[The neurologist and patients driving motor vehicles].

Driving motor vehicles is a complex visuomotor task that challenges normal nervous system functioning. Indemnity of sensory organs and intact alertness are essential. In addition, safe driving is extremely sensitive to disturbances of attention as well as to some forms of cortical dysfunction. Epilepsy, cognitive impairment, Parkinson's disease, stroke and sleep disorders, among other conditions, may interfere with driving through different mechanisms. The individual rights to maintain important privileges such as having a driver's license may enter in conflict with a society demanding safer r

Fatal falls and jumps from motor vehicles.

In 1978, 345 persons were killed in the United States in jumps and falls from non-crashing motor vehicles: 64 per cent fell; 15 per cent jumped; and it was not known whether the other 21 per cent jumped or fell. Two hundred and one people had been traveling on the exterior of vehicles, especially truck beds, and almost all of these people fell from their vehicles. The other 144 fatalities involved people in passenger compartments. Many of the falls from compartments occurred when occupants opened doors, or when vehicles changed direction. Seventy-seven per cent of those who fell from passenger

An overview of suicides related to motor vehicles.

Although vehicles may be used in a wide variety of suicides, this has not been a focus in the forensic literature. Thus, an analysis of coronial autopsy reports at Forensic Science SA, Adelaide, South Australia over a 16-year period from January 2005 to December 2020 was undertaken to provide an overview of cases in which it was considered that a vehicle had been integral to the successful completion of a suicide. De-identified details were collected from all cases in which a vehicle had facilitated or been used as a method of suicide. A number of different types of vehicle-related suicide met

Burns in motor vehicle accidents.

Burns received as a result of motor vehicle accidents (MVA's) create special problems in their care, as they are frequently severe and are often associated with other injuries. One hundred seventy-eight consecutive patients with burns sustained in an MVA were studied. The mean TBSA burn was 33.9%. The mortality was 24.7%, but the mean burn size in this fatal group was almost doubled at 63.9%. The injury most commonly associated with death was inhalation injury (in 36.3%). Thirty-six per cent of the patients sustained other injuries in addition to their burn, the most frequent of which was to t

Suffocation in motor vehicle crashes.

Because death from suffocation in traffic fatalities has not been well described, we delineated the clinical, circumstantial, and autopsy findings associated with suffocation in a series of motor vehicle crashes. Medical examiner case files from a 5-year period were reviewed. Scene investigation, autopsy, toxicology, and first-responder reports were examined. Crash descriptions were reviewed, including vehicle type, mechanism of crash, response time, restraint use, occupant ejection, and victim position in cabins of vehicles. Mechanisms of suffocation, including torso compression, inversion, n

Subjective experiences of bicyclists being passed by motor vehicles: The relationship to motor vehicle passing distance.

BACKGROUND: Feeling unsafe when riding a bicycle is a key barrier to cycling participation. To better understand the experiences of cycling on-road, this study aimed to explore the relationship between cyclists' subjective experiences and the lateral passing distance of motor vehicles. METHODS: An on-road observational study was conducted in Victoria, Australia. Participants had a custom device installed on their bicycle that measured the lateral passing distance of motor vehicles and included a handlebar mounted "panic button" that participants could press when they felt that a passing event

Hydrogen cyanide exhaust emissions from in-use motor vehicles.

Motor vehicle exhaust emissions are known to contain hydrogen cyanide (HCN), but emission rate data are scarce and, in the case of idling vehicles, date back over 20 years. For the first time, vehicular HCN exhaust emissions from a modern, in-use fleet at idle have been measured. The 14 tested light duty motor vehicles were operating at idle as these conditions are associated with the highest risk exposure scenarios (i.e., enclosed spaces). Vehicular HCN was detected in 89% of the sampled exhaust streams and did not correlate with instantaneous air-fuel-ratio or with any single, coemitted poll

Heat stress in motor vehicles: a problem in infancy.

