Additive and synergistic relations of early mother-child and caregiver-child interactions and socioeconomic outcomes in adulthood.

Prior theoretical and empirical studies have linked the first 3 years of children's life with later life outcomes. One primary explanation is the critical role these experiences play in children's early brain development (including their early language and cognitive abilities) and subsequent schooling achievement. The current study is a registered report with two complementary research objectives: (1) examine to what extent stimulating and responsive interactions with mothers and nonparental caregivers during the first 3 years of life show additive or synergistic associations with key socioeco

Child death related to insulin omission by mother.

A 4-year-old child was found dead in her house. She had been suffering from insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) for 3 years. She had been admitted to hospital three times, and attended the hospital once a month. Her glycaemic control remained poor. Autopsy findings revealed a remarkably fatty liver and lack of beta cells in the pancreatic islets of Langerhans. The laboratory reported ketoacidosis, ketonuria, glycosuria, and high levels of vitreous glucose and ketones. Her father had been absent for the 3 days before her death, and the mother should have fed her. Her mother was found dru

Analysis of Related Factors of Mother-to-Child Transmission of AIDS and Evaluation of Measures to Prevent Mother-to-Child Transmission.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

AIDS is still a major public health facing the world. With the implementation of AIDS prevention projects and the continuous maturity of technology, more and more HIV-positive women choose to have children. However, the children born to these women are a special group. Exposure to HIV and antiviral drugs during the fetal period can increase the success rate of children's elimination of the mother, which is worthy of attention and research. This article focuses on the analysis of the related factors of mother-to-child transmission of AIDS and the evaluation of mother-to-child blocking measures,

Factors related to a disturbance in the mother-child bond and attachment.

INTRODUCTION: Establishing an adequate bond and attachment between a mother and child is essential for preventing pathologies and developing this relationship in the future. PURPOSE: To identify the factors related to a disturbance of the mother-child bond or attachment. METHODS: A cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out with women with a biological child between 6 weeks and 18 months of age. The Mother-Child Bond-Attachment Questionnaire (VAMF, for its name in Spanish) was administered to measure the bond and postnatal attachment together with a questionnaire containing sociodemog

Physiological responses to non-child-related stressors in mothers at risk for child abuse.

Physical child abusers and adults at risk for child abuse, relative to comparison subjects, are reported to be more physiologically reactive to child-related stressors. It is not known if the reported physiological reactivity is child specific or if physical child abusers and at-risk parents are also more reactive to other types of stressful stimuli. The present study investigated changes in heart rate and skin conductance in response to four types of non-child-related stressors in at-risk and matched low-risk mothers. The four types of stressful stimuli were: a cold pressor; a stressful film

[Child Persecutor or Child Savior? The Impact of Trauma and Migration on a Mother's Ambivalence in Relation to her Child].

Objectives The objectives of this paper are to explore the impact of psychological trauma and migration on a mother's ambivalence regarding her relationship with her child and to explore the effect on the child's "continuity of being." Methods Literature on the ambivalence of mothers who have experienced trauma and migration is reviewed. The authors present the hypothesis that the presence of trauma and/or migration exacerbate the phenomenon of ambivalence and that it may impact early interactions in mother-infant dyads. The stories of three migrant dyads are presented to illustrate these proc

Effect of maternal panic disorder on mother-child interaction and relation to child anxiety and child self-efficacy.

To determine whether mothers with panic disorder with or without agoraphobia interacted differently with their children than normal control mothers, 86 mothers and their adolescents (aged between 13 and 23 years) were observed during a structured play situation. Maternal as well as adolescent anxiety status was assessed according to a structured diagnostic interview. Results showed that mothers with panic disorder/agoraphobia showed more verbal control, were more criticizing and less sensitive during mother-child interaction than mothers without current mental disorders. Moreover, more conflic

Mother-Child touch patterns in infant feeding disorders: relation to maternal, child, and environmental factors.

OBJECTIVE: To examine mother and child's touch patterns in infant feeding disorders within a transactional framework. METHOD: Infants (aged 9-34 months) referred to a community-based clinic were diagnosed with feeding disorders (n = 20) or other primary disorder (n = 27) and were case matched with nonreferred controls (n = 47). Mother-child play and feeding were observed and the home environment was assessed. Microcoding detected touch patterns, response to partner's touch, and proximity at play. Relational behaviors were coded during feeding. RESULTS: Compared with infants with other primar

Socially anxious mothers' narratives to their children and their relation to child representations and adjustment.

