The Morus genus comprises several tree species whose fruits are used in human nutrition, while the leaves and roots are used in traditional medicine. The aim of this study was to highlight the antioxidant, cholinesterase inhibitory, and neuroprotective effects of hydroalcoholic extracts from Morus alba (MAE) and Morus nigra (MNE) leaves. RP-UHPLC-PDA analysis of extracts revealed the presence of polyphenols in higher quantities in MNE extract compared to MAE. Both extracts demonstrated antioxidant properties in the hydroxyl radical scavenging and lipid peroxidation inhibition assays. MNE exhib

Mulberry (Morus species) is a well-known economic crop that has served as an effective natural remedy in various traditional therapeutic practices, including the folk medicine of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Despite this fact, no research has been done to explore the chemical composition and antimicrobial activity of Morus species grown in the UAE. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to evaluate the mineral content, phytochemical analyses, antifungal and antibacterial properties (for leaves, branches, and roots) of the only mulberry species present in the United Arab Emirates (UA

BACKGROUND: Morus mongolica holds significant value in medicinal applications, livestock fodder production, and ecological restoration. Although polyploidization is well-documented in plants for enhancing stress tolerance and altering nutrient composition, the specific beneficial traits conferred by genome duplication in M. mongolica have not yet been fully characterized.
RESULTS: Our results demonstrated that a 72 h preculture followed by 72 h of colchicine treatment (30 mg·L-¹), yielded a tetraploid rate of 25%. Significant differences were observed between diploid and tetraploid plants in

The fruit of Morus alba L. (MAF) has been consumed as a food worldwide. MAF has also been widely used in traditional medicine for thousands of years in East Asia, and its diverse bioactivities have been reported in numerous publications. However, no prokinetic activity has been reported for MAF or its components. In the present study, therefore, we investigated the effects of MAF on gastrointestinal motor function by measuring the intestinal transit rate (ITR) of Evans blue in mice in vivo. The ITR values accelerated by MAF were significantly higher than those accelerated by cisapride or metoc

Morus alba L. (MA) is a member of the Moraceae family, known as "white mulberry". Due to the high levels of bioactive compounds, mulberry plants can be considered a good source of nutrients and antioxidant compounds. Our study aims to analyze the effect of MA extract leaves on erythrocytes, focusing on its action on metabolism and membrane integrity. The choice of erythrocytes as a study model is based on their metabolic simplicity and their easy availability. Cell viability, following exposure of the cells to the extract, was evaluated by hemolysis, methemoglobin, caspase 3 activity and flow

Morus nigra has been used to relieve pain in Brazilian folk medicine. This study was conducted to establish the antinociceptive properties of dichloromethane extract from leaves of M. nigra. The formalin, hot plate, and tail immersion tests as well as acetic acid-induced writhing were used to investigate the antinociceptive activity in mice. The extract at test doses of 100 and 300 mg/kg, p.o. clearly demonstrated antinociceptive activity in all tests. The extract administered at 300 mg/kg, p.o. had a stronger antinociceptive effect than indomethacin (5 mg/kg, p.o.) and morphine (10 mg/kg, p.o

Deoxynojirimycin (DNJ), the first isolated iminosugar, is a natural alkaloid acting as a potent inhibitor of α-glucosidase with high nutritional value. It naturally occurs in plants (especially Morus spp.), microbes, and insects or can be synthesized. Diverse biological activities, such as antihyperglycemic, lipid-lowering, antitumor, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory, have been recognized for this compound. However, DNJ has not been approved as a food supplement until now. Several studies, also in clinics, are carried out on Morus spp. containing DNJ. Among Morus spp., Morus alba L. (white mul

BACKGROUND: Clinical methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a thorny problem in current anti-infective therapeutics and a challenge of new drug development. Plant prenylflavonoids possess anti-MRSA activity, but few of the prenylflavonoids have been reported the synergistic anti-MRSA effect when they are used in combination with conventional antibacterial agents.
PURPOSE: This study deals with anti-MRSA activity of four prenylflavonoids from the root bark of Morus alba and their synergism with 11 conventional antibacterial agents.
METHODS: Chromatographic methods and spectral

The antioxidant activity and liver protective effect of Morus bombycis Koidzumi were investigated. Aqueous extracts of M. bombycis Koidzumi had higher superoxide radical scavenging activity than other types of extracts. The aqueous extract at a dose of 100 mg/kg showed significant hepatoprotective activity when compared with that of a standard agent. The biochemical results were confirmed by histological observations indicating that M. bombycis Koidzumi extract together with CCl(4) treatment decreased ballooning degeneration. The water extract recovered the CCl(4)-induced liver injury and show