Children have died from heat stress because they have been left in closed automobiles. Changes in the internal temperature of various sized automobiles left in the Brisbane summer sun were examined. With all windows and doors closed, this temperature rose from an ambient level of 36 C to a maximum of 67 C within 15 minutes and remained there until the doors were opened. Slightly lower temperatures were found for light colored sedans and station wagons. However, all readings were significantly above ambient and all produced an environment unacceptable for a child. Temperatures approaching ambie

Selective detection and characterization of nanoparticles from motor vehicles.

Numerous studies have shown that exposure to motor vehicle emissions increases the probability of heart attacks, asthma attacks, and hospital visits among at-risk individuals. However, while many studies have focused on measurements of ambient nanoparticles near highways, they have not focused on specific road-level domains, such as intersections near population centers. At these locations, very intense spikes in particle number concentration have been observed. These spikes have been linked to motor vehicle activity and have the potential to increase exposure dramatically. Characterizing both

Wheelchair rider risk in motor vehicles: a technical note.

A better understanding of the risk involved in riding different sizes and types of motor vehicles is required to make informed decisions regarding a reasonable level of protection for wheelchair riders. Wheelchair rider accident information that can be used to estimate risk is quite limited. This paper reviewed the resources available, including the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System database. Motor vehicle accident data for the general public were analyzed in order to better characterize wheelchair rider risk. Using the National Safety Council annual transportation mode fatality r

On-lap travel: still a problem in motor vehicles.

National observational studies indicate that infants who are not restrained in child safety seats (CSSs) in motor vehicles are usually riding on the lap of another occupant. This study was undertaken to determine the conditions under which children travel on-lap. The extent to which injuries would be reduced if these children were restrained in CSSs was also examined. Data were taken from a multihospital monitoring system for pediatric occupant injuries and from the coroner's office in a single urban county (1980 through 1989). One hundred ten children younger than 1 year of age evaluated in t

Pediatric occupant-vehicle contact maps in rollover motor vehicle crashes.

OBJECTIVE: Rollover crashes account for more than 33% of all motor vehicle-related fatalities and have the highest fatality risk of all crash types, at 1.37% in the United States. There is increased awareness of the high fatality rate associated with this crash type, but there is very limited pediatric-specific data related to rollover crashes in the United States. Recent focus on rollover mitigation has resulted in implementation of countermeasures, making it important to evaluate injury causation for child occupants in rollover crashes with a more current data set. METHODS: We queried the C

Malignant Mesothelioma in a Motor Vehicle Mechanic.

Case reports remain an important source of data in the debate over the carcinogenic effect of asbestos-containing automotive friction products. This report documents a case of pleural mesothelioma accompanied by asbestos bodies in the lung tissue of a career auto mechanic with no other known sources of exposure. Previously unreported historical and contemporary exposure data are also discussed in the context of providing additional support for the proposition that work with asbestos-containing automotive products presents a risk of significant exposure. While there remains a body of negative e

Frequency of radiculopathies in motor vehicle accidents.

This retrospective study compared the frequency of electrodiagnostically confirmed cervical and lumbar radiculopathies in a motor vehicle accident (MVA) population to that of a non-MVA population in 24,651 consecutive initial electrodiagnostic reports. The frequency of cervical radiculopathy was slightly but significantly increased in 8% of the MVA compared to 6% of the non-MVA patients. The frequency of plexopathy was significantly increased in the MVA (3%) compared to the non-MVA patients (2%). The frequency of lumbar radiculopathy was not significantly increased (12% for both groups). Ninet

Psychiatric disorders and motor vehicle accidents.

The literature has often suggested a relationship between psychiatric illness and increased risk for motor vehicle accidents but few data exist, particularly those from prospective or case-controlled studies. The present study examined detailed accident and injury data from a large series (N = 1778) of motor vehicle crashes that included persons with diagnoses of psychiatric illnesses (n = 17); matched controls were also studied. As expected, drivers with psychiatric diagnoses used psychotropic medications more frequently than did controls. Drivers with psychiatric diagnoses did not have more
