Language mapping is commonly practiced in brain tumors and epilepsy surgeries. It is done by direct electrical stimulation of the brain during awake craniotomy or by placing subdural electrodes on the brain's surface, or both. Studies of the language mapping in bi- or multi-lingual patients have concluded that they have both "language-specific areas," in which symptoms are evoked upon stimulation in one specific language and not in the other languages, and "common areas" or "overlapping areas," in which positive findings are evoked in all languages evaluated. The distribution of the pattern of

Bilingualism, plurilingualism respectively multilingualism can be associated with pathological deviations. Besides hereditary components, it can be observed that exogenic influences such as cerebral injuries etc, may render more difficult multilingualism or even prevent multilingualism. It is the task of the phoniatry to recognize and to deal with this problem. For example, the following situations were explained in terms of recognition, symptoms, and treatment of the communicational disease via multilingualism from the point of phoniatrical-logopaedical view: delayed speech and language devel

Multilingualism has emerged as a complex sociocognitive and behavioral trait with potential implications for cognitive resilience, functional capacity, and healthy aging. Recent large-scale European studies suggest that multilingual exposure is associated with more favorable biobehavioral aging profiles when cognitive, functional, and cardiometabolic domains are jointly considered. However, the interpretation and generalization of these findings require careful contextualization. In many regions of the Global South, particularly in Africa and Latin America, multilingual experiences are frequen

Over the last two decades there has been an expansion of activity and substantial progress in research on dyslexia and research on bilingualism and multilingualism. But the study of dyslexia has generally focused on monolingual learners and the study of bilingualism has tended to focus on speakers who do not have special educational needs. This paper will review the strands of research to date that have a bearing on multilingualism and dyslexia and attempt to identify the major challenges that face researchers and teachers. A satisfactory response cannot be developed without a full understandi

The processing of auditory stimuli which are structured in time is thought to involve the arcuate fasciculus, the white matter tract which connects the temporal cortex and the inferior frontal gyrus. Research has indicated effects of both musical and language experience on the structural characteristics of the arcuate fasciculus. Here, we investigated in a sample of n = 84 young adults whether continuous conceptualizations of musical and multilingual experience related to structural characteristics of the arcuate fasciculus, measured using diffusion tensor imaging. Probabilistic tractography w

Exchanges, travel, intercountry adoption which has become an increasingly common practice, uprooting, etc. have disrupted the compositions of increasingly multilingual societies and families. The development of research in cognitive sciences and the birth of bilingualism as a field of study since the 1970s, together with recent advances in linguistics, psychology, neuroimaging and speech therapy have made it possible to better describe the neuropsychological function and development of the bilingual person, particularly in the development of the normo and hearing-impaired child, in both lan

A substantial number of people with mental disorders do not speak the language of their healthcare provider well enough to participate in a full diagnostic procedure or to conduct a cultural formulation interview. Five main strategies are used to overcome language discordance and provide multilingual mental healthcare: simplified direct communication, digital translation tools, multilingual materials, multilingual clinicians, and interpreters. Each has value, but each also has limitations. Informal interpreting by relatives, children, or untrained staff raises substantial ethical, clinical, an

India is a profoundly diverse nation-state where constitutional provisions for two official and 22 Scheduled languages overlay a vast substratum of numerous Non-Scheduled languages and over a thousand distinct mother tongues, creating a rich and layered linguistic hierarchy. The trajectory of linguistic growth of young Indians is invariably multilingual and multidialectal and involves at least one L1, followed most often by Hindi and English or other languages. We carried out a qualitative study with over over a thousand students entering university using a modified LEAP questionnaire for self

For decades, survey studies have shown that adequately assessing and treating multilingual children is a challenge for Speech & Language Therapists (SLTs), due to the scarcity of clinical tools and procedures that take into account the influence that atypical linguistic exposure and the L1 exert on L2 performance. However, the exact reasons why such tools and procedures are not available to SLTs were not fully clarified in previous studies. In a new online survey, 297 SLTs from 17 different countries were asked about their perspectives on SLT service provision for multilingual children with re

