[Neoplasms of the floor of the mouth. Case reports].

The authors study a group of 61 patients treated for floor of the mouth neoplasms at the Istituto di Oncologia di Torino. They confirm a high incidence of deaths in the first 2 years after treatment in patients T greater than 2 N+, and better survival in patients with stage I-II tumours. The survival does not tend to fall between 5 and 10 years after treatment.

[Surgical and radiotherapeutic possibilities of treatment of mouth neoplasms].

The basic concept of the treatment of cancer of the oral cavity has not essentially changed in the past few decades. The final results depend mainly on the site and extent of the primary tumor and on the presence of metastases to the regional lymph nodes. In most cases the treatment still includes surgery in combination with radiotherapy, both of which must be coordinated. Complete treatment of the primary tumor and of the lymph node areas is of great importance even in non-advanced cases. Extensive resection of the tumor offers another mode of curative therapy, especially in combination with

[General orientation of the treatment of mouth and pharyngeal neoplasms].

The treatment of carcinomas of oropharynx and oral cavity has changed rapidly over the last 15 years due to the progress of surgical technics and of oncological knowledge. As far as natural history and therapy are concerned, there are two opposing types of cancer: 1. Carcinomas developing from a mucous membrane covering a lymphoid tissue (cancers of the tonsil, some cancers of the palate and the base of tongue). Treatment is usually by radiotherapy, and surgery is mainly resorted to if radiotherapy fails. Therapeutic trials of chemotherapy are in progress. 2. Carcinomas developing from a mucou

[Intra-oral sonography in neoplasms of the mouth and base of the tongue].

Sonography has proved superior to CT and MRI for imaging T1 or T2 carcinomas of the oral cavity and base of the tongue. However, in examining the anterior half of the tongue and the floor of the mouth problems arise due to absorption of sound by the mandible and air inclusion. Ultrasound examination can be performed end-orally by means of a miniaturised transducer. End-oral sonography produces images of the anterior parts of the tongue and the floor of the mouth without artefacts. This method is superior to conventional transcutaneous sonography for this region.

Sonography of the tongue and floor of mouth. Part II: Neoplasms of the tongue.

Frequently, correct evaluation of space-occupying lesions in the tongue is not possible with clinical methods only. In an attempt to assess the value of sonography in the detection of tongue lesions, we used submental sonography to examine 62 patients with suspicious palpatory findings upon physical examination of the tongue. Ultrasound detected 45 out of 47 tumours that were eventually confirmed either by surgery or by biopsy. Inadequate technique was the only factor that affected the detection rate. Sonography appears to be a reasonable guide in determining size and site of a tumour of the t

[Meaningful possibilities of palliative therapy of incurable mouth and pharyngeal neoplasms and their recurrence].

In incurable cancer of the mouth and oropharynx, reasonable palliative therapy should render the patient's remaining life-span worth living. The following problems impair tumor patient's well-being: 1. pain, 2. ingestive and respiratory difficulties, 3. aspect, 4. odor, 5. psychic trauma resulting from 3 and 4. Pain, either caused by the tumor itself or as a reaction to irradiation or inflammatory response, is of primary importance. Impairment of ingestion, respiration, and speech diminishes the quality of life. Disfigurement of the face or a penetrating odor may sometimes cause additional psy

Transmandibular approach to the malignant neoplasms of the mouth base, tongue root and oropharynx.

Tumors of the mouth basis, tongue root and oropharynx present a challenge for surgical treatment. High recurrence rates, poor survival, and significant postoperative alterations in speech and swallowing function are common experiences for patients with malignancies in these anatomic sites. This paper reviews the evaluation of displayed patients: pathologic features, surgical approaches and postoperative complications reported in recent managing patients with these neoplasms. A modification of usual surgical techniques has been used by the author to treat 30 tumors in this region and it is pres

[Malignant neoplasms of the lip, mouth, pharynx, nose, ear and larynx. A descriptive-epidemiologic study].

Between 1952 and 1986 the mortality from malignant tumours of the head and neck in the German Federal Republic shows a varying picture: a decline of cancer of the lip, equivocal rates for cancer of the nose and ear, increases for cancer of the tongue and of the larynx, a marked increase for cancer of the floor of the mouth and of the hypopharynx, a lesser increase for cancer of the tonsillar area and other parts of the mouth, but almost no increase for cancer of the salivary glands. The trends are similar for males and females, but the male:female ratio increased during the observation period.

Floor of mouth schwannoma mimicking a salivary gland neoplasm: a report of the case and review of the literature.

