Single Omnidirectional Camera System for Motorized Mobility Scooters to Measure Driving Operations, User Behavior, and Vehicle Location.

Ensuring the safety of motorized mobility scooters (MMSs) is challenging, particularly for elderly people with reduced physical function due to aging or health conditions. Previous studies have addressed this issue by assessing the driving skills of MMS users using measurement systems. However, these systems often required complex setups to capture the detailed data needed for driving assessment, making them less practical for clinical applications. To address this limitation, this study developed an MMS driving measurement system using a single omnidirectional camera, specifically designed fo

Evidence from a cohort of able bodied adults to support the need for driver training for motorized scooters before community participation.

OBJECTIVE: This study sought to utilize the implementation of a new competency test in order to define skills required to safely drive a motorized scooter. This test endeavours to reduce the number of driving and pedestrian related accidents, by determining an acceptable level of driver skill and awareness. METHODS: Healthy subjects, who might at some time use a motorized scooter for mobility, were recruited from the local community. Each undertook a driver competency test including basic driving skills, traffic and multiple tasks. Ten subjects repeated the test three times to determine pract

Lower extremity ulceration caused by medical scooter injury: a case series.

The motorized mobility scooter (MMS) provides considerable benefits to patients with mobility limitations. Nevertheless, safety concerns related to MMS use are an issue. With increased use because of increased life expectancy and chronic illness, there are a growing number of reports of MMS-related injuries, ranging from lacerations and contusions to fatalities. Comorbidities may also exacerbate wound care. Prevention of these injuries is greatly needed. The author presents 5 patients with lower-extremity ulceration caused by MMS injuries. To prevent these injuries, health care providers must

Deaths of older Australians related to their use of motorised mobility scooters.

This study describes motorized mobility scooter (MMS) rider-related fatalities in the older Australian population during the years 2000-2011, identified from the National Coronial Information System. Seventy-seven fatalities were identified, most aged 80 years or older (74.1%) and males predominated (76.6%). Most deaths (88.3%) resulted from collisions with motor vehicles or falling from the MMS. These findings are consistent with the reported morbidity data. Challenges to MMS case identification included lack of specification in reports to Coroners and inadequate codes. Improved specificity a

Analysis of the consequences of car to micromobility user side impact crashes.

INTRODUCTION: The strong rise in modes of travel commonly referred to as micromobility has changed the mobility patterns and lifestyles in cities worldwide, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic. It has led to a significant increase in the number of crashes involving these types of vehicles, especially bicycles and stand-up e-scooters. The risk of crashes is higher at intersections where motor-vehicles perform a turning maneuver crossing a bike lane. METHOD: The consequences of a passenger car-to-micromobility vehicle side-impact crashes, considering both bicycle and e-scooter, were studied

Understanding e-scooter rider crash severity using a built environment typology: A two-stage clustering and random parameter model analysis.

E-scooters are an emerging transport mode that is transforming urban mobility; however, their proliferation has raised concerns about safety. This study combines UK e-scooter crash data with built environment characteristics from the crash locations. A two-stage framework was followed: first, a typology of built environments was developed using K-means++; second, crash severity within each cluster was analysed using a random parameter binary logit model. Four built environment clusters were identified: (1) car-centric and mixed-use zones, (2) commercial and industrial zones, (3) intersection-d

Spatial measurement of mobility barriers: improving the environment of community-dwelling older adults in Taiwan.

Mobility barriers can impede physical activity, increase the fear of falling, and pose a threat to the ability of older adults to live independently. This study investigated outdoor mobility barriers within a nonretirement public housing community located in Tainan, Taiwan. Site observations and interviews with older adult residents determined that parked motor scooters, potted plants, the rubber tiles of play areas, and a set of steps were the most important barriers. In addition, the space syntax parameters of control value and mean depth were effectively able to quantitatively measure impro

Pediatric injury due to wheeled recreational devices: a single-institution retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Injuries are the number one cause of death in children and cause significant morbidity. Common scenarios for injury include wheeled recreational devices (WRDs) that allow children to be mobile and independent (example ATV-all terrain vehicles, dirt bikes, bicycles, skateboards, and scooters). We present a case series review of these external causes of injury. This study aims to evaluate epidemiologic trends in WRD injuries and patterns in usage of protective gear. RESULTS: A total of 263 patients were identified as meeting criteria for inclusion with the following causes of injuri

Diversity of "Pedestrians on Wheels", New Challenges for Cities in 21st Century.

Traditionally, pedestrians were identified as singular entities with standard needs. Reality shows us that pedestrian diversity is a reality that is becoming increasingly complex. How does urban design face the changing reality of pedestrian typologies? In the same way that in the 20th century the car set aside horse carriages and pedestrians, in the 21st century pedestrians are returning to take centre stage with regard to motor vehicles, but with new formalizations that imply new considerations in the design of streets, many of they are still unsolved. Citizens strolling on scooters, skates,

A novel method for handling pre-existing conditions in multivariate prediction model development for COVID-19 death in the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Many mathematical models have been proposed to predict death following the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19); all started with comorbidity subsets for this still-little understood disease. Thus, we derived a novel predicted probability of death model (PDeathDx) upon all diagnostic codes documented in the Department of Veterans Affairs. We present the conceptual underpinnings and analytic approach in estimating the independent contribution of pre-existing conditions. This is the largest study to-date following patients with COVID-19 to predict mortality. Cases were identified with at least on