Anxious mothers' parenting, particularly transfer of threat information, has been considered important in their children's risk for social anxiety disorder (SAnxD), and maternal narratives concerning potential social threat could elucidate this contribution. Maternal narratives to their preschool 4- to 5-year-old children, via a picture book about starting school, were assessed in socially anxious (N = 73), and nonanxious (N = 63) mothers. Child representations of school were assessed via doll play (DP). After one school term, mothers (Child Behavior Checklist [CBCL]) and teachers (Teacher Rep

Responsiveness in interactions of mothers and sons with ADHD: relations to maternal and child characteristics.

We observed mother-child interactions, at baseline, in 136 families of 7-10-year-old boys with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) who were part of a large clinical trial, the Multimodal Treatment Study of Children with ADHD. Independent coders rated stylistic aspects of maternal behavior and factor analyses revealed a responsiveness factor that included overall responsiveness and sensitivity to the child, warmth and acceptance, and appropriate control. We examined relations between maternal responsiveness and (a) maternal depressive symptoms and maternal childhood ADHD symptoms, a

Trauma Exposure in Relation to the Content of Mother-Child Emotional Conversations and Quality of Interaction.

Parent-child conversations contribute to understanding and regulating children's emotions. Similarities and differences in discussed topics, quality of interaction and coherence/elaboration in mother-child conversations about emotional experiences of the child were studied in dyads who had been exposed to interpersonal trauma (N = 213) and non-trauma-exposed dyads (N = 86). Results showed that in conversations about negative emotions, trauma-exposed children more often discussed trauma topics and focused less on relationship topics than non-trauma-exposed children. Trauma-exposed dyads found i

The shared mother-child epigenetic signature of neglect is related to maternal adverse events.

Studies of DNA methylation have revealed the biological mechanisms by which life adversity confers risk for later physical and mental health problems. What remains unknown is the "biologically embedding" of maternal adverse experiences resulting in maladaptive parenting and whether these epigenetic effects are transmitted to the next generation. This study focuses on neglectful mothering indexed by a severe disregard for the basic and psychological needs of the child. Using the Illumina Human Methylation EPIC BeadChip in saliva samples, we identified genes with differentially methylated region

Trauma-related symptoms in neglected preschoolers and affective quality of mother-child communication.

This study (a) assessed whether child neglect is associated with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and dissociative symptoms in the preschool period and (b) examined the role of quality of mother-child affective communication in the development of trauma-related symptoms among neglected children. Participants were 33 neglected and 72 non-neglected preschoolers (mean age = 60 months). Neglected children were recruited from the Child Protection Agencies. Neglected and non-neglected children victims of other form of abuse were excluded from the study. Trauma symptoms were evaluated through mot

Women's knowledge, attitudes and practices related to mother-to-child transmission of HTLV-1 in Peru.

Human T-cell Lymphotropic Virus type 1 (HTLV-1) can be transmitted from mother to child through breastfeeding and increases the risk of mortality and morbidity from inflammatory, infectious and neoplastic diseases. Short-duration breastfeeding or exclusive formula feeding reduces transmission. In Peru, where breastfeeding is common and populations affected by HTLV-1 lack access to safe water and sewage, which hinders control, understanding women's knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding HTLV-1 mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) is essential. We conducted a descriptive, exploratory cross

Assessing Mothers' Automatic Affective and Discipline Reactions to Child Behavior in Relation to Child Abuse Risk: A Dual-Processing Investigation.

Given the scope and adverse clinical consequences of child abuse, assessment of salient etiological factors can lend critical insights needed for abuse prevention. Increasingly, dual-processing models have been applied to aggression, which postulate that parallel automatic and conscious processes can evoke aggressive behavior, implicating both affective and cognitive elements in both routes. Using two samples of mothers (n = 110 and n = 195), the current investigation considered evidence of the reliability and convergent, concurrent, and construct validity of the new Automatic Parent Emotion A

Health-Related Quality of Life in Kindergarten Children with Developmental Language Disorder: Child-Mother Agreement.

Language disorders are associated with difficulties in various aspects of life, such as academic and social functioning, resulting in impaired health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Most studies use a parent proxy method to assess HRQoL. Since HRQoL refers to the subjective experience of an individual, it is necessary to assess children's perspectives along with their mothers'. The aim of the current study is to explore HRQoL rating agreement between children and their mothers, since the literature on other conditions suggests that discrepancies seem to reflect their different perspectives. Mother-to-child transmission of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 in relation to the season in Yaounde, Cameroon.

A public health program to prevent mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) by treatment with nevirapine has been ongoing in Yaounde, Cameroon since January 2000. After 24 months, plasma samples from 119 children born to HIV-1-positive mothers were tested for HIV-1 RNA between six and eight weeks after birth. Thirteen (10.9%) tested positive (95% confidence interval = 5.2-16.7%). Risk factors associated with MTCT in this study were maternal viral load (P < 0.05), low birth weight (chi2 for trend = 8.78, P = 0.01), and birth during the second half of th
