We describe a case of a prostatic abscess (PA) caused by Morganella morganii (M. morganii). The patient was a 71-year-old immunocompetent man who was hospitalized due to lumbar surgery. A urethral catheter was placed perioperatively. On postoperative day (POD) 6, the patient developed a fever of 38.5°C, elevated inflammatory markers including leukocytosis and C-reactive protein, and pyuria. Blood and urine cultures were positive for M. morganii. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed a hypodense area in the prostate, consistent with PA. The patient was treated with levofloxacin, and hi

The aim of this study was the evaluation of the antimicrobial sensitive of Morganella morganii rods isolated from clinical samples. This study included 50 of M. morganii strains isolated in the Clinical Microbiology Department of dr. A. Jurasz University Hospital in 2008-2009. All of strains were sensitive to carbapenems (imipenem, meropenem, ertapenem, doripenem) and piperacillin/tazobactam and most of them to beta-lactam antibiotics, aminoglycosides and fluorochinolons. Resistance to tetracyclines demonstrated 38,0% strains and to doxycycline - 40,0%. One out of 6 strains isolated from urine

A 2 day-old-girl with a complicated birth history, including prolonged rupture of membranes and Caesarian section delivery, presented with a purulent bacterial conjunctivitis of the left eye despite standard prophylaxis. Bacterial cultures yielded 1+ Morganella morganii, a facultative anaerobe and a rare cause of ocular pathology. The patient was treated with topical tobramycin four times daily for 7 days, resulting in resolution of her conjunctivitis.

Morganella morganii is a facultative gram-negative and anaerobic rod. It may be a cause of devastating infections in neonates and immunocompromised hosts. Some bacterial infections such as Clostridium and Vibrio are associated with hemolysis. However, massive hemolysis caused by M. morganii sepsis has not yet been reported. We observed a 59-yr-old man who had chemotherapy-induced neutropenia and was found to have massive hemolysis and metabolic acidosis due to sepsis. He died 6 hr after admission in spite of aggressive treatment. Two sets of blood cultures revealed the growth of M. morganii. W

Morganella morganii belongs to the tribe Proteeae of the Enterobacteriaceae family. This species is considered as an unusual opportunistic pathogen that mainly causes post-operative wound and urinary tract infections. However, certain clinical M. morganii isolates present resistance to multiple antibiotics by carrying various resistant genes (such as blaNDM-1, and qnrD1), thereby posing a serious challenge for clinical infection control. Moreover, virulence evolution makes M. morganii an important pathogen. Accumulated data have demonstrated that M. morganii can cause various infections, such

The frequency of enterobacterial isolates with high resistance to expanded-spectrum beta-lactam antibiotics (mainly cefotaxime or ceftriaxone) has increased notoriously in Argentina, mainly because of the spread of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases. The aim of this work was the study of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases in several Morganella morganii isolates with unusually high resistance to ceftriaxone. These strains produced at least two beta-lactamases, of apparent pIs of 5.4 and 8.2, molecular weight 23 000, well inhibited by clavulanate, compatible with a broad-spectrum beta-lactamase -

BACKGROUND While uncommon, iliopsoas abscesses can become the underlying cause of a fever of unknown origin. Even in such cases, it is considered rare for an iliopsoas abscess to extend into the subcutaneous space. CASE REPORT A 74-year-old woman with a history of schizophrenia was referred to our hospital with a high-grade fever. The patient was unaware of her febrile status prior to admission. There was no previous hospital admission. Examination revealed a non-tender mass in the lower right back that the patient had been aware of for approximately 1 month. Initially, we considered a subcuta

Tubo-ovarian abscess caused by Morganella morganii is unusual. A 54-year-old menopausal woman visited the emergency room with lower abdominal pain, vomiting, and fever for 4 days. Pelvic examination revealed lifting tenderness over the right adnexum without motion tenderness of the uterus. Pelvic sonogram revealed a cystic lesion with heterogeneous content in the right ovary. Salpingo-oophoritis was suspected. Clindamycin and gentamicin were administered intravenously after obtaining blood cultures. Laparoscopy was done because of sustained fever, and an ovarian abscess was found. Laparoscopic

UNLABELLED: Morganella morganii is an opportunistic gram-negative bacterium, resistant to ampicillin, and scarcely involved in early-onset neonatal sepsis.
CASE REPORT: After a premature rupture of the membranes, a pregnant patient received prophylactic amoxicillin per os. She developed chorioamnionitis. Her infant was diagnosed with early-onset sepsis. Maternal and baby's blood cultures grew M. morganii. Both the mother and the infant were successfully treated with a third-generation cephalosporin and an aminoglycoside.
DISCUSSION: The influence of a prior antibiotherapy on the emergence of

