Motor cortex is required for learning but not for executing a motor skill.

Motor cortex is widely believed to underlie the acquisition and execution of motor skills, but its contributions to these processes are not fully understood. One reason is that studies on motor skills often conflate motor cortex's established role in dexterous control with roles in learning and producing task-specific motor sequences. To dissociate these aspects, we developed a motor task for rats that trains spatiotemporally precise movement patterns without requirements for dexterity. Remarkably, motor cortex lesions had no discernible effect on the acquired skills, which were expressed in t

Enhanced motor noise in an autism subtype with poor motor skills.

BACKGROUND: Motor difficulties are common in many, but not all, autistic individuals. These difficulties can co-occur with other problems, such as delays in language, intellectual, and adaptive functioning. Biological mechanisms underpinning such difficulties are less well understood. Poor motor skills tend to be more common in individuals carrying highly penetrant rare genetic mutations. Such mechanisms may have downstream consequences of altering neurophysiological excitation-inhibition balance and lead to enhanced behavioral motor noise. METHODS: This study combined publicly available and

Field dependence-independence in complex motor skills.

This study analyzed the relationship between field dependence-independence and complex motor skills. According to the requirements of each sporting activity, subjects' motor system can be mainly controlled through exteroceptive or proprioceptive information. Sport performances require the athlete to disembed himself, other players, or the ball from the background, and decision-making appears to require cognitive restructuring. 26 athletes (13 men and 13 women) involved in acrobatic sports (gymnastics, trampoline, half-pipe snowboard, synchronized 3-m springboard, acrobatic rock, skateboard, an

The effect of motor solution exploration on the transferability of an acquired motor skill.

Movement variability can either facilitate or impede motor learning, dependent on the context of the learning environment. Most previous studies have evaluated reward- or reinforcement-based learning paradigms with a clear task goal and/or extrinsic feedback. We assessed the effect of movement variability when learning the kettlebell swing in a learner-regulated context, where participants relied solely on intrinsic feedback. We aimed to determine if high variability when first practicing the kettlebell swing enabled exploration of motor solutions that could be utilized to perform the movement

The Cortical Motor Areas and the Emergence of Motor Skills: A Neuroanatomical Perspective.

What changes in neural architecture account for the emergence and expansion of dexterity in primates? Dexterity, or skill in performing motor tasks, depends on the ability to generate highly fractionated patterns of muscle activity. It also involves the spatiotemporal coordination of activity in proximal and distal muscles across multiple joints. Many motor skills require the generation of complex movement sequences that are only acquired and refined through extensive practice. Improvements in dexterity have enabled primates to manufacture and use tools and humans to engage in skilled motor be

Are Motor Skills and Motor Inhibitions Impaired in Tourette Syndrome? A Review.

Tourette syndrome (TS) is a neurodevelopmental motor disorder described as an inability to inhibit unwanted motor movements. This article reviews research on the execution and inhibition of voluntary motor movements in TS. Over last two decades, a number of studies have addressed the structural and functional deficits associated with this syndrome. Only a limited number of studies have assessed the motor skills in these patients but have failed to reach any conclusive outcome. In the domain of response inhibition also, studies have reported arguable impairments in these patients. It is suggest

Primary motor cortex disinhibition during motor skill learning.

Motor learning requires practice over a period of time and depends on brain plasticity, yet even for relatively simple movements, there are multiple practice strategies that can be used for skill acquisition. We investigated the role of intracortical inhibition in the primary motor cortex (M1) during motor skill learning. Event-related transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) was used to assess corticomotor excitability and inhibition thought to involve synaptic and extrasynaptic γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA). Short intracortical inhibition (SICI) was assessed using 1- and 2.5-ms interstimulus int

Characterization of Fine Motor and Visual Motor Skills in Aicardi-Goutières Syndrome.

