Self-motion perception without sensory motion.

Various studies have demonstrated a role for cognition on self-motion perception. Those studies all concerned modulations of the perception of a physical or visual motion stimulus. In our study, however, we investigated whether cognitive cues could elicit a percept of oscillatory self-motion in the absence of sensory motion. If so, we could use this percept to investigate if the resulting mismatch between estimated self-motion and a lack of corresponding sensory signals is motion sickening. To that end, we seated blindfolded participants on a swing that remained motionless during two condition

Motion perception in glaucoma.

PURPOSE: This study was performed to investigate motion perception in patients with glaucoma. METHODS: A random dot motion test was used to measure three aspects of central motion perception: minimum displacement threshold (Dmin), maximum displacement threshold (Dmax), and coherence threshold (signal to noise). Motion perception was assessed in 15 patients with primary open-angle glaucoma, 23 low-risk patients in whom glaucoma was suspected, and 24 age-matched normal subjects. RESULTS: Central motion perception was significantly impaired in patients with glaucoma; in particular, the Dmin was

Perception of human motion.

Humans, being highly social creatures, rely heavily on the ability to perceive what others are doing and to infer from gestures and expressions what others may be intending to do. These perceptual skills are easily mastered by most, but not all, people, in large part because human action readily communicates intentions and feelings. In recent years, remarkable advances have been made in our understanding of the visual, motoric, and affective influences on perception of human action, as well as in the elucidation of the neural concomitants of perception of human action. This article reviews tho

Blindsight modulation of motion perception.

Monkey data suggest that of all perceptual abilities, motion perception is the most likely to survive striate damage. The results of studies on motion blindsight in humans, though, are mixed. We used an indirect strategy to examine how responses to visible stimuli were modulated by blind-field stimuli. In a 26-year-old man with focal striate lesions, discrimination of visible optic flow was enhanced about 7% by blind-field flow, even though discrimination of optic flow in the blind field alone (the direct strategy) was at chance. Pursuit of an imagined target using peripheral cues showed reduc

Motion perception with visual prostheses.

Visual prostheses represent a groundbreaking avenue for restoring vision in individuals with visual impairments. These devices utilize electrode arrays positioned in early visual processing areas, like the retina, thalamus, or primary visual cortex. Connected to a camera, they transform a stream of video to electrical stimulation to present the visual environment through patterned activation of phosphenes. Visual prostheses offer the potential to enhance visual function and thereby quality of life for users, however, understanding and replicating motion perception in a manner akin to natural v

Motion perception and its disorders.

As we live in a dynamic world, motion is a fundamental aspect of our visual experience. The advent of computerized stimuli has allowed controlled study of a wide array of motion phenomena, including global integration and segmentation, speed and direction discrimination, motion aftereffects, the optic flow that accompanies self-motion, perception of object form derived from motion cues, and point-light biological motion. Animal studies first revealed the existence of a motion-selective region, the middle temporal (MT) area, also known as V5, located in the lateral occipitotemporal cortex, foll

Motion perception in optic neuropathy.

We tested motion perception in 15 eyes of 13 patients with optic neuropathy. Eleven of the eyes had optic neuritis. The motion perception paradigm tested subjects' ability to discriminate the direction of a global coherent motion signal amid varying levels of background noise. The results showed defective motion processing in eight of the 15 eyes. This defect was not due to low visibility (poor spatial resolution), since 11 of the 15 eyes had Snellen acuities of 20/20 or better. Neither was impaired motion perception due to decreased luminance sensitivity, since attenuating the display signal

Analogue models of motion perception.

An object moving in discrete spatial jumps is difficult to distinguish from a continuously moving object, provided the time between jumps is not too great. The extent of this perceived continuity may be measured by probing the perceived spatial location at times between the target jumps, by either a vernier alignment or a stereoscopic technique. As the time between jumps increase the accuracy of spatial interpolation falls, until finally the object is seen only at its actual spatial locations. These results can be analysed in the frequency domain by treating the signal for apparent motion as t

Retention interval modulates motion-history biases in visual motion perception.

Serial dependence, the tendency for recent perceptual history to bias current judgments, has been proposed as a mechanism supporting perceptual stability, although its cognitive origin remains debated. We investigated serial dependence in motion direction estimation using random-dot kinematograms (RDKs). Participants reported perceived motion direction after delays of 0, 1, 3, or 6 s following stimulus offset. Trial-level linear mixed-effects modelling revealed a significant serial dependence effect and a significant interaction with delay, indicating that the magnitude of the DoG-based histor

Motion parallax contribution to perception of self-motion and depth.