BACKGROUND: Chinese university students purposefully use English-only and mixed Chinese-English posts, comments, and replies to share experiences, acknowledge others, and maintain ties, and everyday commentary often reads the practice as showing off. Identity scholarship holds that a multilingual identity is claimed through visible social participation, and quantitative research on digital multilingualism has centred on consumption and learning. This study conceptualises the practice as multilingual social grooming and, drawing on self-conscious emotion and social capital theory, asks whether

Although the literature suggests that multilingual augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) interventions hold benefits for children from multilingual backgrounds, there is little guidance on how such interventions can be implemented. While various barriers to this process have been noted, language ideology has not received much attention in the AAC literature. This paper aims to highlight multilingualism as both a linguistic and a sociopolitical phenomenon. An awareness of the influence of language ideology on AAC practice may lead to more considered and reflective approaches when sup

BACKGROUND: Language is one of the most fundamental aspects of any society. It is how individuals communicate with one another, form relationships and foster a feeling of community. Language processing is one of the most common, yet complex, tasks we perform regularly. Being multilingual facilitates effective communication and such people are better problem solvers. The benefits of multilingualism extend beyond the capacity to communicate in another language and provide individuals with a broader perspective of the world. This study aims to assess the cognitive functions of bilinguals and mult

Findings from recent psycholinguistic studies of bilingual processing support the hypothesis that both languages of a bilingual are always active and that bilinguals continually engage in processes of language selection. This view aligns with the convergence hypothesis of bilingual language representation. Furthermore, it is hypothesized that when bilinguals perform a task in one language they need to inhibit their other, nontarget language(s) and that stronger inhibition is required when the task is performed in the weaker language than in the stronger one. The study of multilingual individua

UNLABELLED: Stuttering occurs across all languages and cultures. However, the impact of speaking more than one language on assessment and treatment of young children who stutter is not well documented. This paper discusses some of the challenges related to clinical issues pertaining to this population including (a) identifying stuttering in an unfamiliar language, (b) the influence of language proficiency, and (c) treatment of multilingual young children who stutter. The paper is written from the perspective of the author's experience treating multilingual children who stutter within the conte

It has been suggested that the cognitive requirements associated with bi- and multilingual processing provide a form of mental exercise that, through increases in cognitive reserve and brain fitness, may delay the symptoms of cognitive failure associated with Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. We collected data on a country-by-country basis that might shed light on this suggestion. Using the best available evidence we could find, the somewhat mixed results we obtained provide tentative support for the protective benefits of multilingualism against cognitive decline. But more impo

This study explores the effects of multilingualism and reading scanning habits on right hemisphere (RH) abilities. Native Hebrew speakers and Arabic-Hebrew bilinguals performed three tasks. Experiment 1 employed an odd/even decision paradigm on lateralized displays of bar graphs. Both groups of subjects displayed the expected LVFA within the range previously reported for readers of English. Experiment 2 consisted of a chair identification task designed to tap asymmetry of hemispheric arousal and a chimeric face task designed to tap RH specialization for facial emotion. Neither scanning habits

This article reports on a large-scale study investigating the overall perception of multilingualism in the family environment of children enrolled in an English immersion program in primary schools across Spain and the potential relationship between these attitudes and the student's academic performance. One thousand and one families participated in the study, based on a tailored questionnaire that evaluated three main aspects: (1) parents' and guardians' ratings of their children's language skills; (2) language practices in the home, especially with respect to time allocated to different lang

This article introduces the LITMUS-MAIN (Language Impairment Testing in Multilingual Settings-MAIN) and motivates the adaptation of this instrument into Chinese languages and language pairs involving a Chinese language, namely Cantonese, Mandarin, Kam, Urdu. We propose that these new adapted protocols not only contribute to the theoretical discussion on story grammar and widen the evidential base of MAIN to include more languages in studying bilinguals, they also offer new methods of assessing language development in young children that have the potential to tease apart the effects of language