Schwannomas or neurilemmomas are slow-growing, benign and often firm lumps that are typically painless. They are extremely rare in the oral cavity, with the tongue and the palate being the most common intraoral sites. This is a case report of this pathology in the floor of the mouth. We present a case of a 28-year-old female patient with a 2-month history of a floor of mouth swelling. On clinical examination this was non-tender and appeared firm. An ultrasound of the lesion was performed which revealed a well-defined, rounded and low reflective soft tissue mass. Following an MRI scan and surgi

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis and neoplasms of the mouth and pharynx: a two-sample Mendelian randomization study.

BACKGROUND: The association between recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) and neoplasms of the mouth and pharynx (NOMAP) has been reported in some previous observational studies. However, causality is still confused. Our research aims to explore the relationship between RAS and NOMAP through a Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis and to explore whether RAS can serve as a risk factor for NOMAP to provide a reference for the clinical strategy. METHODS: An exposure dataset for RAS were collected from a published study based on the UK Biobank (UKB). Outcome datasets included Genome-wide associatio

Multiple malignant salivary gland neoplasms: mucoepidermoid carcinoma of palate and adenoid cystic carcinoma of floor of mouth.

Salivary gland tumors usually occur as single lesions. To have more than one tumor is unusual. We report a case of an adult male who presented with a mucoepidermoid carcinoma involving the minor salivary glands of the palate at age 57 years, followed by an adenoid cystic carcinoma of the floor of mouth at age 63 years. The patient later succumbed to non-Hodgkin lymphoma at age 72 years. There are 31 acceptable cases of multiple malignant salivary gland neoplasms reported in the world literature. Multiple malignant tumors of the same histologic type are more common than those of different histo

The CT fish mouth ampulla sign: a highly specific finding in main duct and mixed intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms.

OBJECTIVE: Main duct and mixed intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMN) are pre-malignant cystic pancreatic neoplasms associated with pancreatic duct dilatation. Distinguishing these from benign causes of pancreatic duct dilatation is important in order to allow appropriate surveillance or surgery. A patulous duodenal papilla with extrusion of mucus at endoscopic evaluation, the endoscopic fish mouth ampulla (E-FMA) sign, is reported in main duct and mixed IPMN. We aimed to establish whether a CT correlate (CT-FMA) of this sign exists and whether this was associated with the presence of

[Oral cavity and oropharyngeal carcinomas in the materials of the University of Medical Science, ENT Department, in Poznan, in years 1980-1999].

624 patients with malignant neoplasms of the mouth and the oropharynx treated in the ENT Department K. Marcinkowski University of Medical Sciences in Poznań between 1980 and 1999 were analysed. Since the middle of the 90-ies a rapid increase of neoplasms incidence of this location has been observed. The most numerous group were tumours of the palatine tonsil (34.8%), tongue (32.5%), floor of the mouth (5.9%), soft palate (5.3%). Advanced neoplasms which encompassed the tongue, oropharynx, mouth floor base was observed in 134 patients (21.5%). The precise definition of their site of origin prim

[The "ancient schwannoma". A rare tumor of the mouth floor].

"Ancient schwannomas" of the mouth floor are rare, benign neoplasms derived from the nerve sheath of peripheral nerves. They show many degenerative changes such as necrosis and vascular thrombosis. Ancient schwannomas show histopathological features, such as degenerative changes and atypical nuclei, and may easily be confused with malignant neoplasms. B-scan sonography for the mouth floor and MRT imaging may be helpful in differential diagnosis. Here, we report on a patient with ancient schwannoma of the floor of the mouth.

Spontaneous oronasal ejection of neoplastic and non-neoplastic nodules by 21 dogs, 2000-2024.

Spontaneous ejection of tissues from body orifices is rare in veterinary medicine. Here we underscore the diagnostic value of tissues spontaneously ejected from the nose or mouth of 21 dogs and submitted for histologic evaluation at 3 veterinary diagnostic institutions. Cases were retrospectively searched (2000-2024) from the Athens Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, Tifton Veterinary Diagnostic and Investigational Laboratory, and Antech Diagnostics web-based archive systems. Affected dogs were adults (x̄ age = 9.5 y) of several breeds. There were 13 male (8 castrated, 5 intact) and 8 spayed fe

Intraoral lipoma: report of 3 cases.

Lipoma, a benign tumor of adipose tissue is one of the most common benign neoplasms of the body. However, its occurrence in oral cavity is very rare. It accounts for 1 to 4% of benign neoplasms of mouth affecting predominantly the buccal mucosa, floor of mouth and tongue. We report three cases of intraoral lipoma, two in buccal mucosa and one in labial mucosa. An excisional biopsy was performed and histopathological examination revealed proliferation of mature adipocytes arranged in lobules and separated by fibrous septa. After 3 years follow up, the patients showed no signs of recurrence.
