Time estimation during motor activity.

Several studies on time estimation showed that the estimation of temporal intervals is related to the amount of attention devoted to time. This is explained by the scalar timing theory, which assumes that attention alters the number of pulses transferred by our internal clock to an accumulator that keeps track of the elapsed time. In a previous study, it was found that time underestimation during cognitive-demanding tasks was more pronounced while walking than while sitting, whereas no clear motor-induced effects emerged without a concurrent cognitive task. What remains unclear then is the mot

Canine gallbladder cyclic motor activity.

We investigated whether the gallbladder has cyclic motor activity similar to that of the stomach, lower esophageal sphincter, and sphincter of Oddi in the fasted state. We found that the canine gallbladder infundibulum exhibited a cyclic burst of short duration (69 +/- 3 s) contractions that were closely associated with phase III activity of the antrum. The cyclic motor activity was sometimes less prominent or absent in the body and the fundus of the gallbladder. The mean period of gallbladder cyclic motor activity was not significantly different from the mean period of phase III activity in t

Motor activity in depressed children.

BACKGROUND: Motor retardation is a cardinal feature in adult depression. Limited information exists about motor activity in depressed children. The present study evaluated motor activity in depressed children compared to controls and investigated whether motor activity can be linked with the severity of symptoms in depressed children. METHOD: Motor activity during both day- and night time was recorded by actigraphy in twenty-two depressed children and their controls. A K-SADS-PL interview of the child and his/her mother was used to diagnose depression. The depressed children filled in the Chi

Circadian distribution of motor activity and immobility in narcolepsy: assessment with continuous motor activity monitoring.

The circadian distribution of motor activity and immobility of 14 unmedicated narcoleptics and matched controls was evaluated by monitoring continuous wrist motor activity 5 successive days and nights at home. Sleep was also assessed by sleep logs. The amplitude of the circadian rhythm of motor activity and immobility was significantly lower in narcoleptics than in controls. The variables that best distinguish narcoleptics from controls were the diurnal and nocturnal mean duration of uninterrupted immobility, which can be explained by excessive daytime sleepiness and frequent nocturnal awakeni

Quantitative motor activity differentiates schizophrenia subtypes.

BACKGROUND: Motor symptoms are frequent in schizophrenia and relevant to the diagnosis of subtypes. However, the assessment has been limited to observations recorded in scales and experimental designs. The aim of this study was to use wrist actigraphy to obtain motor activity data in 3 schizophrenia subtypes. METHODS: In total, 60 patients with schizophrenia (35 paranoid, 12 catatonic, 13 disorganized) were investigated using continuous wrist actigraphy over 24 h in an inpatient setting on average 38 days after admission. Data of the wakeful hours of the day were analyzed. RESULTS: The activ

Vagal influence on duodenal motor activity.

The extrinsic and intrinsic vagal influences on duodenal motor activity in the anesthetized dog were investigated. The following conclusions were derived: (1) Electrical vagal stimulation elicits gastroduodenal contractions. (2) Poststimulatory contractions, or off responses, occur on the antrum and duodenum after termination of the stimulus. (3) Denervation of the extrinsic vagal nerves to the duodenum does not eliminate the above responses. (4) Denervation of the extrinsic nerves to the duodenum and transection of the gastroduodenal junction eliminates stimulated duodenal motility and the oc

Ovarian function and gastrointestinal motor activity.

Gastrointestinal disorders are strictly related to the ovary function. In fact, it is noted that the prevalence of visceral pain disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome, gastroesophageal reflux disease, gallbladder and biliary tract diseases are significantly higher in women. Furthermore, symptom such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, distension, satiety, bloating, diarrhoa or constipation, frequently appears in relation with pregnancy, luteal phase of the menstrual cycle or perimenopausal and menopausal states. Further support for the contribution of ovarian steroids to functional gastr

[Arousal and motor activity during sleep].

OBJECTIVE: To describe different types of motor activity which occur during sleep in relation to episodes of arousal and sleep disorder. DEVELOPMENT: During sleep, normal motor activity should be distinguished from paroxystic episodes: parasomnias; abnormal movements such as nocturnal paroxystic dystonia, which is very similar to epilepsy of frontal origin; nocturnal epileptic crises and especially periodic movements of the limbs and the restless legs syndrome, which is related to it. Physiological cyclical fluctuations of sleep are common to all these conditions and due to cortico-subcortica

[Contralateral neuro-motor apparatus under unilateral restriction of motor activity in rat].

