Persistent Mullerian duct syndrome.

Persistent Müllerian Duct Syndrome is a rare genetic disorder, consisting in the persistence of the müllerian structures in males. We report the case of a 29-year-old male patient presented with an abdominopelvic mass. Radiological examination showed a 30cm abdominopelvic mass that was biopsied, and the pathological examination concluded to a testicular seminoma. The patient underwent surgery after neoadjuvant chemotherapy, where a uterus with right adnexa were discovered. This case highlights the therapeutic challenges of persistent Müllerian duct syndrome and the importance of the early diag

Persistent mullerian duct syndrome.

Persistent Mullerian duct syndrome (PMDS) is a rare form of internal male pseudohermaphroditism in which Mullerian duct derivatives are seen in a male patient. This syndrome is characterized by the persistence of Mullerian duct derivatives (i.e. uterus, cervix, fallopian tubes and upper two thirds of vagina) in a phenotypically and karyotypically male patient. In this article we present the USG and MRI features of a case of PMDS with bilateral cryptorchidism and left sided inguinal hernia, containing the uterus and fallopian tubes.

Persistent Mullerian Duct Syndrome.

Persistent Mullerian Duct Syndrome is extremely rare. Our patient, a 32 years old male, with history of orchidectomy presented with mass abdomen. He was initially diagnosed with seminoma and subsequently treated with chemotherapy. Biopsy of the mass showed germ cell tumour and MRI abdomen revealed female rudimentary organs confirmed on per operative and later on histopathology. Karyotype was 46 XY.

[Persistent Mullerian duct syndrome].

We report on a 14-year-old boy who was admitted to the emergency department for acute retention of urine. At age 1 year, he had been submitted to surgery for left cryptorchidism and left-sided herniation, associated with hypospadias of the glans penis. Radiologic and endoscopic work up revealed a large retrovesical cavity with septation in its upper portion communicating with the prostatic urethra. These structures were removed and pathologic examination disclosed remnants of Müllerian ducts. This uncommon disease entity whose etiopathogenesis is ascribed to a deficient activity of the Mülleri

Mullerian duct anomalies: MR imaging.

Mullerian duct anomalies (MDAs) are rare, affecting approximately 1% of all women and about 3% of women with poor reproductive outcomes. These congenital anomalies usually result from one of the following categories of abnormalities of the mullerian ducts: failure of formation (no development or underdevelopment) or failure of fusion of the mullerian ducts. The American Fertility Society (AFS) classification of uterine anomalies is widely accepted and includes seven distinct categories. MR imaging has consolidated its role as the imaging modality of choice in the evaluation of MDA. MRI is capa

Persistent mullerian duct syndrome in a dog.

This case report describes a 14-year-old, male castrated York Shire Terrier, which was presented due to stranguria and tenesmus. An abdominal computed tomography (CT) scan raised a high suspicion of a persistent mullerian duct. During laparotomy structures were found that were suspected to be a persistent ovary and uterus. The abnormal uterus was filled with fluid and had a blind end on both sides. The abnormal structures were surgically removed and pathologically examined. Pathology confirmed a persistent mullerian duct. The patient recovered well from the surgery and was able to urinate spon

A transvesical approach to mullerian duct remnants.

Surgical extirpation is the treatment of choice for symptomatic mullerian duct remnants (prostatic utricle, PU), and several surgical approaches have been described for the treatment of this pathology. A group of 11 patients with symptomatic PU were observed and treated. Associated anomalies included proximal or penoscrotal hypospadias in all patients and cryptorchidism in 9 (81.8%). In all cases the PU needed surgical correction, as the patients had recurring symptomatology. Surgery was carried out transvesically in 10 (91%) cases and in 1 a perineal approach was used. There were no surgical

[Mullerian duct cysts. A case report].

Muellerian duct cysts are rarely occurring, cystic lesions in the true pelvis, differing in size, derived from or continuous with the prostate and seminal vesicles. They mostly manifest themselves between the ages of 30-40 years. The most common symptoms are related to irritability and obstruction of the lower urinary tract as well as the rectum. Therapy is troublesome because of incomplete resection resulting in frequent recurrences and iatrogenic damages including incontinence and impotence. One case of Muellerian duct cyst with a history of several operations is reported.

Steroid enhancement of Mullerian duct regression.