The object of this study is to mathematically specify important characteristics of visual flow during translation of the eye for the perception of depth and self-motion. We address various strategies by which the central nervous system may estimate self-motion and depth from motion parallax, using equations for the visual velocity field generated by translation of the eye through space. Our results focus on information provided by the movement and deformation of three-dimensional objects and on local flow behavior around a fixated point. All of these issues are addressed mathematically in term

Dorsal stream development in motion and structure-from-motion perception.

Little is known about the neural development underlying high order visual perception. For example, in detection of structures by coherently moving dots, motion information must interact with shape-based information to enable object recognition. Tasks involving these different motion-based discriminations are known to activate distinct specialized brain areas in adults. Here, we investigate neural development of normally developing children using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during perception of randomly moving point-light dots (RM), coherently moving dots that formed a 3D rotat

Individual motion perception parameters and motion sickness frequency sensitivity in fore-aft motion.

Previous literature suggests a relationship between individual characteristics of motion perception and the peak frequency of motion sickness sensitivity. Here, we used well-established paradigms to relate motion perception and motion sickness on an individual level. We recruited 23 participants to complete a two-part experiment. In the first part, we determined individual velocity storage time constants from perceived rotation in response to Earth Vertical Axis Rotation (EVAR) and subjective vertical time constants from perceived tilt in response to centrifugation. The cross-over frequency fo

Hierarchical motion perception as causal inference.

Motion can only be defined relative to a reference frame; yet it remains unclear which reference frame guides perception. Implied gravity promotes coherent motion perception.

Gravity, a constant in Earth's environment, constrains not only physical motion but also our estimation of motion trajectories. Early studies show that natural gravitational acceleration facilitates the manual interception of free-falling objects. However, whether implied gravity affects the perception of coherent motion patterns from local motion cues remains poorly understood. Here, we designed a motion coherence threshold task to measure the visual discrimination of coherent global motion with natural (1 g) and reversed (-1 g) gravitational accelerations. Across five experiments, we showed

Motion perception in central field loss.

Motion information is essential in daily life because it provides cues to depth, timing, object identification, and self-motion, as well as input to the oculomotor system. As the peripheral visual field is exquisitely sensitive to motion, we investigated the periphery of individuals with central visual field loss (CFL) to determine whether speed and direction discrimination are intact in this population. We compared CFL participants' (N = 8), older (N = 6), and young controls' (N = 6) ability to discriminate motion speed and direction in a two-spatial-alternative forced-choice design. Particip

Biological Motion Perception in Huntington's Disease.

BACKGROUND: The ability of healthy individuals to detect biological motion by using a small number of moving points is well established in animals and humans. Perception of human movements may depend on internal models that drive self-generated movements and influence motion discrimination (Reed CL et al. 1995 and 2007). As a person's motor repertoire deteriorates, the accuracy of these models may also decrease. OBJECTIVE: Determine if people with symptomatic Huntington's disease (HD) have difficulty perceiving movements. METHODS: In this study point-light displays were created with a Vicon

Motion perception deficit in Down Syndrome.

It is a well established fact that Down Syndrome (DS) individuals have a tendency to develop Alzheimer's disease (AD) (Lott, I.T., Head, E., 2005. Alzheimer disease and Down syndrome: factors in pathogenesis. Neurobiol. Aging 26, 383-389). They have therefore been proposed as a model to study the pre-dementia stage of Alzheimer's (Mann, D.M., 1988. The pathological association between Down syndrome and Alzheimer disease. Mech. Ageing Dev. 43, 99-136). One of the specific deficits exhibited by AD patients is optic flow motion perception (Tetewsky, S.J., Duffy, C.J., 1999. Visual loss and gettin

Epileptic kinetopsia: ictal illusory motion perception.

A 38-year-old woman with a right posterior temporo-occipital brain tumor developed partial seizures with illusory motion perception of environmental objects going from the center to the periphery within her left visual field. Subdural EEG recordings during visual seizures revealed onsets in the right temporo-parieto-occipital junction. Her ictal visual distortion was probably caused by activation of V5, an area involved in motion perception. Given that the tumor location corresponds with the ictal onset in the V5 area, and the semiology of her seizures, this case supports that epileptic dysfun
