid tissue that provides a first line of defense against foreign antigens entering by the mouth or nares. It has been known for a long time to be the site of colonization of important swine and zoonotic bacterial pathogens. Initially our understanding of microbes present at this site came from culture-based studies. Very recently, sequence-based approaches have been used to identify the core microbiome of the swine tonsil. Although animal to animal and herd to herd variation was detected in these studies, >90 of the organisms detected b

Psychrobacter piechaudii shunt infection: first report of human infection.

Psychrobacter piechaudii is a recently described species of Gram-negative bacteria in the Moraxellaceae family. No cases of human infection due to this species have been described before. We report the case of an ex-premature infant girl with hydrocephalus secondary to intraventricular haemorrhage who underwent multiple cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) shunt operations. She ultimately developed Psychrobacter piechaudii meningitis, presenting as ventriculoperitoneal shunt dysfunction and wound leak, which necessitated removal of the shunt, a period of external ventricular drainage and antibiotics. The molecular mechanism of Zinc acquisition by the neisserial outer-membrane transporter ZnuD.

Invading bacteria from the Neisseriaceae, Acinetobacteriaceae, Bordetellaceae and Moraxellaceae families express the conserved outer-membrane zinc transporter zinc-uptake component D (ZnuD) to overcome nutritional restriction imposed by the host organism during infection. Here we demonstrate that ZnuD is required for efficient systemic infections by the causative agent of bacterial meningitis, Neisseria meningitidis, in a mouse model. We also combine X-ray crystallography and molecular dynamics simulations to gain insight into the mechanism of zinc recognition and transport across the bacteria

Sialic acid exacerbates gut dysbiosis-associated mastitis through the microbiota-gut-mammary axis by fueling gut microbiota disruption.

BACKGROUND: Mastitis is one of the most severe diseases in humans and animals, especially on dairy farms. Mounting evidence indicates that gastrointestinal dysbiosis caused by induction of subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA) by high-grain diet consumption and low in dietary fiber is associated with mastitis initiation and development, however, the underlying mechanism remains unknown. RESULTS: In the present study, we found that cows with SARA-associated mastitis have altered metabolic profiles in the rumen, with increased sialic acids level in particular. Consumption of sialic acid (SA) in anti

First report of Neoscytalidium dimidiatum as the causal agent of leaf blight on Clivia miniata.

In this survey, the symptomatic leaves of Clivia miniata were collected from a greenhouse in Karaj city of Iran. The isolation and morphological investigation showed Scytalidium-like fungus associated with leaf blight symptom. The phylogenetic analysis of the internal transcribed spacer along with partial sequences of rDNA large subunit and translation elongation factor 1-α (tef-1α) genomic regions confirmed the identification of the recovered isolate as Neoscytalidium dimidiatum. The pycnidial morph of the fungus didn't observe both in vitro and in vivo. The pathogenicity test on C. miniata a

Laryngotracheal Microbiota in Adult Laryngotracheal Stenosis.

Laryngotracheal stenosis is an obstructive respiratory disease that leads to voicing difficulties and dyspnea with potential life-threatening consequences. The majority of incidences are due to iatrogenic etiology from endotracheal tube intubation; however, airway scarring also has idiopathic causes. While recent evidence suggests a microbial contribution to mucosal inflammation, the microbiota associated with different types of stenosis has not been characterized. High-throughput sequencing of the V4 region of the16S rRNA gene was performed to characterize the microbial communities of 61 swab

Moraxella (Branhamella) catarrhalis--clinical and molecular aspects of a rediscovered pathogen.

Since its discovery at the end of the nineteenth century, Moraxella (Branhamella) catarrhalis has undergone several changes of nomenclature and periodic changes in its perceived status as either a commensal or a pathogen. Molecular analysis based on DNA hybridisation or 16S rDNA sequence comparisons has established its phylogenetic position as a member of the Moraxellaceae and shown that it is related more closely to Acinetobacter spp. than to the genus Neisseria in which it was placed formerly. However, confusion with phenotypically similar Neisseria spp. can occur in the routine diagnostic l

Assessing resistome host range across water reclamation in three geographically distinct communities using Hi-C sequencing.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing problem, with annual deaths set to pass 10 million by 2050 if current trends continue. Sequencing untreated wastewater has been proposed as a strategy to understand population-level resistance, and water reclamation facilities (WRFs) have been identified as a control point for environmental dissemination of resistant bacteria. Understanding AMR dynamics across WRFs can provide insight into how WRFs may alter the resistome and requires advanced molecular tools that elucidate host bacteria, especially for mobile resistance carried on plasmids. To that

Isolation of Moraxella spp. strains in horses.

Two species of Moraxella were isolated from swabs obtained from two symptomatic horses suffering from conjunctivitis and rhinitis. The isolates were identified via MALDI-TOF as Moraxella osloensis and Moraxella equi respectively, with a good genus identification and a probable species identification score. The first one was also confirmed by BLAST sequence analysis with a high homology (99%). Antimicrobial susceptibility testing obtained by minimum inhibitory concentration method showed that the two isolates were sensitive to all the tested molecules. The therapeutic protocols applied had an e

A rare case of acute meningitis caused by Moraxella osloensis.

Meningitis caused by Moraxella osloensis is rare and easily misdiagnosed clinically. Here, we report the first case of meningitis caused by M. osloensis in China by taking advantage of the metagenomic next-generation sequencing technology in cerebrospinal fluid for pathogen screening. In addition, we extend the neurological signs, clinical symptoms, diagnostic methods, and treatment of this rare disease.

Isolation of Moraxella spp. from horses with conjunctivitis in Southern Brazil.

Infectious keratoconjunctivitis (IKC) is the most frequent ocular disease in livestock worldwide and is primarily caused by Moraxella bovis, M. ovis, and/or M. bovoculi. The economic impact of IKC is mainly due to ocular damage, which leads to weight loss, management difficulties, pain and discomfort, and cost of treatments. In horses, limited information is available on the association of Moraxella spp. with keratoconjunctivitis. The present report describes two cases of equine keratoconjunctivitis caused by members of the genus Moraxella. Both animals presented with lacrimation, conjunctivit