Aicardi-Goutières syndrome is a genetic inflammatory disorder resulting in dispersed neurologic dysfunction. Despite a recognition of overall motor impairment, fine and visual motor skills are undercharacterized. We hypothesize that there is a spectrum of fine and visual motor skills in the Aicardi-Goutières syndrome population as captured by a standard outcome measure, the Peabody Developmental Motor Scales (PDMS-2), which will be proportional to overall disease severity. In a cohort of 74 subjects, the Peabody Developmental Motor Scales-2 grasping and visual-motor integration subtests were ad

Individual differences in basic numerical skills: The role of executive functions and motor skills.

The aim of the current study was to explore individual differences in basic numerical skills in a normative sample of 151 kindergarteners (mean age = 6.45 years). Whereas previous research claims a substantial link between executive functions and basic numerical skills, motor abilities have been put forward to explain variance in numerical skills. Regarding the current study, these two assumptions have been combined, revealing interesting results. Namely, executive functions (inhibition, switching, and visuospatial working memory) were found to relate to symbolic numerical skills, and motor sk

Infant Gut Microbiota Associated with Fine Motor Skills.

BACKGROUND: During early life, dynamic gut colonization and brain development co-occur with potential cross-talk mechanisms affecting behaviour. METHODS: We used 16S rRNA gene sequencing to examine the associations between gut microbiota and neurodevelopmental outcomes assessed by the Bayley Scales of Infant Development III in 71 full-term healthy infants at 18 months of age. We hypothesized that children would differ in gut microbial diversity, enterotypes obtained by Dirichlet multinomial mixture analysis and specific taxa based on their behavioural characteristics. RESULTS: In children di

Dark adaptation, motor skills, docosahexaenoic acid, and dyslexia.

Dyslexia is a widespread condition characterized by difficulty with learning and movement skills. It is frequently comorbid with dyspraxia (developmental coordination disorder), the chief characteristic of which is impaired movement skills, indicating that there may be some common biological basis to the conditions. Visual and central processing deficits have been found. The long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFAs) are important components of retinal and brain membranes. In the preliminary studies reported here, dark adaptation was shown to be impaired in 10 dyslexic young adults when

Fundamental Motor Skills and Physical Activity: Short-Term but Not Sustained Associations Between Improved Locomotor Skills and Preschoolers' Physical Activity Following a Motor Skill Intervention.

BACKGROUND: Fundamental motor skills (FMS) support children's participation in health-enhancing physical activity (PA), yet it remains unclear whether postintervention motor skill gains translate into increased PA. PURPOSE: This study used cross-sectional and prospective analyses to examine associations between changes in preschoolers' FMS and PA immediately following the Children's Health Activity Motor Program and again 6 months later. METHODS: Preschoolers (N = 153; 86 girls, mean age = 53.14 mo [4.43 y]) from 3 preschool centers participated. Process-oriented FMS were assessed using the

The relation between specific motor skills and daily living skills in autistic children and adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: Motor skill difficulties are common in autistic children and are related to daily living skills (DLS). However, it remains unclear which specific motor tasks are most likely to impact overall DLS. This study sought to fill this gap. METHODS AND RESULTS: In 90 autistic children and adolescents (ages 6-17 years), we found that fine/manual motor tasks, like drawing or folding, demonstrated significant medium-sized relations with DLS, even after accounting for IQ and sensory features, whereas tasks in the areas of bilateral coordination, upper-limb coordination, and balance only rel

Developmental trajectories of motor skills during the preschool period.

Children with developmental coordination disorder also manifest difficulties in non-motor domains (attentional, emotional, behavioral and socialization skills). Longitudinal studies can help disentangle the complex relationships between the development of motor skills and other cognitive domains. This study aims to examine the contribution of early cognitive factors to changes in motor skills during the preschool period. Children (N = 1144) from the EDEN mother-child cohort were assessed for motor skills with the Copy Design task (NEPSY battery) and the parent-rated Ages and Stages Questionnai
