Comparison of Clonazepam and Tongue Protector in the Treatment of Burning Mouth Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: BMS is a chronic pain syndrome affecting the oral mucosa. It consists of experiencing a burning or dysesthetic sensation. BMS prevalence varies, with up to 15% among women. An effective treatment is still unattainable. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 60 patients with BMS qualified for a randomised trial, divided in two groups: the clonazepam-treated and tongue protector group. Treatment was provided for 4 weeks in both groups. In the former, the oral dosage of clonazepam 0.5 mg; in the latter, a tongue protector was used. Clinical oral examination was performed, and the presence

Prosthetic treatment for chemical burns of the oral cavity.

Chemical burns of the mouth, pharynx, and digestive passages have been reviewed in regard to the nature of the injury and wound description. Fabrication of custom mouth protectors to minimize oral scar contracture and its sequelae has been described. Mouth protectors provide flexible but active resistance to the forces of scar contracture and avoid a constant unyielding force that could cause pressure necrosis. Protectors are easy to fabricate and adjust, and permit movement and function of the injured area.

What every dentist needs to know about electric scooters.

Somatic and craniofacial injuries from the use of electric scooters (e-scooters) have become a serious public health concern, affecting both riders and pedestrians. Accidents involving e-scooters pose a risk for bone fracutres and significant injuries to the soft tissues and brain, and severe injuries may result in death. Oral healthcare providers should particularly be aware of the potential for injuries to the oral hard and soft tissues. Dentists have the opportunity to educate their patients on preventive measures to mitigate e-scooter injuries and to advocate the use of protective equipmen

The effectiveness of a mouth guard to protect against strong occlusion caused by modified electroconvulsive therapy.

Modified electroconvulsive therapy (m-ECT) is a treatment for mental disease such as depressive disorder. Although a muscle relaxant is used during current application, strong occlusion occurs due to the proximity of the electrode to the temporal and masseter muscles. Although a feedback mechanism to avoid excessive occlusion occurs unconsciously, the mechanism does not work under general anesthesia. Strong occlusion may cause complications such as tooth injury, pain of the jaw, lip laceration, and bleeding of the gums. Although there was a report that the insertion of shock-absorbing material

Oral Health in Electroconvulsive Therapy: A Neglected Topic.

Psychiatric medications may have serious and untoward adverse effects such as blurred vision, restlessness, agranulocytosis, muscle rigidity, and tremors. When compared to medications, electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is becoming a more acceptable treatment due to its efficacy, tolerability, and minimal adverse effect profile. Oral trauma can be an ECT-related adverse effect. We reviewed the published literature on oral health and dental protection in patients undergoing ECT, and found that there are deficits in all guidelines on dental protection during ECT. Dental assessment and treatment bef

Effectiveness of Mouthguards for the Prevention of Orofacial Injuries and Concussions in Sports: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Sport activities can account for up to one-third of all orofacial injuries. Mouthguards (MGs) have been proposed as a way to reduce these injuries. OBJECTIVES: To present a systematic review and meta-analysis of the effectiveness of MGs for the prevention of sports-related orofacial injuries and concussions. METHODS: Using specific search terms, PubMed, Ovid Embase, and the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature were searched to find studies that (1) contained original quantitative data on MGs and orofacial injuries and/or concussions, (2) included groups involv

Oral self-injury: an update.

BACKGROUND: Self-inflicted oral injuries of organic origin are particularly common in certain diseases, syndromes, and systemic disorders. In this article, we discuss the characteristics of these oral lesions and their treatment. LITERATURE SEARCH: The authors have reviewed the most relevant literature relating to oral self-injury through a search in textbooks and published articles included in the Medline database for the years 1970-2010, and selected published cases from the last two decades. RESULTS: The majority of the literature on oral self-injury is in the form of case reports. Self-i

Real-Time Continuous Monitoring of Oral Soft Tissue Pressure with a Wireless Mouthguard Device for Assessing Tongue Thrusting Habits.

In orthodontics, understanding the pressure of oral soft tissues on teeth is important to elucidate the cause and establish treatment methods. We developed a small wireless mouthguard (MG)-type device that continuously and unrestrainedly measures pressure, which had previously been unachieved, and evaluated its feasibility in human subjects. First, the optimal device components were considered. Next, the devices were compared with wired-type systems. Subsequently, the devices were fabricated for human testing to measure tongue pressure during swallowing. The highest sensitivity (51-510 g/cm2)

Detecting and Salvaging Head Impacts with Decoupling Artifacts from Instrumented Mouthguards.

In response to growing evidence that repetitive head impact exposure and concussions can lead to long-term health consequences, many research studies are attempting to quantify the frequency and severity of head impacts incurred in various sports and occupations. The most popular apparatus for doing so is the instrumented mouthguard (iMG). While these devices hold greater promise of head kinematic accuracy than their helmet-mounted predecessors, data artifacts related to iMG decoupling still plague results. We recreated iMG decoupling artifacts in a laboratory test series using an iMG fit to a

Which sports have a higher risk of maxillofacial injuries?

OBJECTIVES: Sports etiology is one of the most common causes of maxillofacial injuries. This work aimed to provide an up-to-date review of sports-related maxillofacial injuries. METHODS: An updated review was conducted on Pubmed and Google Scholar. No publication year and language restrictions were applied. Two different search strategies were performed, the first addressed which sports, generally associated with maxillofacial injuries, and the second search was conducted to determine the frequency of maxillofacial injuries associated with each sport individually. RESULTS: The first search r

A technique for construction of dynamic oral commissure retractors.

Microstomia may result from congenital defects, trauma, or surgery. Regardless of the etiology, the scar contracture can result in deformities that produce esthetic and functional disturbances. The literature described the use of static and dynamic commissure retractors. This article describes a technique for constructing commissure retractors from resilient mouth protector material reinforced with stainless steel wire. The tension of the commissure retractors is controlled with elastic bands attached to an orthodontic neck strap. The use of the retractor and the need for careful follow-up are

Smart mouthguards and contact sport: the data ethics dilemma.

The use of smart mouthguards in contact sports like rugby aims to enhance player safety by providing real-time data on head impacts. These devices, equipped with sensors, measure collision force and frequency, potentially identifying concussions that might go unnoticed during gameplay. The idea is that such enhanced monitoring will enable teams, physicians and other stakeholders to better protect players from the effects of on-pitch injury through immediate detection of head trauma and the long-term provision of player data. While we welcome the move towards a better understanding of the poten

[Custom-made mouthguards and prevention of orofacial injuries in sports].

The importance of sports dentistry has become even greater due to the role that sports have in modern society. As the risk of sports-related injuries appears already in the period of children's play and is constantly present in various risk-related sporting activities, the role of dental profession has become extremely important. Custom-made mouthguards are the most highly recommended mouthguards used for successful prevention of orofacial and dental injuries. It is important to inform athletes of the best characteristics of a custom-made mouthguard such as retention, comfort, fit, ease of spe

Trauma to the oral cavity.

Sports events, particularly those in which mouth protectors are not commonly used, can be associated with injuries to the oral structures. While the incidence of sports-related orofacial injuries is not as high as for other traumatic events, the incidence could be reduced further by increased use of mouth and face protection. When injuries occur, quick action by primary health care providers can significantly improve the final outcome of the definitive treatment. Also important is appropriate follow-up evaluation and care since the effect of trauma on teeth is not always immediately apparent.