Although recent reports of extensively antibiotic-resistant strains have highlighted the importance of Morganella morganii as an emerging pathogen, the epidemiology of serious infections due to this organism is not well defined. The objective of this study was to determine the incidence, determinants, and outcomes of Morganella morganii bloodstream infections (BSIs). Retrospective, population-based surveillance for Morganella morganii BSIs was conducted in Queensland, Australia, in 2000 to 2019; 709 cases were identified, for an annual incidence of 9.2 cases per million population. Most cases

Purulent pericarditis caused by Morganella morganii is extremely rare. We report herein a case of a 61-year-old man who presented with chest pain and dyspnea fourteen days after chemotherapy for multiple myeloma. Echocardiogram and computed tomography revealed a massive pericardial effusion and associated cardiac tamponade. Pericardiocentesis was performed. Pericardial fluid was found to be purulent, and Morganella morganii was isolated from the fluid. The patient was successfully treated with antibiotic therapy and surgical drainage of the fluid. Morganella morganii should be considered a pos

A central nervous system infection due to Morganella morganii is uncommon. We report a case diagnosed at the neurological department of Fann teaching hospital in Dakar, Senegal. A 12-year-old boy was hospitalized for acute meningoencephalitis. The CT scan was normal and the study of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) revealed cytological and biochemical abnormalities and M. morganii. HIV and syphilitic serologies were negative and blood CD4 lymphocyte count showed 354 per mm(3). The treatment with cefotaxime associated with gentamicin for 6 weeks was successful. The outcome of infection depends on many

This case report involves a 60-year-old diabetic man who developed septic arthritis as a result of the pathogen Morganella morganii. The patient had complaints of elevated body temperature, malaise, rigors and pain in the left knee, despite no history of trauma. On examination of the knee, erythema, warmth, tenderness and swelling was observed. Arthrocentesis performed on his left knee indicated the presence of straw-coloured, cloudy fluid without crystals. Bacterial identification based on biochemical and automated methods indicated the growth of M morganii. M morganii was also isolated sedim

BACKGROUND: Morganella morganii is a commensal Gram-negative bacillus of the intestinal tract of humans and other mammals and reptiles. Few reports exist in the literature regarding infections caused by this organism.
METHODS: A retrospective study at the 650-bed University Hospital of Heraklion, Crete, Greece was performed during a 4-year period (2001-2004) to identify and analyze infections caused by M. morganii.
RESULTS: Twenty-four patients had M. morganii isolated from clinical specimens during the study period. Thirteen patients (54%) suffered from skin and soft tissue infections, five

Morganella morganii is rarely isolated from nosocomial infections. However, postoperative infections due to Morganella spp. were documented in literature and eye involvements of the infections usually result in severe sequels. We present a severe case infection, which was caused by M. morganii subsp. morganii, firstly appearing as conjunctivitis and complicated by bacteremia. The infectious agent isolated from both conjunctival and consecutive blood cultures. Identification and antimicrobial susceptibility tests were performed with the Vitek 2(®) automated system. The isolate was resistant to

Ludwig's angina is a rapidly spreading and potentially lethal infection involving the floor of the mouth and neck. We present a rare case of Ludwig's angina caused by an unusual microorganism, Morganella morganii, and the group D alpha-hemolytic streptococcus. To our knowledge, this is the first case of Ludwig's angina and deep neck infection caused by Morganella morganii. Adequate airway maintenance, appropriate use of antibiotics and surgical drainage resulted in survival of the patient without complications.

Morganella morganii is an opportunistic bacterial pathogen shown to cause a wide range of clinical and community-acquired infections. This study was aimed at sequencing and comparing the genomes of three M. morganii strains isolated from the urine samples of patients with community-acquired urinary tract infections. Draft genome sequencing was conducted using the Illumina HiSeq platform. The genomes of MM 1, MM 4, and MM 190 strains have a size of 3.82-3.97 Mb and a GC content of 50.9-51%. Protein-coding sequences (CDS) represent 96.1% of the genomes, RNAs are encoded by 2.7% of genes and pseu

BACKGROUND: Endophthalmitis following intravitreal injection is a potentially devastating complication of anti-VEGF injections. Post-injection endophthalmitis due to Enterococcus faecalis is rare, and no previous case of Morganella morganii endophthalmitis after intravitreal injection has been reported.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present the first reported case of Morganella morganii and Enterococcus faecalis endophthalmitis after intravitreal injection in an immunocompetent patient in the absence of recent ocular surgery. Our patient presented with hand movement visual acuity one day after anti-V

BACKGROUND Pituitary abscess (PA) is a rare pituitary lesion accounting for less than 1% of all pituitary diseases and is associated with high mortality rates. The non-specific clinical symptoms and radiological features preclude accurate diagnosis of the disease. Hence, surgical intervention is still considered the criterion standard method for PA diagnosis. Most PAs occur as a primary disease or due to complications such as surgery, sepsis, and adjacent inflamed lesions. CASE REPORT A 53-year-old man presented to the Emergency Department with a headache associated with nausea, vomiting, and
