Safety of pyrethroid-treated mosquito nets.

The use of insecticide treated nets (ITNs) for personal protection against malaria vector Anopheles mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) has become popular during the past decade. With the precautions outlined in this paper, field use of pyrethroids--at concentrations recommended for treatment of mosquito nets--poses little or no hazard to people treating the nets or to users of the treated nets. With frequent exposure to low concentrations of pyrethroids, the risk of toxicity of any kind is remote. Pyrethroids entering the systemic circulation are rapidly metabolized to much less toxic metabolites

[Mosquito nets impregnated against malaria in Zaire].

On the Bateké plateau 60 km east of Kinshasa, Zaïre, where malaria is stable, three villages have been selected for a trial of malaria control using bednets impregnated with deltamethrin at 25 mg per square meter from February to November 1991. One village (3,000 inhabitants) has been provided 800 impregnated bednets and an other one (2,900 inhabitants) kept 800 non impregnated bednets. The third village (900 inhabitants) served as a control and has remained without nets. Anopheles gambiae was the main and nearly exclusive vector of malaria. Its biting density was reduced by 94% in the village

Malaria control using deltamethrin impregnated mosquito nets/ insecticide treated bed nets: experience in armed forces.

The study was undertaken to evaluate the impact of deltamethrin-impregnated mosquito nets on malaria incidence, mosquito density, any adverse side effect among users. A field trial was carried out over a period of three years in two adjacent military stations at Allahabad (UP), keeping one as a trial and other as a control station. During first year, baseline data were collected and during next two years residual spray was replaced with use of deltamethrin impregnated mosquito nets in trial station. The use of deltamethrin-impregnated mosquito nets/insecticide treated bed nets resulted in a si

Fish mucous cocoons: the 'mosquito nets' of the sea.

Mucus performs numerous protective functions in vertebrates, and in fishes may defend them against harmful organisms, although often the evidence is contradictory. The function of the mucous cocoons that many parrotfishes and wrasses sleep in, while long used as a classical example of antipredator behaviour, remains unresolved. Ectoparasitic gnathiid isopods (Gnathiidae), which feed on the blood of fish, are removed by cleaner fish during the day; however, it is unclear how parrotfish and wrasse avoid gnathiid attacks at night. To test the novel hypothesis that mucous cocoons protect against g

Incidence and consequences of damage to insecticide-treated mosquito nets in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Efforts to improve the impact of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) should be informed by understanding of the causes of decay in effect. Holes in LLINs have been estimated to account for 7-11% of loss in effect on vectorial capacity for Plasmodium falciparum malaria in an analysis of repeated cross-sectional surveys of LLINs in Kenya. This does not account for the effect of holes as a cause of net attrition or non-use, which cannot be measured using only cross-sectional data. There is a need for estimates of how much these indirect effects of physical damage on use and attriti

[Control of malaria using mosquito nets impregnated with pyrethroids in Burkina Faso].

An experimental trial of malaria control was carried out in the village of Karangasso in the south-west Burkina Faso. It was based on the use by the whole population of deltamethrin impregnated bed nets at 25 mg/m2. During the first year pretreatment data on entomology, parasitology and pathological incidence of malaria were collected in the whole village. During the second year a quarter of the village with a population of 1,200 was chosen for the experiment and impregnated bed nets were given to everybody while the other quarter of the same population size was kept as a control area. Malaria

Temperature, mosquito feeding status and mosquito density influence the measured bio-efficacy of insecticide-treated nets in cone assays.

BACKGROUND: The WHO cone bioassay is routinely used to evaluate the bioefficacy of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) for product pre-qualification and confirmation of continued ITN performance during operational monitoring. Despite its standardized nature, variability is often observed between tests. We investigated the influence of temperature in the testing environment, mosquito feeding status and mosquito density on cone bioassay results. METHODS: Cone bioassays were conducted on MAGNet (alphacypermethrin) and Veeralin (alphacypermethrin and piperonyl butoxide (PBO)) ITNs, using laboratory-r

To assess whether addition of pyriproxyfen to long-lasting insecticidal mosquito nets increases their durability compared to standard long-lasting insecticidal mosquito nets: study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The effectiveness of pyrethroid-treated bednets for malaria control in sub-Saharan Africa is under threat because of high levels of resistance to pyrethroid insecticides in the vectors. Here we assess the durability of polyethylene nets with a novel combination of permethrin, a pyrethroid, with pyriproxyfen, an insect juvenile mimic (PPF-LLIN), in comparison with a typical permethrin-treated long-lasting insecticidal net (LLIN). METHODS: This is a cluster randomised controlled trial of net durability in Burkina Faso, with clustering at the level of the compound and includes entomo

Remote Effect of Insecticide-Treated Nets and the Personal Protection against Malaria Mosquito Bites.

Experimental huts are part of the WHO process for testing and evaluation of Insecticide Treated Nets (ITN) in semi-field conditions. Experimental Hut Trials (EHTs) mostly focus on two main indicators (i.e., mortality and blood feeding reduction) that serve as efficacy criteria to obtain WHO interim recommendation. However, several other outputs that rely on counts of vectors collected in the huts are neglected although they can give useful information about vectors' behavior and personal protection provided by ITNs. In particular, EHTs allow to measure the deterrent effect and personal protect

Coverage of insecticide-treated mosquito nets in preschool consultations and factors associated with non-use of insecticide-treated mosquito nets among children in the Democratic Republic of Congo: A base population cross-sectional study.

Insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) are among the most effective malaria prevention interventions, yet their actual use among children remains below national targets. This study assesses ITN coverage and utilization among children attending preschool consultations (PSC) and identifies factors associated with non-use. A cross-sectional study was conducted in 2025 in 156 health facilities across six provinces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Children aged 6-59 months accompanied by a parent or guardian were included. Data were collected during a household survey through face-to-face in

Who uses the only mosquito net? Sex and age disparities.

BACKGROUND: The percentage of the population sleeping under insecticide-treated nets (ITN) increased in sub-Saharan Africa from 3 to 59% between 2000 and 2023. However, achieving universal coverage remains far from realized. Because ITNs are the most effective tools for preventing malaria, it is important to identify barriers to their use and maximize their protective effects. We investigated sex and age disparities in ITN use in a region of western Kenya where Plasmodium transmission remains high. METHODS: We examined sex- and age-related disparities in ITN use under two scenarios: household

Integrating zooprophylaxis, insecticide-treated livestock and mosquito nets for malaria control: a One Health proposal.

Malaria transmission persists despite widespread use of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) due to multiple factors, including outdoor and early-evening biting and insecticide resistance. In this context, zooprophylaxis, which strategically uses livestock to divert mosquitoes from humans, has shown mixed epidemiological effects. Conversely, treating livestock with topical or systemic insecticides (known as insecticide-treated livestock [ITL]) has been demonstrated to significantly reduce mosquito survival. Combining ITL and zooprophylaxis with ITNs could improve vector control for species that fee

Video augmentation of the WHO cone assay to quantify mosquito behavioural responses to insecticide-treated nets.

BACKGROUND: Insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) using pyrethroids have been the main vector control tools deployed in malaria endemic countries and are responsible for the dramatic reduction in African malaria cases in the early 2000s. The World Health Organization (WHO) cone test was designed to assess the rapid toxicity effects of pyrethroid exposure on mosquito vectors but has yielded no insights beyond 60-min knockdown and 24-h mortality. As dual-active-ingredient (AI) ITNs become more widespread, bioassays that can provide realistic assessment of single- and dual-treated ITNs (i.e. nets with

Evaluation of electric nets as means to sample mosquito vectors host-seeking on humans and primates.

BACKGROUND: Plasmodium knowlesi is found in macaques and is the only major zoonotic malaria to affect humans. Transmission of P. knowlesi between people and macaques depends on the host species preferences and feeding behavior of mosquito vectors. However, these behaviours are difficult to measure due to the lack of standardized methods for sampling potential vectors attracted to different host species. This study evaluated electrocuting net traps as a safe, standardised method for sampling P. knowlesi vectors attracted to human and macaque hosts. Field experiments were conducted within a majo

Prevalence of malaria across Papua New Guinea after initial roll-out of insecticide-treated mosquito nets.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the population prevalence of malaria in villages across Papua New Guinea (PNG) following the first roll-out of free long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLIN). METHODS: Between October 2008 and August 2009, a household survey was conducted in 49 random villages in districts covered by the LLIN distribution campaign. The survey extended to 19 villages in sentinel sites that had not yet been covered by the campaign. In each village, 30 households were randomly sampled, household heads were interviewed and capillary blood samples were collected from all consenting household memb

Relationship of sanitation, water boiling, and mosquito nets to health biomarkers in a rural subsistence population.

OBJECTIVES: Throughout human evolutionary history, parasites and pathogens were a major cause of mortality-modern urban life with public health infrastructure has changed disease exposure. We examine associations between boiling water, using latrines, mosquito net usage, and biomarkers among the Tsimane, a nonindustrial subsistence population with little public health infrastructure. METHODS: We conducted cross sectional surveys on water, latrines, and bed nets among 507 heads of households (aged 18-92 years, median age 41 years). Controlling Malaria in Western Pacific with Mosquito Nets Treated with Pyrethroids in Village Communities, 1979-1999.

Insecticide-treated mosquito nets were first put to practical use in the Western Pacific Region. Less than a decade after conducting workshops and other promotional activities, millions of people were protected by 1989. This occurred before the availability of commercially produced pretreated nets and before global funding for mass net distribution. This paper describes the sequence of steps leading to regional control success. The beginning stages in 1979 recognized that treating torn mosquito nets was a viable control option. Basic net treatment procedures were established by 1983 and worksh

Influence of testing modality on bioefficacy for the evaluation of Interceptor® G2 mosquito nets to combat malaria mosquitoes in Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Insecticide-treated net (ITN) durability is evaluated using longitudinal bioefficacy and fabric integrity sampling post-distribution. Interceptor® G2 was developed for resistance management and contains two adulticides: alpha-cypermethrin and chlorfenapyr; it is a pro-insecticide that is metabolized into its active form by mosquito-detoxifying enzymes and may be enhanced when the mosquito is physiologically active. To elucidate the impact of bioassay modality, mosquito exposures of the alphacypermethrin ITN Interceptor® and dual adulticide Interceptor® G2 were investigated. METHOD