Electromyographic recordings of contralateral m. gastrocnemius of the rat after unilateral section of Achilles' tendon (tenotomy) were studied. Motor reflex, Hoffman reflex and firing of motor units of contralateral m. gastrocnemius were recorded in control and in 10 days after tendotomy. Motor units changed their firing in the background and in reaction to sciatic nerve stimulation. The results of study showed that unilateral section of Achilles' tendon increased the excitability of single motoneurons of contralateral spinal senters.

Assessing Motor Cortical Activity: How Repetitions Impact Motor Execution and Imagery Analysis.

The study of motor-related cortical activity is crucial for analyzing brain behavior during motor execution (ME) and imagery (MI). Improving motor learning and recovery in patients with motor disorders involves both ME and MI. Although ME and MI share the same motor brain network, multiple studies show differences in motor-related cortical activity regarding amplitude, timing, and fatigue. Movement-related cortical potentials (MRCPs) and event-related desynchronization (ERD) are key motor-related cortical activities in time and frequency domains. These are used to characterize and monitor neur

Excitability properties of motor axons in patients with spontaneous motor unit activity.

OBJECTIVES: Measures of nerve excitability provide information about biophysical properties of peripheral axons in disease states. One measure, the strength duration time constant (tau(SD)), was previously reported to be prolonged in motor axons of patients with acquired neuromyotonia. The present study used a new protocol that applies a more comprehensive and sensitive panel of measures of axonal excitability, to determine firstly whether changes in tau(SD) were present in a group of patients with evidence of spontaneous motor unit activity; and secondly, if such changes in tau(SD) were prese

Synchronous cortical oscillatory activity during motor action.

Oscillations of the motor cortex interact with similar activity of the spinal motoneuron pool in the 15-30 Hertz frequency range. Recent observations have demonstrated how this interaction affects the firing of single corticospinal neurons. The interaction, reflected as corticomuscular coherence, occurs for both distal and proximal muscles and it constitutes one connection in a larger web of oscillatory interactions, including several other motor areas in the cortex, thalamus, and cerebellum. New results cast light on the possible functional significance of this interaction. The rhythmic inter

Role of astrocytes in rhythmic motor activity.

Rhythmic motor activities such as breathing, locomotion, tremor, or mastication are organized by groups of interconnected neurons. Most synapses in the central nervous system are in close apposition with processes belonging to astrocytes. Neurotransmitters released from neurons bind to receptors expressed by astrocytes, activating a signaling pathway that leads to an increase in calcium concentration and the release of gliotransmitters that eventually modulate synaptic transmission. It is therefore likely that the activation of astrocytes impacts motor control. Here we review recent studies de

Interdigestive motor activity in health and disease.

Interdigestive contractile activity in the gastrointestinal tract was measured in dogs and humans. During the interdigestive state, it was found that in healthy dogs and humans, cyclically-recurring strong contractions occurred in the stomach at approximately 100 min intervals and migrated through the small bowel in a caudal direction. The interdigestive contractions consist of three phases, phase I being quiescent while phases II and III are contractile. Phase II contractions resemble those in the digestive state and therefore mix the contents, and phase III contractions are strong in contrac

Motor activity of the abomasum in sheep.

The experiments were carried out on 5 sheep with chronic fistulae of the rumen and of the fundus and pyloric part of the abomasum. The motor activity of the parts of the stomach containing fistulae was recorded by the balloon method. The analysis of the obtained contraction curves showed that the motor activity of the pyloric part was more intense than that of the fundus of the abomasum, and the intensity increased with filling of the multichamber stomach with food, food intake increased the tonus and the intensity of peristaltic movements in the fundus and pyloric part of the abomasum, rumina

Magnesium deficiency: brain acetylcholine and motor activity.

Deprivation of magnesium ion in the diet caused a significant decrease in whole brain acetylcholine content. At the reginal level, the most pronounced effect was seen in the corpus striatum, diencephalon and cerebellum. The rate of depletion and recovery varied from region to region, and what appeared to be a return to normal acetylcholine in whole brain was the total of regions either higher or lower than control. The data presented here suggest that a positive relationship exists between the lowered cholinergic activity in the corpus striatum and increased nocturnal spontaneous motor activit

Human motor cortical gamma activity relates to GABAergic intracortical inhibition and motor learning.

Gamma activity (γ, >30 Hz) is universally demonstrated across brain regions and species. However, the physiological basis and functional role of γ sub-bands (slow-γ, mid-γ, fast-γ) have been predominantly studied in rodent hippocampus; γ activity in the human neocortex is much less well understood. We use electrophysiology, non-invasive brain stimulation, and several motor tasks to examine the properties of sensorimotor γ activity sub-bands and their relationship with both local GABAergic activity and motor learning. Data from three experimental studies are presented. Experiment 1 (N = 33) com