The biologic activity of the glycoprotein, Mullerian Inhibiting Substance (MIS), was enhanced by added testosterone, medroxyprogesterone acetate, and progesterone, although these steroids did not cause Mullerian duct regression when added alone. Statistically significant augmentation by testosterone and medroxyprogesterone was observed at concentrations of 10(-7) and 10(-8) M. Progesterone enhanced MIS activity at a concentration of 10(-6) M. By contrast, dihydrotestosterone, estradiol, and corticosterone at concentrations of 10(-9) to 10(-5) M produced no significant effect on MIS activity. S

Excision of Mullerian duct remnant for persistent Mullerian duct syndrome provides favorable short- and mid-term outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: In dealing with persistent Mullerian duct syndrome (PMDS), excision of Mullerian duct remnant (MDR) has been rarely mentioned in the past, but recent discussions have taken place. This study aimed to evaluate the operative feasibility and outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three patients with PMDS operated on with excision of MDR between 2000 and 2009 were enrolled. Medical records were retrospectively collected and reviewed. RESULTS: Bilateral undescended testis was manifested in all cases. Two patients presented with incarcerated hernia, requiring emergency herniorrhaphy at the ag

Focal Mullerian duct retention in male mice with constitutively activated beta-catenin expression in the Mullerian duct mesenchyme.

Müllerian-inhibiting substance (MIS), which is produced by fetal Sertoli cells shortly after commitment of the bipotential gonads to testicular differentiation, causes Müllerian duct (MD) regression. In the fetal female gonads, MIS is not expressed and the MDs will differentiate into the internal female reproductive tract. We have investigated whether dysregulated β-catenin activity affects MD regression by expressing a constitutively activated nuclear form of β-catenin in the MD mesenchyme. We show that constitutively activated (CA) β-catenin causes focal retention of MD tissue in the epididy

Symptomatic Mullerian Duct Cyst in a Male Infant.

Symptomatic Mullerian duct cyst is a rare entity in children. A 9-month-old male infant presented with bowel and urinary obstructive symptoms. Imaging investigations revealed a cystic mass in the rectovesical pouch compressing bladder neck and rectum. At laparotomy, a Mullerian duct cyst was found. Most of the cyst was excised and the remaining cyst mucosa was cauterized. The child improved thereafter.

Mullerian duct anomalies: from diagnosis to intervention.

The purpose of this study was to review the embryology, classification, imaging features and treatment options of Müllerian duct anomalies. The three embryological phases will be described and the appearance of the seven classes of Müllerian duct anomalies will be illustrated using hysterosalpingography, ultrasound and MRI. This exhibit will also review the treatment options, including interventional therapy. The role of imaging is to help detect, classify and guide surgical management. At this time, MRI is the modality of choice because of its high accuracy in detecting and accurately charact

Cervical Dysgenesis: A Rare Mullerian Duct Anomaly.

Cervical agenesis or dysgenesis is a rare congenital anomaly. The patients usually present with primary amenorrhoea, primary infertility, and cyclical abdominal pain or with a history of prior surgeries like hymenectomy, vaginoplasty, or adhesiolysis for endometriosis along with well developed secondary sexual characters. We present a case of 15 years old girl with cervical dysgenesis and proximal vaginal agenesis, who presented with severe cyclical abdominal pain. She was managed with cervicovaginal canalization by coring and drilling technique done by vaginal approach with simultaneous lapar

Laparoscopic management of persistent mullerian duct syndrome.

Persistent mullerian duct syndrome (PMDS), characterized by the presence of mullerian structures in a virilized male, frequently presents as undescended testis, either intraabdominal or within a hernial sac. We describe a 10-month-old infant with PMDS successfully managed by the laparoscopic approach. At the age of 1.5 months, the patient presented with a left inguinal hernia and bilateral nonpalpable gonads in another center and underwent left inguinal exploration. The uterus and a gonadlike structure along with the hernia sac were found in the inguinal canal. Left inguinal herniotomy was per

Mullerian duct anomalies: imaging and clinical issues.

While estimates of the frequency of müllerian duct anomalies vary widely owing to different patient populations, nonstandardized classification systems, and differences in diagnostic data acquisition, these anomalies are clinically important, particularly in women who present with infertility. An understanding of the differences between these uterovaginal anomalies, as outlined in the most widely accepted classification system-that published by the American Fertility Society (AFS) in 1988-is imperative given the respective clinical manifestations, different treatment regimens, and prognosis fo

Persistent mullerian duct syndrome--a case report.

Persistent mullerian duct syndrome presents in phenotypically male subjects with unilateral cryptorchidism, inguinal herniation, and persistent mullerian remnants. Pre-operative diagnosis of this condition is difficult. Orchidopexy with excision of the persistent mullerian duct structures is usually not possible without making damage to the vas. The alternative of leaving the persistent mullerian duct structures alone and performing a staged or primary orchidopexy has been suggested. A similar case, encountered in the department of surgery, Bankura Sammilani Medical College and Hospital is bei

Association of renal agenesis and mullerian duct anomalies.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this work was to determine the association of renal agenesis with the different types of mullerian duct anomalies (MDAs). METHOD: A 5 year retrospective review of MR records identified 57 patients with MDAs. Associated renal anomalies were correlated with the various types of MDAs. RESULTS: Renal agenesis was found in 17 (29.8%) of 57 patients. No other renal anomalies were identified. Renal agenesis was more frequent in patients with uterus didelphys (13/16 cases). Renal agenesis was also seen in patients with uterine agenesis (2/5 cases) and unicornuate uterus (2/7
